First time regional entry
« on: September 20, 2013, 09:42:50 AM »
Looking into bowling my first PBA regional here in the next couple months. What advice would you give to prepare for this. Also, being that the rules are a bit different than regular tournaments, what all should I be prepared to do prior to the event?

From my post in the Misc section.

Here's my advise-
Understand the one pair lane courtesy

Double check that all your equipment including bags and shirts are product registered

Your participating in a professional event, dress and act the part

Go to the practice session, but don't get too committed to what you see, everyone strikes in practice.  The winner of practice session usually doesn't have the same look on Saturday morning.

If you wait until you think your game is ready you may never go.  You need to go bowl to have a better understanding on how things work and what you will need to do to be competitive if this is what you want to do.

Keep your expectations low because there will probably be at least a handful of guys from the big tour and you will soon realize just how good the guys that bowl for a living really are.  You may think you know, but they are a whole other level beyond that.

And as the weekend goes on the lanes usually get tighter to the outside and hook more in the middle, so if the little bit of hold you thought you had in practice on Friday isn't there Saturday morning, this is pretty normal.

Attend the non-member meeting.  Ask questions if you are unsure.  Know the equipment rules, attire rules, and lane courtesy.

Lane courtesy is actually really easy..  Visualize it next time you are at league or something..  For example, You are on 3.   I am on 4.   You are ready to go.  Wait for someone on 1 or 2 AND 5 or 6 (even though 6 is 3 lanes over its only one pair) to bowl.  Then you bowl and leave a 10 pin.  Then I have to wait for someone on 1 or 2 AND 5 or 6 to bowl then I go, I strike.  THen someone on 1 or 2 AND 5 or 6 goes, then you shoot your ten pin....  In the case that I am not ready to bowl, you may shoot your 10 pin before I go, but still after someone on 1 or 2 AND 5 or 6 bowls..   Hope that makes sense?
