Title: coverstock color changed,why?
Post by: goneal32 on August 15, 2019, 10:57:36 AM
I have a Jackpot pearl. After cleaning the ball, the ball no longer looks like the same ball. I have always cleaned in hot tap water. Ball in sink, fill with hot tap water(140 degrees), a little bit of Dawn detergent, mild scrubbing with a soft nylon bristle brush. I cleaned 5 different balls today and the Jackpot is a very light colored gray, almost white. Ball is clean, feels ok, just totally different color..My concern is whether the change in color will affect ball reaction..Anybody had this happen? :-\

Did you spray the Dawn directly on the ball or add it in the water?

to the water, very small amount, probably the size of a quarter.

I had this happen twice, where the ball had more white phasing after I used a hot water bath.  Did not notice any loss of hook, just loss of colour.

They still had blue showing (balls were supposed to be all blue but were colour blems and had some white showing) but much more white was showing after the bath.

Test the ball out and see if it still reacts the same.

I had the same thing happen to my Motiv Revolt Havoc after running it through the Detox machine. Purple ball with some white phasing. Didn't affect performance at all

It's called Phasing it's were moisture (from cleaning or just out of the air do to temp. changes.) is being absorbed by the balls porous surface and the color gets kind of milky looking.

It won't hurt it, it will still react the same.

It can go away by itself or you can try blowing it with a hair dryer, sometimes sanding removes it or using a strong deep cleaner can remove it, some use a very small amount of acetone on a rag an wipe it.

Or put it on a spinner and use a little alcohol and use a little pressure and generate some heat to warm it.

I've put balls in my dehydrator oil extractor and dried it out.

Mine never went away but I like it that way.  Easier to find on the return.  :)

I had this happen several times, using the same cleaning/oild extraction method (bucket, hot tap water, and a small shot of APC). I found that the phasing reaction happened frequently when I used dish washing detergent - very thoroughly (e.g. a Shock & Awe, originally a bright light blue and salmon pearl, turned into an almost solid grey/dull orange!)! This did never happen when I used general all-purpose cleaners, though, so I became cautious concerning the cleaner I use for the bucket bath.

However, with frequent use and oil absorption the effect will disappear, or you can sand it away if that's part of your ball cleaning/maintenance regimen.

Aloarjr810 nailed it. Phasing happens to any ball from any company on any given day.  There is zero loss of performance, and usually as you use it and oil gets on he cover again, it returns to normal color (or close).

Some phasing shows as white "highlights" for lack of better term, and seems permanent, but just makes the ball look better...

+1 on phasing being normal.  Actually see even simple green and water cause some water mark phasing down the side of a few balls when I leave it on for a full minute.  Goes away once its in the oil usually.

I have a old Hammer 3D Pearl with some hazing on it.  I kind of like it actually.  Still rolls great on these flying backends down here in Florida....LOL!!
