Is anyone getting tired of seeing the same 5 oil patterns that they lay out?
There are definitely harder patterns out there.

I definately agree its time for the PBA to change its oil patterns. Weve had these patterns for quite some time now, although they didn't always have the same name. I know they do some tweaking year after year to make them a little bit different, but I think its time for a total revamp of the patterns, Majors excluded such as the 50 foot TOC and the US Open.

CHEETAH every week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
New format for the TV finals...
Each game is bowled across 5 pairs with each pattern,
but the patters are not the same on each pair, but there are 2
of each of the five. Bowlers alternate starting on a pair. You can choose
3 balls to bring with you from pair to pair.
Should you strike on frame 10 you move to the bonus pair which could be ANYTHING.
Needs to be random, no more "Oh it's the shark this week, so the players are playing like this in the finals."
More like "Oh, I bet Tommy Jones wishes he used plastic on that shot."

On stepladder finals, the higher seed gets the choice of using the lane condition that is out there or is allowed to call in a lane man and have the lanes stripped and oiled to his/her exact specification. You can make the left lane one way and the right lane another way or you can have both the same.
You can have the lanes easy like a AMF typical short oil house shot or you can ask for the Cheetah pattern, or you can ask to have heavy oil outside of 10 but nothing in the middle for 40 feet or you can ask to strip the lanes and don't oil at all. That would be interesting!
-
I like that they use the same pattern for the show as during the week. This business of random patterns for each frame or re-oiling the lanes just the way one person likes it is just a gimmick.
I don't like that they practice and warm up on the TV pair. There are dozens of pairs they could use to warm up, even an extra pair on the show as a backup. Use those. Then four or five balls on each lane right before the match.
I would like to see, say, 8 or 10 patterns and the PBA chooses five to use for the season. Next season, keep some and change the rest. Using the same five patterns for basically the last five or six years is too long.

I'd like to see new patterns that played more like the Cheetah. I find the Cheetah to be the most different of the 5 named patterns that are used now, as it maximizes the boards near the gutter and not the track area. Maybe there should be a pattern or two that are flatter in the back, or a straight up reverse block.
-
I think that they need to add 1 or 2 patterns that force the players to go around it a bit more. For the most part, straighter is greater on 4 of the 5 animal patterns in today's PBA unless the lane surface dictates otherwise.

50 foot TOC shot? did you watch the tournament this year? definitely NOT 50 foot. if that shot was 50 foot our shot must be 20 foot.

GO CUBS!!!!

If they'd stop the practice of excessive warm up time and lane manipulation, they wouldn't need new patterns. People would actually play the intended pattern. What a concept.

50 feet with pretty much the same oil volume as the rest of the patterns, perhaps less... will not seem to play like 50'!

According to Ric back right after the TOC, they didn't use the same 50' pattern they've been using. I think (don't quote me) that it was a 42' pattern similar to the Masters pattern. They did it because they didn't want to shut out the old timers who had been invited back, the guys who have been out of it for 10+ years. The 50' shot was nothing like they'd bowled on when they were out on tour.
The 50' pattern doesn't have to be a 50' heavy oil pattern the way that Shark is a 44' heavy pattern. Most guys have said that the TOC pattern is long and thin, you need mostly weaker, rolly stuff. Something that won't burn up in the thin, lighter oil but rolly enough to start moving before the end of the pattern.

the pba needs to start using the christmas tree pattern that was utilized the last year abc-tv carried the tour( 1997 ). every week a christmas tree pattern with several varities in length was used. it varied anywhere from 32' to appx. 40'. the key is that this pattern was playable for all styles, righty and lefty, straight player and cranker. it was also tough. shotmaking was at a premium. there were weeks where the entire field averaged less than 200. but you had the absolute best players making the telecast. walter ray williams, jr., was the only player to average over 220 and win as many as three titles.

HEY it was tax day, and I needed something to take my mind off my money lol
But I do think there needs to be more of an unknown factor in it.
Maybe run the tournament during the week like the trails, and use all of the patterns, then for the finals randomly pick a pattern.

Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion, Tiger, Bear oh my!
--------------------
my vote for president is green nikes

How would I play these:
Scarecrow-I don't have the brains
Tin Man- Not enough heart to try
Lion-No courage here
Tiger-Spend alot of money and still no results
Bear-Better have a good defense, no offense on this pattern
Well I guess no PBA titles for me.

I really like the skunk pattern, it really stinks and should provide for some low scoring. The tin man is a little fishy, too easy for me.

I have to agree with Greg Hoppe on this one, I think they ought to go back to the old days and try shorter christmas tree patterns with different amounts of oil. I also think they should go back to the strips and ramps type patterns. Also some of the flatter more sportier patterns that kegel has been known to put out over the years might be fun to see on tv. I just don't want to see people play the gutter every week. I would rather see patterns like the shark pattern where people are forced to play more inside or patterns that players are forced to play from like 7-9 area and out of bounds on both sides of it.

If you are not using Storm, go kick yourself hard!!!
-
I agree with the guys that said limit practice on the TV pair. Stop letting them burn a shot & then know exactly the reaction they will get for the show. Two shots on each lane just before they bowl. Practice/warm-up on alternate pair only. That would change the whole show in my opinion.

The Boardwalk Pattern straighter up the gutter than the Cheetah?
I haven't gotten a chance to bowl on the Kegel Pattersn, I wan't too tho, I hear the Sport Series shots are pretty brutal.
-
The Boardwalk pattern at the Chattanooga, TN sectionals for singles had plenty of free hook to the outside. By no means did you have to play straight up 2. I watched MacLelland playing pretty deep along with being on the pair with Tim Pfeifer who started swinging from about 7 out to the gutter then later just played in.
Boardwalk pattern is not the easiest but there were many collegiate bowlers average 200+ on the pattern with the top 4 at 220+. Don't get me wrong, it's 2.4:1 ratio with 35 feet of length. Not easy but hard to not thing the pros would kill it like the cheetah

The potential new patterns are being designed by kegel. aat least that is what we were told by the usbc collegiate ataff. They have "the boardwalk" (cheetah) and "highway to helll" (scorpion" were what we bowled on, and what the patterns were similar to

I screwed my leg up on that pattern.
I won a tournament for a spot in a local PBA tournament.
went in over the weekend to practice, and a B-Day party had been there before
me. Went to bowl, and rip went my hamstring.
So I don't like that pattern.

New patterns would be nice but there needs to be more variety to them. The patterns seem to be to similar. Don't get me wrong, I like watching Walter Ray but when a guy can play the same 5 board area on 3 or 4 different patterns then there is not enough difference between the patterns.

I would be up for a donkey pattern. Can you tame the donkey? If you don't find the right groove on this pattern you could get stung by the donkey.

Actaul seriousness here. I think there is a need for some tweeking on the old patterns and they should add a few. What I want to see for the tour is alternating patterns. During the week do something like Cheetah and Shark every 3 pairs. That is fun. I had something like that in a local tour here. It was interesting because both patterns break down to a common cluster f***.

What they could do is like rotate one in for a while and see how it goes and then rotate one out and then keep doing it like that. But yeah, probably some variety would be nice.

Well I disagree with different patterns for different pairs. Thats dumb. Pick a pattern for the tournament and stick with it. But they definately need some more variety.
