Title: BW Summer Classic $3,000 1st Place GUARANTEED
Post by: walt8398 on March 09, 2008, 11:23:29 AM
I am pleased to announce that we are having a major scratch event this summer! The event will be called the BW Summer Scratch Classic and will take place August 23rd & 24th at Brunswick Zone Perry Hall Lanes in Baltimore, MD and feature a GUARANTEED 1st place prize of $3,000!

Tournament format:

• Entry fee will be $140 ($120 prize fund, $20 lineage) CASH ONLY
• Cash ratio 1:5
• (2) 8 game qualifying squads (9am & 4:30pm). Re-oil after 9am squad. (Re-entries will be permitted on the 4:30pm squad if space is available) Pins carry over from qualifying
• Finalists will come back on Sunday (8/24) for 7 games of round robin match-play. 50 bonus pins for every match won. The 7th game will be a position round game. The bowler with the highest total pinfall with bonus pins will be the tournament champion.

Brackets, survival boards (aka eliminators), high game pots, high game of the day and a last game (8th game) pot. We will also give the top 2 bowlers on each squad a Columbia300 ball (courtesy of Columbia300) and pay high senior (50 and over) & high female out of the money prizes.

I will be working with the center on a pattern that will allow all styles to be in play. The pattern will be posted on our website (www.vmsbt.com) once it is determined.

We have to limit qualifying squads to 88 bowlers per squad due to Perry Hall’s large Rock & Bowl turnout after the 4:30pm squad is done. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO EMAIL OR CALL ME TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. DON’T GET SHUT OUT OF THIS EVENT!

Hey all

Getting some reservations already and keep 'em coming.  I would just like to add that when you email to reserve a spot, please let me know which squad you would like to reserve (9am or 4:30pm).

Also, after much consideration I am changing rule #1 regarding PBA members. Members who will be exempt for the upcoming '08-'09 PBA season are INELIGIBLE.

See everyone at the Rhodman this weekend.

Update

We are now above the 110 entry mark. Entries are starting to come in from the NJ/NY area. Local (all of my NCABA & GBBA) bowlers, don't get shut out. There are roughly about 60 or so spots left. I have to be firm on the 176 entry max due to the center needing their lanes for cosmic open play after the 4:30pm squad ends. BEING ON STANDBY WILL NOT BE FUN.

I will have the pattern posted on the website after this weekend.

We are now at the 120+ entry mark for the event. Still waiting on my local folks to "represent" the area. The 9am squad is just about full and the 4:30pm squad is 65% full. If you would like to reserve a spot, please visit: http://www.vmsbt.com/VMSBT_Form.html

Update

Just wanted clear up a question I have been getting for the last 2 weeks or so. As it states on the flyer, I will be paying 1:5 overall (total number of entries from both squads). Also, 1:7 overall (total number of entries from both squads) will advance to the match-play portion of the tournament on Sunday (8/24 @ 9am) for 7 games of round robin match-play.

For example, if everyone shows (180 entries) I will pay 36 total spots and advance 24 bowlers to the match-play round. 24 finalists + 12 low to cash spots makes up the 36 spots being paid at the 1:5 ratio as advertised.

Also, I'm going to test the pattern again this coming Friday (8/15) at Perry Hall Lanes. If anyone wants to come out and get a preview of it, let me know so I can clear it with management to do a few extra pairs.

I'm excited for the 23rd and I hope everyone that has signed up to bowl is as well. We have bowlers coming from NC/VA/MD/DC/PA/NJ/NY/CT.

Whoever is crowned the winner of this event will have certainly earned it against a very strong and accomplished field.

It's ProAnvilane. It's a REALLY HARD surface. I've been bowling for 30+ years and I've never seen a surface this hard before. It's the Brunswick surface without the markers down the lane at the 10th & 15th boards.

Here are the results you are looking for

The winner was Yannaphon Larpapharat from Thailand. Second was Mike Rose Jr from Rochester, NY. Third and fourth were Gary Shultis from Levittown NY and Tim Gillick from Milford, CT.

The sweeper winner was Chris Werner from Rochester, NY and runner-up was last year’s champion, Dan Maclelland from Saginaw, MI.

Tony,

Hope your tournament is going to produce numbers like this....

July 30, 2008

Ko Whittington bowled 23 strikes in a row last night with his new Track Up-Rising. He finished the night with an 878 series (300-299-279), creating a new house record at the Brunswick Perry Hall Lanes and a tie for the Greater Baltimore Bowling Association record.

Brian Bennett, the team sub, also bowled with the Up-Rising. Finishing the night with an 823 series.

    Mr. Hahn

Uh NO! .... The middle of the Broadway pattern doesn't even come close the ratio of Perry Hall's house shot! I would need to call OPEC to reach that ratio on the Broadway pattern. (LOL)

I anticipate the scores will be medium to high. With the ratio being as low as it is in the middle (4.5:1), THERE WILL BE NO EXXON SPILL to push off of.

Hahn, did you see Ko's name on the roster? He's averaging 250+ in summer league on their super wall. The Broadway is going to favor folks who's style is similar to yours more so then a Ko.

The Broadway can step right in front of my bus and I'll gladly run it over and back up on it to make sure it's dead!!! LMAO

Bowled on the pattern today and it's playing very similar to the way it played for the May VMSBT event. I did notice one slight difference this go around with the new buffer on BZ Perry Hall's lane machine. It still plays like a multiple angle pattern but the difference is that I had a better look left of 15 (3rd arrow) and the left side played a little tighter according to my southpaw tester. Cover choice is REALLY going to be important on this pattern IMHO.

We have created an area on the VMSBT website with the roster as well. After Saturday's qualifying is done, I 'll have the cut score (finals and low to cash numbers) posted in the same area. http://www.vmsbt.com/BW-Roster.html

Just looked at the cut and low to cash numbers.  It took 219 to cash and 224 to make the cut.  Sounds like a carry contest which is what I thought might happen using the Broadway pattern at Perry Hall.  Wonder what the leader averaged and who it was?

224 for the finals and 219 aren't "carry contest" numbers. IMHO, 235 avg is CARRY CONTEST.

Just like to be the first to say that this was one of the best ran tournaments ive bowled in.  Results and bracket information was up to date very quickly.  Not to mention the great prize fund.  I ended up 14th and got $525, for a $140 entry fee, thats pretty good.  I hope Tony posts the prize list on here so people can see just how good it was.

Now if we can somehow fix that left side problem for the finals next year.  Good thing they didn't have that look on saturday or I might have dropped a buck or two lol

Once again just like to say thanks for a well ran tournament guys!

Why not try and run 5 or 6 of these a year instead of a membership club thing every 3 or 4 weeks.

Sounds like every 2 months could draw the interest that everyone is looking for and allows for a much better prize fund.

12 VMSBT tournaments is way too much each year with the decline in bowlings interest and the economy.

Not even going to put my head in the sand on the left/right issue. Not going to deny that the ratio of lefties in the finals were skewed. But it was what it was. You guys know that I try to keep it fair. Next year's pattern will be just as fair but different. I'm glad you guys enjoyed your experience and as always, I accept feedback that will make things better. Since I have a year to plan, I'm going to try to get additional monies and see if we can get to $4k or $5k next year.

Thanks again to all of those who particpated in this year's event.

I wish there were more tournaments like this locally, but unfortunately no one wants to take the chance on putting the money up and getting a terrible turnout.  Tony pushed this tournament for 5-6 months and did a fantastic job.

Trust me I know theres nothing that can ever be done about the left/right issue, like you said it is what it is, it happens.

Bill - I know you did not bowl the tournament so I'll share with you on BR about the Broadway. I bowled on it at Perry Hall and at the Kegel Training Center. The pattern allows players to hit the pocket "IF" they are lined up no different then the PBA patterns that everyone loves in spite of the HIGH scoring pace they yield.

When you have a field of good bowlers bowling on something they can identify, you will see some striking going on. Ask the many bowlers who did not strike how easy they were. They were so easy that you had bowlers going more then minus 200 during qualifying. Those bowlers who actually bowl tournaments realize this tournament was far from a shootout.

Golf is Better - I love your viewpoint to run "bigger" events and scrap the monthly tournaments but that would absolutely kill what just happened. VMSBT is $80 to bowl each month and it gives "bowlers" something competitive to bowl. Not to mention, the $3K came from some sponsors so paying $3K every other month is not as easy as it sounds. People always say there is no money at local events, to give you all an idea, it's nothing in a year for an tournament organization to pay $100,000 to it's competitors.

Hopefully you have been supporting the local tournament scene and helping it grow by either bowling or spreading the word about tournaments.

Jeff,  in my case, it wasn't that I couldn't get strikes, it was a few too many splits and 4 or 5 very makeable spares that I missed.  As for the scores being high, I was expecting something around 215 to cash, so +155 was close to what I thought.  I just made too many mistakes.

    BR Readers and VMSBT Followers,

I took some time thinking about what to say before writing this reply.  First, thank you Tony for running this tournament.  It is unfortunate that the final standings ended the way they did with 7 out of the top 11 being lefties, but it is what it is and everyone had to throw the ball.

I will put my perspective on how I feel I should've played the lanes differently from Day 1 and hopefully the righties will see what I saw.

The Broadway pattern is 37' - that is only 2 feet longer than the Cheetah which to me means you have to get the ball to the gutter to score well.  I took that mindset with me on Day 1, used a ball that was a little stronger than what I would use on the Cheetah and shot 1976 for the day.

Day 2 - the shot was reacting a little stronger than on Day 1.  So I did what most righties would do, either play with a weaker piece or move left and play the shot a little deeper.  WRONG ANSWER! This is what I found myself doing and saw most of the righties doing, throwing something longer (PIN to PAP) or weaker (COVERSTOCK).  Everyone seemed to forget that this was only 37' and 2 feet longer than the Cheetah, you still needed to get the ball to the gutter!

The point I'm trying to make is that the lefties are accumstomed to playing the track and left of the track, they rarely have to play the patterns deep so in my mind they took full advantage of the free hook that was to the left for them which was there for the righties we just didn't see it because we're so accustomed to moving left and playing drier patterns deep.

At the end of game 3, I woke up and moved my breakpoint back out to 3/4, I shot 120 over for the next 4 and had I done that games 1-3 I might have been able to win a couple more matches.

The goal of this post is by far NOT to give lefties more credit than they deserve , but to hopefully give the righties that were bowling some information for thought the next time we are up against a condition/situation like this so we maybe can turn the standing around and have it the way it should be, 7 out of the top 11 being right-handers!!

Congratulations to all the bowlers who made it to match play.  I'm sure at one point there was some adversity that all of us had to overcome in order to get to the finals, so be proud of yourselves for getting through that and making it as far as you did in a field of 140 bowlers.

Hats off to Troy and Mike for bascially running away with the 1/2 spots.  Those gentlemen bowled extremely well.

To all the lefties - we'll meet again!

What a great assessment. IMHO, that is what makes that pattern good. If it had that added push in the middle, it now becomes a HOUSE SHOT. Kegel's trademark is having patterns where the oil line drops off therefore forcing you to play the pattern the correct way.

Thank you for your kind words. You know as well as I do, what it takes to put on an event. I already have a list of potential sponsors for next year to boost the prize fund more. Again, nice bowling this weekend.

    Tony,

Here is the other observation.  On Sunday, there were obviously less bowlers.  Therefore, all the people during qualifying squads that were playing deep created hold for the guys like me who were playing right.

Because there were less righties doing that, the hold area didn't get created til late game 4 early game 5, whereas on Saturday it was there by game 3.

The only thing I can say is that nothing was awarded to me for being the overall leader after qualifying.  I know you gave balls out to the squad leaders but in my opinion, I would've given the balls out to the top two non-cashers and given a monetary award to the squad leaders.

Maybe splitting up that HIGH GAME OF THE DAY prize between the squad leaders - because you're already paying out a HIGH Game Pot.

    Just my thoughts....

I agree with Steve completely on the pattern.  The hold was created on saturday, however to me they started off hooking more on sunday and I did the same thing by chasing left instead of taking my hand out and playing out, but I really don't think it would have mattered, the lefties were winning.  However, I probably could have finished a lil higher up.  It happens, oh well.  The same could be said for the 2nd squad too though, because the scores were much higher the 1st block, but that could be due to the players that were bowling or just simply they were a lil different.  Doesn't really matter now, its done and over with and all in all, it was a great tournament.

I would say that the overall leader or both squad leaders should recieve some kind of cash reward instead of balls.

Congratulations Tony on a successful tournament.  You did a great job promoting this tournament and therefore got the best possible results.  Of course having sponsorship is always a wonderful thing.  Most bowlers dont understand that lineage in this area does factor in your tournament format and your ability to keep a decent Entry fee.   I hope that we see more sponsorship for our local tournaments coming in the near future.   We have some very good tournament directors in this area that are trying to provide a competitive venue for Bowlers.

I wish I could have bowled but PG County Courts took my $400 in Traffic Court on Friday.   At least I only got 2 of the 5+ points that they wanted to give me.   Sign me up for next year though.  I will try to drive slower in 2009.  LMAO

I first want to thank Tony and the entire VMSBT staff for running a well run and professional tournament.  Thanks for going out and doing the leg work to secure added money (which in this economy is not the easiest thing to do) to make the entire prize fund very nice.  First place $3K, 5th $1000, 20th $375 and low to cash $200.  Everyone that bowled well enough to cash or make the finals was well rewarded.  Also want to thank Brunswick Zone Perry Hall for allowing Tony & the bowlers to basically taking over there center for the weekend and the management & staff showing respect to the bowlers which rarely happens.

Stephen H & Mike L.. Columbia donated 4 balls to the bowlers for this tournament.  IMOP the idea behind that is Columbia wants there product out there in the hands of good bowlers.  Example if I led a squad giving me the ball is not helping Columbia because I can't us it so I would either give it away to a youth bowler (which is what I've done in the pass) or give it to the pro shop to trade it in for a Storm product.  So basically giving it to the highest non-staffer is really his only option.  Steve if I remember correctly when your dad ran the Masters he use to give a ball out to the leader of the squad also.   I do agree that $200 for high game of the tournament is too much but like you said, what's done is done.  Great bowling all weekend both of you guys!!!

Hans.. Great seeing you again my friend.  Keep in touch.

As for the shot at the tournament.  I bowled on A squad and bowled well and the shot seemed close to how I played on the Broadway pattern before.  I didn't watch B squad bowl but I heard they played tighter.  Sunday I would agree there was a bit more hook but the shot still played the same.

Lastly I want to congratulate Troy Lint for winning.  Left handed or right handed he out bowled the field and deserved to win.  Nice bowling also Mike for a solid finish.  That was a great position round match between you guys.

Also want to congratulate Samantha Williams for her 6th place finish.  Way to bowl with the guys. LOL

For any tournament bowlers within driving distance you missed a well run tournament with a super prize fund with some nice side action!!!!  Tony I'm already looking forward to next years tournament....

I agree Chris, they were somewhat close, but as the stats showed the left had a better look then they did on saturday, scores prove that.  Im not complaining by any means and you will never hear me complain about that issue, (I believe you, Hart, and Hollen ran me over once at woodlawn LOL, but I took my beating) because I know thats an issue that will never be settled so why bother.  The only problem I have with that issue is some people, not mentioning names, will only come out and play with us when they know the left might have a better look and everyone here knows who im talking about.  But trust me alot more tournaments get won by righties than lefties thats for sure.  Troy and Mike both out bowled the field, I don't care what the shot was, those 2 were the best 2 bowlers and what a great final match it was.

A side note, I do wish all the regional players would look at this format with the entry fee, side action, and prize fund and see for themselves exactly what could be out here once a month or even every 2 or 3 months if some of them would come out and support local tournaments like this.  The 1st squad I was in all 182 brackets, 4 eliminators, and high game pots.  So there was actually a shot to profit over $7000 this weekend, how many regionals can you do that at?  Also 20th spot paid $375, almost triple your money.  Why and how can any of the local bowlers that traveled to NJ and SC say this was not a better investment?

MSB and I were just talking about your post and we did some numbers ourselves. Most folks don't have the "deep pockets" like you to get in ALL. But your accounting is correct. For that same $200 or $275 as a non-member (I'll use the $200 in my example) you could have paid entry fee, high game pot and 2 survival boards.

On your squad the pots paid $180/gm and survival boards paid $240/ea for winning. If you bowled good the right 3 games:

    Win 3 high game pots - $540
    Win 2 Survival Boards - $480

That's $1,020 dollars.. You would have to make it to the round of 4 to make that money in a regional against 6-8 exempt bowlers in the top 16 on the patterns they bowl on for 20+ weeks.

    Wow!

So 4 bowling balls were given out by Columbia, nice, tell Mr. Morris to sign me up since I'm not on staff. LOL.

Mr. Baker - just wanted to clarify that I'm not one of those gasper you are speaking about - however, I would like to congratulate you on your very astute observation regarding the pattern and how well I would bowl on that condition.  HA HA HA - thanks for the extra confidence prior to qualifying.

The only thing I would like to say about the tournament is that you have to be careful how many times you try to run something like this.  The reason I say that is that it can lose it's luster/grandeur quickly if it is held too often.  I feel you have to give bowlers something to look forward too, something to prepare for and having this maybe 3 times a year would be more than enough.

I would consider Tony's and Jeff's tournaments spot check tournaments that all bowlers wanting to elevate their game should try to bowl in every month.  Most of the tournaments in some way will show you weaknesses in your game if you don't match up or line up properly to the pattern.

IMO, bowlers seem to forget what they are gaining or potentially could gain from competing in smaller venues.  Every event there is something to learn whether you cash or not.

I think i've ran out of air so I will say bye for now.  Thanks again Tony and I feel Jeff Baker deserves recognition too because these gentlemen support each other tournaments and to me, these are to two best clubs out there for bowlers in our area.

Congratulations again to all the finalists righty/lefty it doesn't matter to me, what's important is that we all have the ability and gift to compete, and we've all put in our share of time making ourselves the bowlers we are today and will be in the future.

Best of luck to all and I'll see you on the REAL HARDWOOD (OUR HARDWOOD)!

I saw at least 3 people who live in Baltimore or the York area who traveled to NJ to bowl the regional. What were you thinking??? I know, let me spend $275 to enter, $3.50 a gallon, tolls, 4 or more hours of driving round trip and possibly a hotel bill as well. Follow this breakdown of how you could have stretched your dollar and played for $3,000 up top, that’s $500 more then the regional by the way. Did I mention the entry fee was $135 less then the $275 you spent to bowl against some exempt guys and life long regional players?

    1.   Filled your car up from empty
    2.   Ate breakfast at Bob Evans
    3.   Paid the $140 entry to bowl the same 8 games you bowled in NJ
    4.   Entered the game pots, last game pot and 4 survival boards
    5.   Ate lunch or dinner at Original Steak House & Sports

If you bowled the 9am squad, you could have done all of this and been home long before the sun set too. And by my calculations, you would still have between $30-50 in your pocket. Welcome to the PBA!

Stephen, I feel a tear running down my cheek. Bro I know you aren't grasping, you are a competitor. You might not bowl everything but when you can you do come out and lace 'em up. If we had more folks willing to compete, the local tournaments could have 50+ easily.

VMSBT, 40 Boards & Triple Threat might need to start stealing from the bowlers, that seems to be the formula for drawing entries. And the best part, people don't even know they are being stole from because they don't do the math.

Yeah I know alot of people won't get in all and its not because I have deep pockets, its because thats how I make money in tournaments, but just take Hahn for example, im sure he probably didn't get in all, but he probably cleared $800-$1200 profit this weekend, you gotta finish top 2 to profit that much.  I just cannot understand what these guys are thinking.

    eRICOB

Don't take offense to the PBA post directly. That was directed mainly at the MD/Southern PA/DE bowlers who bypassed an event in their backyard to bowl the regional. Economically, it made no sense to bypass this past weekends tournament. I was a PBA member from '88-'99 & '02-'05. So, I know all about chasing the "dream". There was plenty of good competition and money to be made at this event is all we are trying to point out.

Next year's event will be the same weekend with the same top prize and/or more added money.

Walton, thank you for clarifying that for "eRICOB" because in his case it would be crazy to drive 2 hrs when he could have bowled at home and in his case gone home to see his daughter.

I do have a question eRICOB, why is it that I hear regional players say they bowl for the competition? And at the same time they cry the economy is bad so they need to win some money. Are the regionals the only place a bowler can find competition? I ask that because there are megabuck champs & runner-ups, regional champs, military champs, National Amateur Champs and former Team USA members bowling local tournaments.

You did the right thing, don't pass a tournament to get to another one. Maybe we'll see you at Opposites Attract mixed doubles next June and/or the BW in Aug.

    Tony,

I have to throw this out there to the BR folks.

I feel the 50 bonus pins is too much.  The reason I say this is for 2 reasons:

    1) It is luck of the draw for match play which I think gets magnified with the bonus pins.  It shouldn't be where luck of the draw dictates the tournament outcome.

    2) If a bowler quits or gets injured and is forced to leave the tournament, bowlers that are supposed to be bowling that person get free bonus pins when half of the rest of the field doesn't.

I would petition for 25 or 30 bonus pins max.  What is everyone else's opinion?

I'll be the first to respond to your question Stephen.  Originally I was not a fan of the 50 bonus points when it first used at his monthly tournaments years back.  There have been times where I qualified high and then didn't have a great match-play record and dropped near the bottom.   But there have also been times where I barely made the cut and then got dialed in and ended up winning or given myself a chance at winning thanks mainly to the bonus pins.  I will say that the 50 bonus pins gives everyone a chance to win going into the finals and puts the importance in winning matches.  From a spectator's point of view it makes for an exciting finals.

The one think I would consider changing for next year's B/W tournament is add more games on Sunday.  I realize bowling everyone in the finals isn't going to happen but I would like to at least bowl half of them.  I personally would have like to have bowled 10 games of match-play.  That would have still put the out of towners on the road at 1:30-2pm.

    Stephen

You definitely aren't the first one to mention the 50 bonus pins. As CJ pointed out, it makes the match-play interesting. It puts a premium on winning your matches and basically eliminates guys just giving away matches without any repracussions (which we all know used to happen during our days of bowling regionals in the old match-play format with 30 bounus pins). As a far as the guy withdrawing during match play, not really anything I could do at that point. But I will think on that to how to handle that in the future. My hope is that we won't have that happen too often.

We will add more games of match-play next year. I am keeping track of everyone's suggestions and will make the changes accordingly for next year's event. As you guys know, I'm open to ideas but the 50 bonus pins is going to stay (sorry bro )

Maybe to boost a little participation in the regular VMSBT events, the points race winner or winner & runner up if possible could get a free entry into "The Big One"?

Kudos on a great tournament.  Definately one of the smoothest ran and professional events I've ever seen ran for the volume of entries.  It was fun & I definately learned alot.

LOL yeah mikey felt bad for you chris, he saw all those - in the bonus section on your scorecard lol

I agree more matches will be good, but the 50 bonus is needed to give everyone a chance, thats why I say something should be paid to the leader that way if they do happen to lose a few matches and drop a few spots they at least get something for leading.  Even at the regular VMSBT events, the leader get $25 and 25 points.  10-12 games of match play would be good.

    TW,

I put the 50 point thing out there so I could hear from the rest of the bowlers how they felt and their point of view on the system.  No worries from me as I am good with whatever works best for the majority.  If everyone likes the system, you won't hear anything more about it from me.

I'll be sure to win more matches next time
