Title: Discussion of PBA Trials
Post by: janderson on June 01, 2004, 08:52:29 PM
Continues the discussions from
http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=55130&ForumID=86&CategoryID=5

We'll track progress here.
--------------------

The PBA tour trials in Merilleville to determine the final 8 exempt spots for the 2004-2005 season are just around the corner. Anyone beside me excited about watching the leader board change over the course of 5 days and 45 games? Is there anyone who will be trying their luck? (If so, good luck!)

Maybe we should have a friendly competition to see which one of us predicts the most bowlers who end up winning exemptions. Pick 8 bowlers before the start of competition ... whoever gets the most of their 8 picks right becomes the "BR Crystal Ball Master"

Janderson, I've been told, by folks that bowl with him, that Mike has a truly great physical game, so I'm not too surprised at this.  The trick will be, can he sustain this, over four more patterns?  I hope so.  I've admired Mike "eddie" Edwards for a long time.

Well, 45 games is a long week and there is a long way to go. Plant-n-heave, thanks for the information on Mike.  I wasn't familiar with his game.

With 45 games, anyone think we will see a 10,000 score?

Some that I want to make it are Randy Pedersen, Lee Vanderhoef, Del Ballard, Mike Wolfe, Brain Kretzer, Ricky Ward and Jeff Carter. I would also like to see one female I dont really care who. I cant believe someone would not want Eugene McCune to make it but at the same time want Chris Collins to make it. Chris Collins has got to have to worst attitude in the world, not to mention this guy whines so much that people dont even want to cross with him (I crossed with him twice in one day). If the exempt tour featured those who kick ball returns the hardest and curse the loudest then Mr. Collins certainly gets my vote. He makes Eugene, while Eugene isnt the nicest guy in the world, look like Mother Teresa.

Wow, I'm amazed someone said Kendra Gaines would do well.

I would never expect Woman to do their best on pattern B.
I see she's 3rd after 7.

I also saw that someone said Elliot Ten was great. I'm surprised I don't know who he is as I was originally from Florida during my Bowling life.

REgards,

PS my old league teammate Jimmy Keeth can still crank with anyone!

The scores were high and my countryman Tomas Leandersson kept up well ending the day in thirteenth place. Well done, Tomas!

One of my picks did end up in the top eight: Mike Edwards.

AH Ha!

Personnally I cannot imagine a woman besides Michelle Feldman tearing up on B!

Is it today? We will see when B comes. However, still count me as impressed!

Pattern A yes, I can see that.  Backend delivered by the lanes!  Accuracy is the key!

JAnderson. Thanks for the update.

I like this, it is like fantacy bowling maybe we should do something like this for the fall tour.

I was totally sleeping on Mike Edwards though, I think he has as good of a game as anyone out there.

Today's scores through 4 games on Pattern B

 26, Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J., 906

So far, I'd say the answer is a definitive YES!

17, (TIE) Tomas Leandersson, Sweden, 922

13th place on A, 17th so far on B.

Anyone know how to say "carry" in Swedish?

What a difference a day, and a pattern, makes:

Round 1 (9 games)
15, David Traber, Bull Valley, Ill., 2,042, $300

Round 2 (after 5 games)
125, David Traber, Bull Valley, Ill., 857

I'll bet Trabes is looking forward to pattern E...

Fantasy bowling, interesting.  I suppose we could do something like the PBA does with the sponsor teams.  We have a draft and each person chooses 3-4 pros to be on our own team.  Points determined the same way with the sponsor teams, or we could devise our own point system.  It would be fairly easy since most of the stops will be 64-entry match play.  Could even have side winners for high average, cash, and match-play record.

Anyone ever see or run a fantasy bowling league?

Thanks janderson for keeping track and taking note!

Seadrive, actually there is no exact equivalent to "carry" in Swedish. I guess the most commonly used word is "kom" which means "come on". I've heard good players here actually use the word "carry" to exhort the bowling gods to let all the pins fall. Tomas Leandersson has been heard to say "carry" as his ball approaches the pocket.

well, LL...

Looking just at results on Pattern B, both Kelly and Missy were in the top half of the field at 31 and 57 respectively.

And for the 18 games, Kelly is in 27th, Kendra at 32nd and Missy in 61st...all of which are top half of the field.

Kelly is 128 pins back of the #8 spot and Kendra is 155 pins back.

It ought to be an interesting last three days

Unfortunately, it looks like Kelly is out of it unless she really gets it turned around in the last five games.

Both Missy and Kendra are at a higher pace today than a lot of the field, but both had too much ground to make up.

The move of the day to watch looks to be Hoskins...143 pins back with 5 to go and running at a 260 pace.  Of course, Jensen and Simard (1st and 2nd today so far) are also scoring at a pretty good clip (yeah, I know...understatement), which means that the Trials get drama to the end.

Wow - Jim Pratt squeaked in there to hold the eigth position.  Jim's a good competitor who (until now) was one of the better Western regional pros.  Maybe with him touring next year, I'll have a better chance at winning money in the Arizona scratch tournaments.

Seriously, if you catch this Jim, nice job.  I'm happy for you.  Congratulations to all of the bowlers who participated and especially to those who got the covetted 8 positions.

I'm still in awe of Pratt's game.  The last thing I expected was a guy to go out there throwing without a thumb in the ball and end up in the Top 8.  Congrats Jim!
And despite some people voicing their dislike for him on this site, all I have to say is Eugene McCune is the man!
