Title: TOC
Post by: Bowlaholic on February 18, 2017, 12:46:41 PM
In the last game of qualifying with Belmo in 5th position to make the TV show, Tom Smallwood put a "beatdown" on Belmo bowling him heads up on the same pair to knock him off the show and put himself from 6th to 4th.  Way to go Smalls! And Radical, too!
The TV finals will be broadcast tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST on ESPN.  Don't forget to watch and support bowling.

Looks like it's Tackett, Jones, Barrett, Smallwood, and Weber. Pretty good representation of the big ball companies.

As usual, LOTS of talent to watch and appreciate Sunday. Different styles, too.  It just goes to show that bowling can be done many ways as long as you can repeat your shots...

Norm made a serious run at the show too.  A lot of people look at him as a one trick pony now, just piping it up the outside.  That was not the case this week - he played a lot of different lines (including inside) depending on what what was working that particular block. And with his versatility, he nearly made the show.

My only gripe with the TOC is that the lefties were completely shut out - not a single one in the top 24.  It's too bad that it never really evens out - its either a lefty dominant or righty dominant tournament depending on the house and pattern.  I would love to see some asymmetrical oil patterns created to try to even the playing field for all.

In another thread I went off on Belmo at the Players Championship:

- I am not a Belmo hater at all but dude did himself no favors at the end of the show...Turning to the crowd and saying "Number 7" = FIGJAM/douche.  Not waiting till Simonsen was done to pick up the trophy - not awesome.  Dude didn't even shake Simonsen's hand after the match (at least not on camera)...just not a great showing of respect towards his opponent or the game in my opinion.

Belmo was nothing but class when Smallwood beat him in the position round/last game of the TOC to knock him off show.  Belmo shook Smallwood's hand and congratulated him afterwards.

Maybe Belmo is a better loser than winner?

He's no better loser than winner. They're all human, not robots. Anyone can catch their favorite celebrity at a very bad time; they can do anything any other person can do when they stressed, annoyed by family, friends, business, or some fan. Do one bad action on ANYONE's part make them evil, nast and a rotten human being forever and ever? No, it makes them human with all the frailties of the species.

If they act that way 3 or 5 times over a periods of months or years, heck, then you may have a case.

Heck, I even found Belmonte to be at fault during the "bottle b*tch" episode, but it appears it was just an incident. He's shown too many other incidents where class has come to the forefront. While I no longer feel antagonistic towards him, he's not my favorite bowler. He's just another bowler, be it with a unique style.

Charlest, my comment was more tongue in cheek than anything else.  I agree with the overarching theme of your comments.

Sorry. My fault.

Did you notice how few spectators were in attendance?

And if you subtract all the bowling industry personnel from the audience, there would be even less actual "fans" in attendance.
I remember how popular bowling was years ago on TV, it was a Saturday afternoon staple.
And actually even as late as ten years ago it would still draw big crowds for majors. Now not so much.  SAD!
