I can't say that I've thrown the Gauntlet, or even seen the Gauntlet in person for that matter.  However, in support of the comments that Alex Hamilton just made regarding the results that he has noticed from his Gauntlet, "Bowling This Month" magazine did a write-up in their April, 2000 issue on the Gauntlet, and their conclusions seemed very much in agreement with the conclusions that Alex found.  BTM made the comment that the ball seemed to "back off" on the backends rather than make an aggressive charge, but this type of reaction could be very good for someone who really puts a lot of hand into the shot.   BTM commented that this ball seemed to be designed for the heavy-handed player that really liked to crank it up, but didn't want an overreaction on the backends.

The article on the Gauntlet went further to say that in addition to the Gauntlet being a good "all around" ball for the players that put a lot of hand into the shot, players with weaker hands could also find the Gauntlet to be a very controllable ball on very dry conditions, as well.  The Gauntlet would most likely perform very well for those who find a lot of the other reactive resin balls and particle balls too jumpy under some conditions.  Heavy crankers may find this ball very much to their liking, as they can supposedly can really turn it up, without the ball getting too wild.  It sounds as though this ball is about ball control, rather than a monster hook.  This ball apparently was intended for the bowler to make the difference on how much the ball moves, rather than the ball playing a major factor in itself.  Someone who is tired of fighting the newer balls on the lanes may well find that the Gauntlet is something that they could learn to like very easily.

I bought my Gauntlet because Bowling This Month wrote it up as a ball that you could really hit and not worry about over-reaction.

For me, one of the toughest shots I ever bowl on is a very fresh wet/dry condition because I have a lot of rotation. I was hoping the Gauntlet would solve this problem.

The pin on my Gauntlet was approximately 2 inches from the CG.

I used the control drill recommended on the ball's drillsheet with Pin in the center of the grip and CG kicked out towards the PAP roughly on the midline.

A large weighthole was drilled on the PAP to render 1/2 oz of negative weight.

According to the sheets this drill was supposed to provide length of 3 (average) on a scale of 1-5 -- Backend 1 (Minimal) on a scale of 1-5. I left the ball at factory surface.

The center I do the bulk of my bowling at has wood lanes that were just re-done this past summer, so the lanes are in pretty nice shape.

Last Tuesday I ran into the shot I dread. The lanes were oiled down about 32 feet or so and the backends were absolutely flying.

After struggling through the first game I finally remembered I had the Gauntlet sitting in the locker for just this purpose.

The Gauntlet cleared the heads ok, but it snapped every bit as hard and uncontrollably on the backends as my other equipment while not hitting nearly as crisply.

The Gauntlet may be an average ball (at best), but it was a huge disappointment for me that I couldn't hit it like Bowling This Month claimed.

I have shot with it on carrydown and on that condition its fundamental nature is to be even, but I already have a Titanium Messenger that does that with a much harder hit.

So, if you are looking for control on a fresh shot -- save your money -- this ball is not the answer and there are better hitting balls on the market that give you a similar look on the lane.

If anyone wants to buy it let me know - I will be more than happy to sell it!

I can't say enough good about this ball.  My only other review I waited a month or more before writing about it, but this one can't.  I had heard alot of mixed reviews about both here and elsewhere, so I was a little hesitant to get it.  A great deal on ebay changed my mind though.
The pin is about 2-3" and it had 4 ounces of top weight.  I had it leverage drilled with the pin out and down from my ring finger.  What a performer!!!!  Someone wrote a review that this ball is afraid of the pocket, this one is surely not.  It hits HARD and the backend flip is sharp and makes a great angle entry.  I never leave bad shots with it, and it rolls very consistantly.  It goes where you put it.
    I am a pretty consistent bowler, I don't shoot alot of super 2's but I rarely shoot under 180 as well.   I am a 200 avg. so this was pretty good for me- 1st game--238, 2nd--239, 3rd--241  4th 200.
It doesn't send pins flying off the walls like my AMF Menace or SPT but it doesn't leave them standing either.  Highly recommend this one.  control-9, backend-10  carry-9

I guess I have enough games on this ball to write a review on it. 16lb, 3" pin, about 3 oz top. I bought this ball as other mentioned, Bowling This Month seemed to think this ball would not over react on the back end. Plus I got it for very reasonable $.

First mistake was mine, had it drilled 3 3/8" stacked. Probably too strong. Dull I couldn't seem to get this ball down the lane. I didn't plan on using it as an oiler so I had it polished to 5000. It shined really well.

This ball has the strongest backend of anything I own. When it starts to hook it just keeps on coming hard. Although this isn't the ball I expected, I can't say it is a bad ball. Just not the reaction I as looking for (probably my fault for having it drilled that way).

Likes: Hits great. Versatile cover. Color. Strong hook. Plays great deep inside.
Dislikes: Stronger then I expected. Smells weird.

I got this ball for quite a while, probably around a year. I find it pretty weak initially. But once I start to increase the revs on it, it was very controllable. However when the lanes are dry I couldnt even send it out before it start making its move to the pocket.

In comparison to my current arsenal it is still better than my Complete Chaos, Cuda/C 2000, but still a notch down as compared to BWP.

This ball is flat out amazing. Very controllable and predictable hook. Better pin mix than I expected. Purchased it from Ebay on a whim (partly because I've never seen one and I like throwing odd equipment)
