PBA league thoughts?
« on: April 07, 2013, 11:33:59 PM »
First off I want to say that I loved watching it. I loved the team aspect and I really enjoyed getting to see bowlers that aren't making it to tv every week.

Will they re-draft before next year? The way Rash talked it seemed that teams would remain the same.

Is there anything you would do to change it?

I wouldn't screw the singles telecast in favor of a team concept.  With all the down time between now and the summer swing I'm really not sure why they didn't do separate telecasts...

While I also do not want to dump singles and step ladder finals for an all team set of shows, I have learned to enjoy the team television shows. I think it's because I have some favorites and some bowlers I don't care for.

A couple of things that got my attention in this:
- why did WRW always seem to throw the ball so slowly, relatively speaking?
- why did Duke always seem to play the outside line, when some other changed from time to time as patterns changed? Yes, he has had a lot of success doing that, but he is also known for his adaptability.
- What happened to Tommy Jones in this last show? I was shocked.
- Shame about Rhino's wrist. Sad to see him bowling while, he was supposedly in so much pain. This shows "macho" isn't dead and doesn't just apply to use amateurs. He could have done very serious and permanent damage to his wrist.
- I was surprised at how some great bowlers did so badly in this team concept (Admittedly, many rarely bowl team any more. Duke and Jones.) and some not so great bowled very well through out (Jurek). Weber, Scroggins and Barnes again were dead on throughout the competition.
- I think Ciminelli executed great and couldn't seem to carry. Wonder if its seemingly too high speed?

Tj bowls in the weber cup every year and crushes the team concept.

Ciminelis ball rolls weird to me. Just doesnt seem to make a great move to the pocket to me.

I have grown to like weber over the last few years and how he embraced the team concept made me like him even more. Admittedly i was rooting for the WTT kingpins from the get go. Always loved tommy and jack. Have been rooting for Scott Norton all year.

Was this the first show that Billie Jean King showed up for?  I did not see all the shows but on a couple of the ones I did, she was absent.

I absolutely loved it and would rather see a twelve team league with divisions compete instead of the singles tournaments.  Only singles I want to see are the majors.  More bowling styles in a show, you wonder what the leadoff man tells his team that he is seeing out there, the team camraderie, just makes for a better viewing experience.  To string seven strikes in a row in the Baker format is incredible.  This is how the PBA will survive, not the WSOB and all that crap.  This is exciting and exciting draws viewers which in turn draws sponsors.

I also gained some respect for TO and how much he embraced all of this.

I think there is room for both Singles and Team in the PBA. I think what the PBA has to do is separate them though. Show a singles show one week, then a team show the next week, and so on. This will spread out the season on TV and would allow everyone to get what they want within a 2 week window. If the PBA sees a dramatic difference in ratings between the shows, it can then move to showing more of whatever is drawing more viewers and less of what is not. I personally like what I saw of the team bowling this year. You saw some of the pro's embrace it, like PDW and some not so much. A good dynamic and a good way to get something on TV that more casual fans are used to in their league bowling.

I remember a time in the mid 90s where there was a singles competition (PBA, LPBT/PWBA), and there was a televised bowling circuit that was doubles based. Patrick Allen and his partner were on there quite a lot (Mark something.. can't remember his last name). I want to say that Prime Sports covered it at that time.. Pat Healey, Jr. was on there quite a lot as well. I can't remember if it was on during the PBA season, or if it was off-season, but something like that would work as well. The Team Shoot-out thing they did over the summer just really didn't work well, IMHO, but having something team or doubles based during the season as well may be a good idea.. perhaps keeping it open to PBA non-title holders and under?

That is a good idea, Jorge.  I am curious, what bowlers do you think didn't embrace it?  WRW?  That cat doesn't embrace anything.  That's the only one I can think of.

I like singles.....

LoL!!  So many places where we can go with that...

I agree with Jorge, that there is room for both.  I don't know about the every other week switch off though... I'd say have a single season then the team season or vice versa.

Monster,
That is a good idea as well. It might be possible to do a "season" of singles tournaments and then a "season" of team events. That might work out even better as you can have the WSOB and the few live tournaments up front, then do a taping of the team tournaments at a second location at one point and have the shows ready to run. Then do a Live finals of the team event so no one knows who wins. The alternating weeks idea was just a thought to showcase both types of bowling throughout the season.

LGD, I can't say for sure on anyone. But yes, WRW, Duke, and a few others didn't seem as into it as say PDW. It just may be there personalities didn't shine through in what we saw. Both of those players personalities are not usually "on" from the first ball. Duke gets fired up as the game(s) get going, same with WRW. Guys like PDW are "on" the minute they step into the center, so it comes across more when they only have 2 frames on the lanes.

I agree I would like to see more regional players particitpate as well. Maybe get the high point winner in each region automatically on a team....or top 2 if needed to fill out all the teams. I would also like to see a rule where the teams should have to change out players after each game. For example, you have a roster of 7-8 players, and every game can only have 3 of the same players from the games before. That way everyone gets involved, and it throws some strategy into the mix....maybe you sit one of your better players the first game so you have them available for the title match, etc. Just ideas to help expand on the team concept which seems to be a winner for the PBA at the moment, yours may differ and may be better, lol.

The so-called PBA league was a Joke (with a capital J). How is it a league? This is yet another weak marketing attempt by the PBA. Hey -- they sell your favorite PBA league t-shirts... like they're real teams in the NHL or NFL. How hilarious! What's next? Collectible trading cards? They have tried to tap into the "owners" followers on social media to try and help the failing PBA. $8,000 for a PBA title. The Summer Series is a total FAIL. What year would you have to go back to, in order to find an $8,000 winner's check? The 1960's?? Getting back to the PBA marketing efforts... here is the current line-up of sponsors: BRUNSWICK and USBC (both of which are industry and are no-brainers -- how much effort did it take to sign them up?). That leaves BARBASOL, JACK LINKS and GEICO. The entire PBA Marketing Dept. needs a raise. Yup. Good work! Tom Clark doesn't mention these issues. Keep cashing those pay checks Tom, right until you bail before the PBA bottom falls out.
