fast lane pepsi open

i competed in my 2nd pba regional this weekend in chillicothe, missouri, about 45 minutes east of where i live. this tournament was contested on pba regional/senior pattern #5....44' of oil with the outsides much slicker than the middle. first, congrats to jason wojnar on winning his first pba regional title---way to go !

to a league hack like myself who averages 225-230 on a house shot this oil pattern is about 360 degrees different from what i'm used to. i never get a chance to bowl or practice on this but i gave it my all anyway. i finished at +23....not bad but i missed several single pin spares. i used a dull scorchin' inferno most of the day and played a small swing shot from 18 to 14 with medium speed. my high game was 229 and my low game was 186----my only game under 200. you could tug the ball a hair and get away with it but if you got the ball right of 10 it wouldn't come back.

for those of you who haven't bowled a regional tournament you owe it to yourselves to give it a try and see how you can do on a tough pattern. these guys who do well at the regional level( jeff carter, david beres, david traber, etc. )don't make many bad shots and pounce all over you when you make a mistake. i didn't get a chance to talk to jeff as he was done and was trying to leave----he said it wasn't his day and that's a pretty good attitude to have instead of cussing and throwing things. if we're lucky maybe jeff will give us his opinions on this tournament.

Well, my opinion on the tournament itself is....job well done. For a brand new bowling center that is less than a year old, they did a fantastic job. Very well laid out center, the staff took very good care of us and the crowds were pleasantly nice. The pro-am was certainly above average in participation and everybody seemed to be happy that we were there.

As far as the lane conditions go, i certainly have my opinion as to what went on. Pattern #5 is by far my favorite pattern and is the one pattern that is designed to let the "hook" guys have their day. The original concept in the pattern shapes was to give the "straight" guys 2 patterns, the "hook" guys 2 patterns, and to have 1 pattern that everybody has options. The problem that i have is using the highest volume of oil on the longest pattern on a brand new Anvilane lane surface. All that did was force everybody left with a ton of surface. I saw guys throwing 500 grit balls through 25 on their first shot in practice. WTF !!! Where the heck do they expect you to go after that ? Then the straighter players are limited as to how far left they can go, so the lane becomes totally black/white. In my opinion ( as well as many other players ) the lanes were broken down wrong. We should have used the low or medium volume to allow players to start farther right and chase it in as the day went on.

With that being said, i just didnt bowl very well. Sometimes there is no clear cut answer as to what was wrong, i just felt "off" all weekend long. My timing felt a pinch late, i felt like i was chasing my release and i just felt like i had no momentum at all. It was just one of those weekends that nothing seemed to fit together for me. Even today during practice i felt the same. Obviously something swing is out of line and my timing is off. Just goes to show you that you can feel great one week and horrible the next

jeff, i can relate to using dull equipment for this tournament. being a straight player i played a very small swing shot( 15 to 13 ) using a 600 grit scorchin' inferno. even by the end of the day i was using a 4,000 grit red zone playing 18 to 14. not being a power player i was right of just about everybody. i thought i threw the ball well but will need more practice on this type of pattern----you just don't see this in league and the center i bowl leagues at won't put anything else out.

i too would have prefered to start farther right----a down and in shot near the 1st arrow and have it transition left as the day went on. but, that's the way it goes. this was a good test for me to see how well i was throwing the ball. i came out of this tournament will some positive feedback that i can build on.
