Title: The Best PBA Match You have ever seen is...
Post by: bradl on January 14, 2014, 05:00:52 PM

Apologies if there has been a couple hundred threads on this before (no doubt there have been).

What match throughout the history of the PBA, or in your life, have you seen that ranks as the best match you've seen on the PBA? I'll start, and throw in some clips as well.

I have a few in mind, from both recent and classic times:

Barnes v. Kulick.
Weber v. Fagan.
Jurek v. Fagan.
Learn Jr. v. Couch.
Anthony v. Roth.

All of those are great, and great in their own right.. But personally, I consider the best PBA match ever to be..

Mike Aulby v. David Ozio, 1993 Wichita Open.

Entire Telecast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKzyLO0p3hw)

Final Match (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_6kHvv2k5o)

This one also shows a Mr. Kirk von Krueger in the finals as well, but also shows the great prim/proper colour commentary by Schenkel, as well as Burton's play-by-play. I'd call them the best commentating pair modern sport has ever seen. I honestly would.

Anyway, what is the best match you've seen, and why? If available, post clips as well.

BL.

Duke Vs Goebel, WRW Vs Mazza, Ernie Vs Peterson, finals of the Dick Weber Classic with Firpo, Learn, Bohn and Mazza.. The list goes on!

Fagan vs Weber for US Open

Honorable Mention: Duke vs Traber, forget what it was for.

Thanks for sharing that - great match.  Love how Ozio was hoping over the ball return and how much emotion Aulby was showing.

It was at the live telecast when Kelly Kullick beat Chris Barnes, that was quite awesome to see in person and how she climbed the ladder through the week.

Being a big fan of Mike Aulby I'd agree with the Aulby vs Ozio 300-279 title match being one of the great matches of all time and personal favorite. Though I'd have to rank his 237-232 victory over Bob Spaulding in the 95' Brunswick World Tournament of Champions completing the Triple Crown as best PBA match ever. His 96' TPC victory over Parker Bohn III was another great one. Pressure never seemed to bother the man.

No love for Learn vs Weber when Learn and everyone and their mom's were throwing the AMF RPM.

Or Couch v Oatmen. Probably not technically the best match bowling wise but I remember PBA ratings were up tremendously from that match/telecast. Quite entertaining nevertheless with Oatmen being Oatmen, lol.

Gotta love the "Who do you think you are? I AM!" match. Best in the last few years for sure. It was for a US Open title, and both bowlers brought it that game. I'm a fan of Fagan and Weber both, so I was watching this one intently. PDW was eerily focused up until he clinched with that famous line, from what I remember anyway.

Chris Barnes vs Brad Angelo(THAT ONE WASN'T BROOKLYN!) ;D was one of my favorites to watch. That and anytime Belmo vs Rash comes into play. I love to hear the bickering trash talking matches to see who keep their composure.

I enjoyed the Bob Learn vs Petraglia/Bohn/Pederson telecast..highest scoring ever. It was video game level scoring, but still so intense-the first non strike lost the match. I liked the Robert Smith/Norm Duke match for the US Open title back in 2000 I think. Robert Smith out Duked Duke, playing the channel and won. I don't remember the opponents, but Earl Anthony's last TV appearance with his first retirement (1990ish?) has always stuck with me-his last 3 shots even made the local sports play of the day!

My favorites would be Weber and Haugen Jr.  289-279 final, with Pete yelling he's not getting his first one against me! lol

One that I'll never forget watching was C.K. Moore shooting 300 on TV.  It was when I first started bowling leagues in 8th grade.  300 was the goal for all of us and seeing that was very cool.

Wayne Webb vs. Pete McCordic. McCordic shot 300 to Webb's 250 something, what was memorable was McCordic shaking like a leaf after the first eight strikes. I thought the poor guy was going to faint on national television!

Here are some of my favorites:

Bob Learn vs Johnny Petraglia in Erie.  That was the day that Bob averaged around 280 over the entire stepladder final.

Norm Duke vs Robert Smith at the US Open.  One of the few times we saw Maximum Bob ever go straight but outbowled Duke on Duke's line.

Robert Smith vs WRWJ.  Those were always fun matches, and who could forget when Maximum Bob shattered the glass when making the 3-6-10 spare.

Michael Haugen Jr. vs Pete Weber.  Can't do much better than a 289-279 and Weber declared that Haugen's first title would not be against him.

Michael Haugen Jr. vs Chris Barnes at the US Open.  It was an epic meltdown by Barnes that allowed Haugen to come back in the last 4-5 frames after Barnes led by almost 60.

Mike Fagan vs Pete Weber at the US Open.  Great bowling by both, and of course the "Who do you think you are?  I am" eruption.

John Mazza vs WRWJ in Reno.  Mazza and WRWJ were in a strikefest during that championship match until WRWJ missed at the end.  Title went to Mazza that day.  It was also fun to see Mazza throwing out to 2-3 with the early reactive balls at the time.

Amleto Monacelli vs Bill O'Neill.  This was a horrible scoring match with Amleto only bowling in the low 140's.  But to see him compete with that arm injury really earned more of my respect.  He's no doubt one of the best international bowlers ever in the PBA.  He showed no quit that day.  O'Neill was great with his sportsmanship as well.

1986 St. Louis Open - Duke vs. Weber.

Weber in his home house, Duke being Duke.  Epic.

1958/9: Billy Golembiewski beating Ray Bluth, 300 - 299, on Bowling for Dollars (I think that was the show's name)

Sometime in the 1980s: Mark Baker beat Dave Ferraro 279 - 278.

Johnny Petraglia's 300 with the Green Quantum.

Don Johnson's 299 in the TOC when he wound up laying on the floor - one of the most dramatic moments on bowling TV.

McCordic/Webb 1987 Greater LA Open (McCordic's 300).  It had been 14 years since Stefanich's 300 and even though the match was over in the 8th frame (Webb put up a solid 249) the atmosphere was crazy.  One of Bo and Chris' best broadcasting jobs.

I wish I could find a video of the '93 US Open where Ballard was playing a fallback with an Ultimate Weapon.  Resin had officially taken over and DB is playing this wonderful fallback from 25 to 18 and just annihilating the pins.

Speaking of which, not the "best" PBA match, but the most obvious example of "hey, something different is going on here".

I was like 13 or 14 when I saw this on ABC, I think. I had stop bowling youth to focus on other sports. I was nervous even though we saw this show a week after it aired lol. I was living overseas.....

Ballard vs. Weber when Ballard threw the gutterball ... then showed up next week and did a Rolaids commercial based around that shot. I was a fan for life.

Jeff Carter beating PDW in the plastic ball tournament.

Probably the most surreal one was the last telecast Dale Traber made, all the wailing going on on the forums because he was a big guy, and then the way it finished -- wasn't that Mike Mineman's title?

Those might not be the "best," but they're some of the most memorable.

Yes it was.  That was the drop it on the gutter show.  I loved that show.  Mineman's first shot on TV pocket 7-10, throws at the 10 pin 15mph and almost makes it with the pin laying right in front of the 7.

I really didn't think he was going to be able to finish the match. I was a porter at our local center, and the whole place stopped bowling and everyone was standing at the bar watching.
