3rd Opposites Attract Scratch Mixed Doubles (June '09)

3rd ANNUAL OPPOSITES ATTRACT SCRATCH MIXED DOUBLES

For those of you that have not bowled Opposites Attract yet, why not? A little brief history, in 2006, Latise & I decided to offer a scratch mixed doubles tournament and that’s when 40 Boards & A Ball was born. Our vision was simple; a scratch tournament ran by scratch bowlers. So year one, folks said to make the shot challenging and they did not want to see a carry contest. What we ended up with was a “brutal” condition, yes brutal! Any of the 78 players can attest to this as we had 11 guys and 2 women break the 200 average barrier during 10 games of qualifying. Of the 8 teams that advanced to the cash round, 6 out of 16 keglers finished with a 200+ average. The teams that advanced to the cash round averaged 391 (-90) and there was a lot of spare shooting. Rob Alexander compared it to Team Challenge back in the day. Anyone who bowled Team Challenge, I am sure you can recall how ugly they could play.

After year 1, the teams that played asked for us to not make the shot as rough and to add an additional cut round instead of cutting directly to the cashers for Sunday. We decided to keep it simple when it came to the shot and we put out something that the majority of the field could figure out. Thankfully the scores reflected this as it took a team average of 413 (+130) for ten games to make the first cut and an average of 428 (+404) after 14 games to make the cash round. What went wrong year two, I’ll tell you, the A/C unit near the snack bar broke game 2 of qualifying. I was sitting right under the vent, sweating and typing. Who said typing was not a workout!

The good news is we went from 39 teams in 2007 to 55 teams in 2008. Teams stretched from Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, St. Louis & Tennessee and we look forward to welcoming everyone back plus more new faces. (HINT HINT) The money paid out for the prize fund, side pots & brackets went up 25% too!

Latise & I bowl scratch tournaments and one of the things we hate is when you cash and only get back what you put up to bowl. That’s why when you bowl either our monthly tournaments (Boards & Balls Tour) or Opposites Attract, we try and pay double your entry fee. Check out the results on www.40boards.com, you will see that both years we have paid at least $600 to the last cash spot based on the $300 entry fee. We recognize this takes a little of the money from the top spot but they still left with $3,500 (11 times the entry fee) last year. Just like 100% of the prize fund has to be paid back according to USBC, the same applies to pots and survival boards too.

What Pattern is down for the sweeper on Friday night?  The Pattern to be used on Saturday/Sunday? or a THS?

Shot for sweeper was close to the tournament shot.  It did play different mainly because they had more people bowling at the tournament then the sweeper and the A/C broke last year on Saturday.  Let's all pray that doesn't happen again.  LOL

Dear Lord don't let the air POP this year. Good news, last year it was 90° and this year it will be in the 70's. We're already ahead of the curve.

OH YEAH, there are only 8 spots left for Opposites Attract. I was told that some folks were thinking about coming, the remaining spots are FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED! Be there early so that you don't get turned away...

Jeff,

I'm going to assume that the Qualifying (10 Games) Round 1 is held on Saturday and the remaining Rounds 2 & 3 on Sunday?

I did not see that information on the flyer, or I just overlooked it.  See you tonight.

    Jeff,

Didn't see that the Shirley KOTH is tonight....I can't pass that up being only 30mins from my house, opposed to 1:15 for Glen Burnie.

    See you tomorrow for sure....

It was a two team race after game 14 between Kulick-Marshall and McConnell-Solomon as they had separated themselves from the field. The final 4 games were huge for Kulick-Marshall as they bowled the games needed to establish a comfortable lead. Meanwhile, McConnell-Solomon were fighting with the transition and allowing Reese-Schriner to make a play for 2nd. With 1 game to go, second went from a sure thing to a battle and it went to the 10th frame. Kevin Solomon needed to perform in the 10th to lock it up but after leaving the 3-6-10, Dan Schriner stuffed the hole and left a 4 pin. Kevin converted the spare and knocked 10 pins down which was an eleven hundred dollar swing for his team as they held onto 2nd by 6 pins.

We want to thank everyone who supported the tournament this year and we hope to see you back next year. Also, if you have any suggestions, complaints, etc. that you feel will help us improve, drop us an email or give us a call.

The tournament paid out a total of $89K roughly $10K at the sweeper and another $79K during OA.
