PBA Match Play Breakdown
« on: April 13, 2004, 02:05:17 AM »
Check out the statistics for the last season - they can be found here:
http://www.pba.com/news/default.asp?ID=2490

Here's a couple of interesting factoids out of the article:

Match Play Average
(Rank, Name, Avg.)

1. Chris Barnes, 233.50
2. Walter Ray Williams Jr., 233.33
3. Mika Koivuniemi, 233.29
4. Mike Scroggins, 229.50
5. Jason Couch, 228.23
6. Patrick Allen, 227.45
7. Steve Jaros, 227.09
8. Ryan Shafer, 226.83
9. Brad Angelo, 225.47
10. Michael Haugen Jr., 224.99
11. Lonnie Waliczek, 224.47
12. Pete Weber, 223.26
13. Robert Smith, 223.04
14. Tommy Delutz Jr., 222.96
15. Rick Steelsmith, 222.60
16. Tim Criss, 221.70
17. Tommy Jones, 220.88
18. Tony Reyes, 220.62
19. Steve Wilson, 220.54
20. Joe Ciccone, 219.26
21. Bob Learn Jr., 219.17
22. Doug Kent , 218.95
23. Wes Malott, 218.71
24. Amleto Monacelli, 212.30

Interesting, isn't it - that the top three are probably 5-10 sticks apart ON THE SEASON!

Second factoid - this one's amazing:

Match Play Single Pin Conversion Pct.
(Rank, Name, Conversions, Attempts, Pct.)
1. Walter Ray Williams Jr., 336-337, 99.70
2. Tommy Delutz Jr., 276-279, 98.93
3. Ryan Shafer, 281-285, 98.60
4. Patrick Allen, 309-314, 98.41
5. Rick Steelsmith, 244-248, 98.39
6. Lonnie Waliczek, 281-286, 98.25
7. Mika Koivuniemi, 387-394 , 98.22
8. Bob Learn Jr., 208-212, 98.11
9. Steve Jaros, 341-349, 97.71
10. Doug Kent , 337-345, 97.68
11. Pete Weber, 373-384, 97.14
12. Michael Haugen Jr., 287-296, 96.96
13. Mike Scroggins, 327-338, 96.75
14. Brad Angelo, 419-434, 96.54
15. Chris Barnes, 276-286, 96.50
16. Amleto Monacelli, 231-240, 96.25
17. Tim Criss, 193-201, 96.02
18. Joe Ciccone, 190-198, 95.96
19. Tony Reyes, 237-248, 95.57
20. Tommy Jones, 270-283, 95.41
21. Jason Couch, 247-260, 95.00
22. Steve Wilson, 194-205, 94.63
23. Wes Malott, 143-152, 94.08
24. Robert Smith, 210-224, 93.75

WRW missed ONE single pin in all of match play for the WHOLE season. Astounding. The "worst" that made the list was at almost 94%!
Geez...
And I thought 3 games with one open was good.

23. Tommy Jones, 385-518, 74.32
24. Wes Malott, 195-264, 73.86

That one open in a three-game set is still looking pretty good when you consider that the best in the game are shooting at least 10-12 non-strike leaves per three games and that (counting splits) would be expected to have at least one or two holes in those three games.

Just a reminder why those stats can be skewed.  IF the game is loss easily, they will throw a strike shot on a spare to try and open a hair more room, so some of those guys missed less then they really did.  Walter missing 1 the whole year is just ungodly though, I Wonder if the world stopped and the audience gasped when he missed that pin and what was it? Hmmmm

A flash camera going off in his face?

The spare conversion rates are amazing.  It really shows the difference between the top pros and the league bowlers like me.

Sorry - I had tried to post the whole article, but the server wouldn't let me - it said there was an "HTML overflow"...

Fascinating stats, though!

I think he missed that spare against me the first week in Omaha. He missed 2 spares the first game against me. Maybe I scared him. LOL.  CJ

Hey C J you tell us that you really like Storm's new Depth Charge. How does it compare to the Super Charge. Same core as near as I can see. #2 son has 2 of the super charge's drilled & was thinking about a Depth Charge.  What's your take on these 2 ball?
