Just a reminder for those who seem to forget, PBA scores weren't that much lower during the plastic ball era.  Scores fluctuated from week to week just like today, depending on the lane surface, oil, etc., but there were still higher scoring events.  Look at these results from a tournament held 30 years ago -- it took a 231 average just to make it to the TV finals.

Dan Belcher is correct!

Balls don't matter if you "adjust" the oil pattern. Make em easy enough I could strike with a Titleist.

TQR was cheetah, but they were using normal equipment so I guess it wasn't modified for plastic only.

I looked at most of the tournaments from 1979.  The higher scoring tournaments took 226-230 for TV.  However, there were a number of tournaments that took mid to low 210s to make TV.  In those tournaments high qualifier would be 220-225. Most of the time a low 220 would be on TV.

It was modified...30ml of oil at its thickest. Pretty blended, not hard at all.

Yep, and there were some tournaments where it only took a 217 average to be the #1 seed.  The point being that no matter what equipment they use, the scores are more dependent on lane conditions than anything else.

(Would anyone else not be surprised if scores dropped as the tournament went on?  The patterns always play tighter and tighter as the tournament goes on, I bet we'll see less and less bounce off the gutter by Sunday)

If it was modified for the qualifying.. why were the scores so much lower with the normal equipment ??

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like the top 10 are those who can put the REVS on the ball.

For the TQR it was the Cheetah.

For the plastic ball tournament it has been VERY modified.

Insert foot, because Belmo is up to 14th.  Maybe wait until more than 2 games to start making comments?

I would really liked to know what line they are playing?

- Is anyone standing left?
- Are they all (Ones rev'ing it up) playing the same line?

It would definitely be interesting to see.

Nothin' like +260 in your back five games to make for a slow start.
