TV: Sat., Jan. 22, 4 pm EST/3 pm CST

Comments: Fach has been throwing it well lately ... know nothing of Runk ... Dombrowski had to fight to get back in the number late, taking out Paul Smith in the 28th game.

Comments: Almost had Dick Allen in this one, too (Archer overtook him in game 28), which would have really given us an old-guy show. Don't know much about Stouffer or Sambueno. This was a lower-scoring region except for Jones, who blew everyone away.

Comments: Johnson led most of the way; Tackett and Russo had to come from way back in the field to get in. Don't know Mavrick.

Comments: Lowest-scoring of the regions. Schenk (Cortez-Schenk? I don't know him) beat Sam Cooley by 9 pins for the final spot, had to come from like 15 down at the start of that game. Welcome back, Belmo.

I really like this format because it introduces us to new guys we may have not seen otherwise. I have known the name Arturo Quintero for what seems like 20 years but now we will get a chance to see him under the lights. Secondly; I really hope Brad and Kyle vlog during their match. I doubt they will but would be cool to see the match from a different perspective.

East- Dombrowski is a sleeper there. Tremendous talent, he'd obviously have to run the table but it would be great to see.

Saw Colie Edison's name mentioned above and I think she was one of the best assets they had in recent years; it's going to be tough to replace her. Last thing the tour needs is to hire someone who wants to P.T. Barnum everything up; I still have nightmares of those years where every other telecast was a trickshot/"skills" challenge show, especially with Dave Ryan on the call.

A guess for the lower payout being be because of turnout. The prize fund posted by the PBA was 1:3 based on 96 entries....they had 51 entries at the one Brad Miller bowled in.

Entries in other areas being 94, 60, 56, and 64.

Between Omicron, inflation through the roof, and the fact this came on the heels of the RPI in Vegas; it would not surprise me that entries would have been lower compared to last year.

Thanks for the heads up on the TV shows. I replaced my DVR some time back and it didn't save my "favorites" of shows recorded in the past. I like the regional format as well.

I love bowling, but honestly, who would even want to try and make a decent living at it anymore?

Yeah, maybe if you've got a ball contract where you get free equipment (and paid well to win with it), a shoe deal, and a clothes deal. Then, you own your own chain of 20 pro shops in large, metropolitan bowling areas, and have EVERYTHING YOU OWN paid for, I might could see it. You might have to still give lessons to make it even then.

Bowling can no longer be considered a profession. The time has come and gone when you could expect to turn professional and make a good wage doing it.

Heck, they were paying more/bigger prize funds back in the 1960's and 1970's than they are now, and that's back when a buck was a buck.

I lost to his brother Mario Quintero at the Super Hoinke in either the 5th or 6th round 20 or so years ago, Mario went on to take 2nd place that year, I was long gone by then but I heard he stoned an 8 pin and then flagged it to end up tied and lost the roll off. It was long ago so that might not be exactly how it went down but if not it was something similar. Against me he left a blower 7-10 in the 10th to give me a chance to double and beat him but I didn't get the 2nd strike.

I have thought the exact same thing. I see a lot of parents with kids that are good bowlers really pushing their kids to go pro. Spending tons of money for a coaching team etc. Why? I could see pushing them into it at the college level to get some scholarship money or something, but I would never encourage any kid to try and make a living as a professional bowler. Maybe bowl at the PBA regional level a few times and see how it goes, but never encourage throwing caution to the wind and going on the full PBA National tour. Having the success of WRW, PDW, Norm Duke, etc. is just so rare.

I don't even think the guys on staff/with contracts get totally free stuff anymore. They can pick any ball they want off the "ball truck", but still pay $50/ball to have it drilled. You basically have to know you can afford the entry fees and have a legitimate shot at cashing. Otherwise it is just a total waste of money.

I am not sure I would call it a complete waste. Kyle just set the record for earnings in a season with over $300,000 and I believe that was just for the National side. That doesnt include regionals or any other tournaments he bowled. Secondly, a lot of these guys do have sponsors. There are plenty of guys out there that rarely make a show and yet still seemingly make it to every tournament (guys like Kyle Sherman). Some of the prize funds have increased with stops like the playoffs paying $100,000 to win. While not everyone can be Troup or Belmo; there are guys like Prather that didnt do much his first year but then won a major and the playoffs the next for a nice chunk of change that season. None of us really knew who Buttruff was and then all of a sudden he comes out and seems like he was making almost every show a few years back. Every year there are handful of guys like Koeltzow and Crowell IV that sneak up on your and make a show.
