Can someone tell me why...
« on: October 06, 2009, 06:58:15 AM »
...people complain about entries when they don't bowl?

My point is that people will say entries are down at a tournament BUT they don't support it. If there are 30 entries and 10 guys saying "I would have come, but", then guess why there were only 30 entries.

I can tell you, in the Baltimore-Washington area, the tournaments draw about 30 people on a regular basis and there are 10 guys who have not been out for a month of Sundays. Can some of the naysayers please shed some light on this for me.

Come on Jeff. We've had this discussion before. It's the Fear Factor. Most of those people were regulars when we bowled on house shots all the time. Since we bowl on more varied patterns now and they can't wheel and deal all day they don't show up! The money and economy issue doesn't hold much water for me because most of those people still bowl league two or three nights a week(house shot-DUH!)and get in all the side action. So as I said, Fear Factor, like the TV show without worms and spiders!

I think its more of an ego thing myself and liked I have said for over a year now, go ahead and make them easy, the best will still shine.  Whens the last time a house bowler has won a tournament in their house?  It doesnt matter what you put out the best will usually adapt, so why not make them easy and draw entries?  Just a house bowlers opinion

"Fear Factor...without the worms & spiders!" FUNNY! While the economy has some effect, if folks want to spend money bowling they do, just like anything else. Last year, TNBA said the economy hurt the Bacardi but the Eastern Rhodman was sold out. Lets see, Bacardi used a difficult pattern while the Rhodman let folks shoot it out. HMM?

@Mike
I could not agree more about just leaving them soft and filling the house up. It's been the formula that Money Bags has had some success flooring. 40 Boards came to an agreement sometime ago that we aren't going to worry about the people we know. Or as I call 'em, "The 10 Percenters". That 10% that says make the shot tough will come even when the shot is easy.

I hope to see some people at Ft. Meade on Oct 11 and at Greenway on Oct 24.

Ive been saying it for some time now, that "core" will bowl regardless.  Yeah you will hear some whining about the scores being too high or whining about carry issues, but THEY WILL STILL BOWL!  The other 90%, to keep them bowling, must have them easy or they will not bowl and as you and every other person that bowls has seen by the drop off in entries.  Sad but true!

I can't fully agree with this statement.  Up in the New England area theres a monthly run tournament (NEBA) that has been going on for years.  And over the past 5 years the certain bowling alleys that continued to put out the easy shots where cuts where ending up +200 and above for 5 games began drawing less entries each time.  Why?  Because confident, talented bowlers don't want to compete when its simply a carry contest.  The best draws over the last few years have been the houses that have put out something that is playable yet still makes you throw good shots, which cuts have been closer to +50 to +100 over.  IMO there's a HUGE difference between making that playable and easy and around here playable has been drawing many more entries than easy.

Ahhhh....good ole NEBA....got my a** handed to me many times years ago by the likes of Mike Lichstein and Billy Webb...now, they are not house hacks (and they proved to me that I am a THS God (Hack))

@NoseofRI
In our area, we have that "playable" option but the folks aren't coming out. When I say playable we have bowled tournaments on Kegel Challenge Series, PBAx, USBC and some others to name a few. I saw 4 on a lane for 20 lanes at a 5 gamer when all of the house bowlers thought they'd dominate.

I think the problem is that guys come out one time and rate themselves on that sole performance. It's hard to have success if you only try one time. Imagine if guys used this thinking at league..."If I don't shoot 700 tonight I am quitting!" We would not have any leagues either. LOL

We have a monthly stepladder tournament where the cut is  185+ for three games. All day Saturday and then on Sunday until 3:00. You can bowl to qualify as many times as you want. Turn out is never an issue. First place pays 1000 to 1200 bucks.

Is the shot easy, definitely. Carry is always an issue. Generally, as stated, the cream seems to rise to the top, which is why I have never made it past 6th place.

BTW, the tournament is handicapped, but I can't recall a handicapped bowler winning once in the last two years.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

Most things we like, we don't need. Most things we need, we don't like. Don't confuse your likes with your needs.

Different area I guess then, because its the exact opposite here in the VA/MD/PA area.  The quick and cheap at Shirley would draw 80-120 entries for the day with a dead wall.  He started running tougher, but still playable, patterns and all the house bowlers stopped bowling.  I think he had 17 at his last one and so what happens, he stops running it and I don't blame him one bit.  At least in this area, guys want to strike and as soon as they can't they stop bowling.
