today on ESPN at Noon, Eastern time??
Have you all gotten so jaded you can no longer appreciate exciting professional bowling, even when it's the PBA, which I also have many reservations about!!
This was good bowling, exciting TV and good personalities.
Ok. Don't watch it. Who cares? I enjoyed it immensely all by myself!
-
I was following the tournament online from the start since I did not have Xtra Frame or any other access. Belmonte had an immense lead in the early rounds but had trouble once match play began. Because of some scheduling conflicts, I missed the television finals.
The US Open format sounds like a survival test. Did Randy Petersen comment on why perhaps Belmonte may have run out of gas? Could it have been that Belmonte's two handed style is a drawback in a US Open format?
-
I was just happy to see Belmonte bowl bad and lose. I am so tired of seeing him on TV.
Congrats to Big Wes on his first major..
-
I missed it. Did not realize it was on today until it was already over. Usually I look for bowling on Sunday's tv schedule, was not expecting it on a Saturday.
-
I called ESPN and asked if it would be replayed anytime on either ESPN or ESPN2 but it will not be.
It will be on ESPN Classic but I don't have that channel.
-
I thought the women bowled great .. first time that I can remember where Belmo bowled bad!
-
I wasn't awake yet lol
-
I promptly changed the channel when I saw how they shortchanged Marshall.
-
Thought it was tomorrow.
-
I watched it when I wanted too, thats what dvr's are for--- way to go WES!!
-
Lol my dvr missed it...that p.o.s.
-
"and, uh... she's got the best balls in her hands too..." - Wes Malott
Actually Wes... I don't think she handles that sort of equipment...
-
I watched it, and didn't like that match #1 wasn't shown except for a few highlights. I also didn't like the format used in match #2 where they had 2 matches going on at the same time. It would have been better having 2 shows back to back, where they could have showed the stepladder finals in its entirety.
That being said, I'm glad that the Big Nasty finally got his revenge on Belmonte and got that first major. He made that Hy-Road Pearl look sweet. Johnson winning another major was cool to see also. She does my hometown proud.
-
I also watched today and was happy for Wes Malott.

I was originally excited but once again ESPN must make bowling look like the Jim Rome side show that they think it is. It seemed rushed and short changed. I wanted to see Marshall Kent because that kid can bowl his behind off. I bet if it was Pete Weber and Wes Malott in Match 1, it would have magically made its way into the tv show. Although the concept of the battle of the sexes was a novel idea, it was boring to watch because it seemed after a while, IMO, there was no incentive to bowl, especially with Wes's knee giving him fits. Overall, it was ok, but it would have been better on CBS Sports,.... right after Jim Rome, lol!
-
For the battle of the sexes, do the woman and the men bowl on the same pair? The same condition.
It seemed many years ago I saw something like this and they were on adjoining pairs with different applications of oil. This time?

Got the email... but forgot to dvr it. Congrats to Wes for beating Belmo.

My understanding was they used the pair the women had used but had stripped and re-oiled them.

Yeah thats what they did.
It reached a point after the first couple of frames where Wes just didn't really seem to care. I can't really blame him, he had just won his first major. All the adrenaline starts to wear off and the knee starts hurting more, and I'm sure the thought is to just get it over.

Shocking, someone that grasps the concept that Marshall was shortchanged. Bowled like a boss all week and then get 2-3 shots of actual air time? ESPN is a farce. If they are going to air bowling, air it. Keep in mind, this is the same network that has zero problem looping SPORTSCENTER for 7+ hours or talking about any eastern seaboard sports franchise ad nauseum. Marshall was the only reason I even took time out of my Saturday to watch. Nevertheless, Ill just continue to practice with him this fall.

trust me. I felt shortchanged, Im pretty sure friends and fam of Marshall who wanted to root for him felt shortchanged and overall......., I felt bad for the girl bowling beside PDW when he had one of his ghost movement moments. lol! where the hell was he pointing? when the camera cut to watch him from the rear angle, where he was pointing, NO ONE was there! lol! then you see this poor girl who looked like a deer in the head lights looking at Pete trying not to get in his way.
at the end of the day, ESPN just doesnt respect bowling but they dont want bowling to grow on another station. its almost as if they have something against bowling but it is what it is.
-
Put bowling back where it belongs -- Saturday on wide world of sports - I believe it was at 3pm --- I know football rules over bowling. But that's where it did broadcast live for many years!
-
Personally I was thrilled to see Danielle McEwen on the show. She is a local who I remembered seeing bowl in our local junior travel league. Great talent.
Combine her success with that of one of our local boys, Joe Steiner, and it makes us upstate New Yorkers pretty proud.
-
Just finished watching it on DVR. I agree that the bowling schedule is so helter skelter tha you have to be absurdly dedicated to know when there is a new broadcast. Yeah networks bare some blame, but what is the season/ schedule for the PBA these days? Is there one? There just seems to be a cluster of tournaments played over a cople weeks at the same place, and then broadcast them on tape for a month.
Even the league.... I was intrigued by the concept...excited that there was a Philly team (no...seriously), but all of the league games were played at one location? I mean why have teams 'from' cities if no matches are actually played there? I'd have gone to Philadelphia home matches. But I'm supposed to,identify with the team now just because Philadelphia is written on the jersey?
I'm ranting. I enjoyed the show...good for Wes. But yes I would have liked to see more step ladder.
Oh...and did they even mention the specific equipment each bowler was using? That's so ancillary that they felt the need to eliminate that from broadcasts? Why do ball companies even sponsor? My son and I are sitting here deducing which balls are being used (admittedly not all that difficult if you geek out about these things.
-
Seems like the may have mentioned them, but I don't really remember seeing them posted up like the used to. I know Wes and Belmonte were using Highroad Pearls and I think Liz was using the Marvel S, but that was mainly from just knowing the balls.

You would be correct. Pete Weber, Wes Malott, Diandra Asbaty, and Kelly Kulick all used the Hy-Road Pearl.
Jason Belmonte used the Hy-Road Pearl but then switched to the Shatter.
Liz Johnson used the Marvel-S and threw the Defiant Soul for 1 shot in the 10th frame against McEwan.
Danielle McEwan used a Marvel Pearl.
Marshall Kent went with the IQ Tour Solid.
-
That's what I figured out as well. But we're geeks (I say that lovingly). If I'm a ball manufacturer and the pros are in TV AND using my new releases, I'd want to see bright shiny graphics pop up on the screen telling all casual bowlers who are watching what these awesome new balls are. It's more of a criticism on ESPN.
-
I missed it because I was bowling in a SASBA Member/Guest Doubles Tournament in Houston. Glad to hear that Wes got his first Major. Maybe this will be the start to another big year for him.
-
Northface, You'd be better off blaming the BPAA for wanting a televised battle of the sexes match than ESPN. If it weren't for them wanting an exhibition match, you certainly would have seen more of Mr. Kent.
By the way, I've never seen anyone loft the cap with a cleaner release than Mr. Kent. Sick!

The US Open format sounds like a survival test. Did Randy Petersen comment on why perhaps Belmonte may have run out of gas?
Randy did mention during the semifinals that after the last round of match play PDW said that he could bowl another 8 games if needed while Belmo said he couldn't throw another shot. Now I'm sure that was a little hyperbole on Belmo's part, but it sounds like he was pretty worn out and maybe that carried over into the finals. With that said the US Open is obviously a grind and I'm sure all the players were drained, and that makes what Wes did on Saturday, so soon after surgery, all the more impressive to me. Also, to echo other's statements, I must tip my hat to Marshall Kent. That's a hell of a week of bowling from the young amateur and its a shame that we didn't get to see his match, but I'm sure we'll see more of him soon!
-
I like the shows on CBS Sports Network better than any of the ESPN coverage. CBS seems to plan it out well and allot more than enough time for bowling, interviews, etc.
Every time I watch bowling coverage on ESPN there seems to either be something missing, coverage wise, or rushed to cram everything in. With that being said, congrats to Liz and Wes on their major victories.
-
The format that meant excluding the 3 vs. 4 matches was BPAA's not ESPN's.
-
They said on the Broadcast that the lanes for the Battle of the Sexes had been stripped and re-oiled. Now whether it was or not I don't know, just going by what Randy Peterson said on the broadcast.
-
Correct
-
Watched and recorded for future reference. It was nice to see the PBA back on Saturday afternoon. Spent many a Saturday watching the PBA and then going out and bowling with my Dad. A ritual we looked forward to every week and didn't miss to many either.

Granted I'm not normal ( if you notice I make a ton of my posts in the early morning) but 11:30 is early :P
