Is it Nelson Burton Jr. that has mentioned a couple of times that the jury is still out on whether to switch to a plastic ball on spares? That jury came back with a plastic verdict a long time ago.

Burton's position was always that you didn't want to mess with the possibly different feel of a completely different ball at that point in time so just use the strike ball. Of course this was back in the days of using 1 or 2 balls the whole week instead of 1 or 2 a game.
