Full 08-09 season details now up
« on: August 05, 2008, 12:01:55 AM »
Figured I'd start a new thread for this since we now have the official information posted on the PBA's website

http://www.pba.com/news/feature.asp?ID=841

The mixed oil pattern tournaments, a "marathon" tournament, plastic ball tournament, house shot tournament, mixed doubles, and a televised senior event are all confirmed.  I actually think this season should be a lot of fun.  Really looking forward to it!

Why would they make a tournament count for an exemption and a PBA title but not points? At first I thought the plastic ball tournament was an interesting idea but if your only going to make the tournament a step above the "Skills Challenge Contest" then it's a waste of everyone's time. There will be players wanting to be exempt and need points and also if a player feels they don't need to show up because they already have enough points or already exempt from winning a previous title then what's the point of the tournament? Nice idea but flawed.

I think these changes are great. I thought the whole "named patterns" thing was becoming pretty stale and these new ideas - however gimmicky they may seem - show some creativity and are a breath of fresh air as far as I'm concerned.

Sure, I would have watched the tournament TV finals regardless, but now I will pay much greater attention during the week on these new "gimmicky" tournaments to see what havoc they are wreaking.

I'm already looking forward more to the plastic tournament than any other stop. The only thing I don't like about it is that Ebonite is the only manufacturer providing balls. It'd be interesting to see bowlers throwing all different brands of plastic. I would still keep the other rules the same - only two balls per bowler in the tournament, and all balls must stay on the premises, etc.

Wow an all plastic ball tournament?  That is pretty sweet.  I was kind of against the two pattern shots as a gut reaction but I think it will be interesting if not gimmicky.

Oh wasn't viewership up last year?  I wonder why mess with the formula?

Why won't Kulick and Johnson be involved for the ladies series?

I can't wait for this season to get going.  The formats look awesome!!  The new events will be good viewing.  The womens events should even be interesting even though Kulick and Liz Johnson won't be involved.

should be an interesting season. named pattern tournaments, major patterns, plastic, special patterns for Weber and Earl tournaments. Hopefully the THS pattern doesnt generate negative feelings about pros vs. casual bowlers (insert league bowler comment here) but show just how tough these patterns can play and how good these guys are. I look forward to the plastic tournament as well, I have always been interested in a league with plastic equipment only, this tournament could be the start who knows.

if the lanes are dry, or outsides are dry from 20 or 15 right, plastic is my best friend for league

They didn't make the exemption cut.

For those of you that think that more than 40 guys will take the Plastic Tournament off...i'd like to take that bet !!! Reason being is there is a limit on how many exempt players are allowed to take a certain week off...at that point it is who asks for the week off first. I believe the limit is 6 ( it could be as low as 4, not real sure ).

Also, everybody is making WAY too much fuss over the Plastic Ball tournament. Its a non-points event and is not that big of an issue. Its just another event, everybody is on a level playing field and i'm sure everybody will be trying to win just like everything else.

I think the main event for the season is Indianapolis....the Marathon event is going to be very interesting. Bowling on 6 different patterns to make the show should be cool.

The only problems i see with the new formats are logistical...amount of equipment in pits with multiple patterns, amount of time to dress the lanes with multiple patterns, etc....

Should be an interesting season to say the least

I really like how the PBA is changing the format this season.  I really like the idea of a plastic ball tourney.  I think that will be a lot of fun to watch.

I think Duke and WRW will dominate this season.

I'm sure Gene Kanak will chime in, but when he ran his plastic tournament in Kankakee, Il. on a 38 foot flat shot it was the most challenging tournament I've bowled in a long time and also the most fun I've had as well. So I think it's a good idea in my opinion, but your right, it should count for points.

The winners share of $25k for the normal events is sad, but it's nice to see the US Open back up to $100K for winning.
