Title: How much do bowlers get paid by ball companies?
Post by: bowlallthetime on October 02, 2005, 11:44:44 AM
Does anyone know what kind of money bowlers make from ball companies.  I know they get bonuses when they make a show or win.  How much do they get?  Also, how much do they pay guys like PA and Chris Barnes to throw their equipment?

Barnes probably has the Biggest Ball Contract there is.

To answer your question, some pro's get paid by their sponsors and some dont. Ones like Chris Barnes and Patric Allen do, well PA did. But pleanty of others are just sponsored and get to use equipment for free. Tommy Deltuz Jr. is not with RotoGrip anymore, but he is kind of sponsored by Ebonite because they just keep sending and sending him more ebonite balls for free, and he is bowling very well with them.

i doubt chris barnes is making $125,000 a year in salary from columbia----the big money for staffers is basically a thing of the past.

Not sure if I can agree with you on this one. I got off the phone with my pro and he said that Tommy D. was getting more money from someone (I guess it's Ebonite now...) for $130,000 plus, and that's why he left Roto-Grip.

I know that the bulk of the contracts got cut 4 or 5 years ago.

Columbia was paying $500 to $1000 a month at that time to their staffers.

Only Parker, Barnes, Duke, Weber where getting any real money.

Walter Ray will not sign because he doesn't feel they are willing to pay what he is worth.

I did hear that Barnes signed for around $100,000 a year. But those kind of contracts are few and far between.

Columbia does pay Barnes $100,000+ a year, so dont doubt it.

So let me get this straight. The only money the pros make anymore is if they win on the tour right? Do any of them still get incentives or anything? I'm starting to see why folks might not want to go pro so they can bowl in the mega buck tourneys, especially with this new kingpin tourney that'll be happening soon.

Then, add the fees that the PBA jacks up the ball mfg.s and you see that the smaller ball mfg.s aren't going to register with the PBA nor worry about carrying a Nat'l staff or pay pro's.  It's only a matter of time when you will only see a few larger companies register with the going rate that the PBA charges.  Most companies will see the $ better spent somewhere else in their budgets.

If you make a show there is additional money.

Even non-staffers get incentive money for using a ball on the show. The amount depends on the company, the ball being used, and whether or not you win.

These can range from $2000 to $7000 with most in the 2k to 5k range.

There are plenty of guys out there making $$$, just off of ball contracts.   The guys get free stuff and X amt of dollars per month.  Some also get incentives for making a show and/or winning.   Also some guys may be on multiple staffs.  i.e.  Grips, shoes, clothing, etc.

I beleive that Timmy Mack probaly gets more than the aveage tour player. He was at the shop last week and sold two Fire Up's to 2 customers that had planned to buy balls, This guy is a serious force in the  overseas market for Storm.
