I hope you will not be offeneded if I pass on a bit of information -

Whenever you're bidding on a ball or any other item, be it on Ebay or anywhere else, consider not the isolated cost of shipping, but the price of the ball including the mandated "shipping" costs, as being the true price of the ball. Then set your limit accordingly.

Ranting and raving over the outrageous cost of shipping does no one any good since the "shipping" cost is obviously NOT the cost of shipping the ball, in 9 cases out of 10. If you do not know that Ebay and PayPal all have their associated costs, then learn that they do. Ignorance is not bliss.

E-bay is a funny place.  I have seen bidders get into a bidding war for a ball, when if they would have looked in the sellers store, the same ball was in the store also.  The ball in the store had a cheaper "buy-it-now" price than the bidders had gotten up to, by about $20 I believe.

If those bidders would have done a bit of research, they could have both gotten that ball and saved money too.

At other times, I have seen a specific ball get bid up very high, while another ball of the same make hardly gets a bid at all.  The weight and the specs on them will be VERY close and it makes me wonder why anyone would continue in a bidders war when they could just bid on another ball un-opposed?

Some sellers have multiple balls for sell.  They will post them for bids one at a time, but they will have the excess inventory in their e-bay stores for sale or bids also.

Also.  Some sellers have a "brick and mortar" business address in the real world. In an attempt to drum up business, they will occasionally run specials on prices or maybe knock off the shipping charges, especially if they don't have the e-bay fees to deal with.

Absolutely, in many cases, shipping fees are actually a combination of shipping charges, packaging costs (boxes, tape, labels, bubble wrap, etc.), eBay fees (listing fees, selling fees), paypal fees (like 2.7% or something of the total money received) and that's only if the selling is trying to cover costs.  I think somewhere around $20 (+/- $3) is reasonable as a shipping fee for a bowling ball.  The ones I have a problem with (and refuse to place a bid, just on principle) are the auctions trying to charge $30, $40, or $50 for shipping fees..

As far as why a seller would offer free shipping on their own site?  Well, to attract business!  If you buy a ball there, then maybe you will invest in their drilling services, or buy a set of finger grips, or some cleaner..  who know.  If nothing else, increase traffic to their site.

The Ebay sellers I have problems with are the ones who won't answer messages as to the pin and top weight which are available.

A couple weeks ago I sent out a 16lb ball via a UPS store that ended up costing 24 bucks. The buyer was located in California and I'm located in Maryland. With packaging materials, paypal and ebay fees, it ended up costing over 30 dollars...Sometimes it does actually cost that much.

Although, anything over than 35 is way too much
