HIGH PERFORMANCE
FEATURES:
- Coverstock: MicroBite Solid Reactive
- Weight Block: Paragon Core (14-16  pounds)
- Ball Color: Blue/Purple/Black  All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown.
- Ball Finish: 3000-grit Abralon
- RG Differential: 16#-.052, 15#-.054,  14#-.053
- RG Average: 16#-2.49, 15#-2.49, 14#-2.52
- Flare Potential:  7" Plus (High)
- Recommended Lane Conditions: Heavy Oil
- A few tiny pit holes in the cover stock of the ball are normal
- Description:  At Roto Grip, we rule the  lanes! And you better have your game in gear if you want the same.  Starting at the center, the “GUTS”, the new Paragon™ core features  contours designed to help expand the RG planes of the ball. This unique  elliptical shape defines predictability of axis migration and allows you  to perfectly match up your ball reaction to the condition at hand.  Strong midlane roll and a HUGE continuous, sweeping hook on the backend!  This is a serious technological advancement.  Moving on to the shell, the “GRIT”, we’ve developed a new MicroBite  coverstock that is stronger and more textured than the competition.  Microtechnology, the use of extremely-small structured additives down to  a millionth of a meter, makes this possible. When finished with  3000-grit Abralon, this new MicroBite shell creates friction where  others just cannot!  And finally, looking at the “GRIME”, the designated oil pattern and lane  condition, the Defiant is sure to handle even the heaviest amounts of  oil. Today’s lane oils have more solids than ever before, making the  lanes very slick at times. With the new Defiant, no more worrying about  heavy oil often found on tournament shots! Roto Grip has you covered.

Likes: The Defiant is one of the strongest balls that I have used today.  It rolls very smooth and allowed me increase speed and play the track area on my local house shot.  I was also able to use this ball at the Cheetah Championship in Fountain Valley, Ca.  It was a little strong to start but was an absolute Killer once the pattern started to carry down.  It gave me smooth transition a strong roll and drove through the pins like a mac truck!  This ball is a must for anyone looking for a smooth rolling ball on heavy oil!

Likes: Where do i start. First, I want to thank roto grip for stepping up their game once again. I absolutely love this ball. I went with the 5*4*3 layout because I have personally seen how strong this ball is on the backend. Well hats off to roto grip!!!!!. The MOTION of this ball actually surprised me far greater than any ball. From where I throw my nano, I am 5 boards left with my feet and actually getting the ball out further and my nano has a stronger layout. .......I should add that I am very consistant at hitting both my mark and my breakpoint. And from that comment i want to add that I noticed on shots which i would pull, that this monster would actually hold itself as if there was no bridge keeping it from jumping over to brooklyn.. I sliped miserably on one shot when i was throwing over the center arrow out to 8 and actually went over 18 and out to 2 and this unheard of specimen called Defiant actually had the nerve to go back to the pocket. Another thing that i have noticed, is this ball doesnt do what normal balls do when the oil starts moving. what i mean is my solid balls such as the cell, VG, and  VG nano immidately start punishing me with splits when my line starts burning up. but the defiant actually started leaving me with 9 pins and as soon as i would notice that 9 fall last i adjusted a normal 2-1 and the ball continues doing its thing.. that is all that i have to say about this ball at the moment, i shall continue this review whenever i get to throw it on some sport patterns within the next few weeks. I think i will add a video as well

Likes:I really like the Backend motion on this new release. When it makes the Turn there is no stopping this ball. I have had the ball for a few weeks and missed an 800 last night by 32 pins. Went 278, 276 then 214 as I failed to move soon enough. I think Roto Grip did a great job on this release... Now maybe a Pearl with this core? ;)

Dislikes: Those pesky nine pins.....Ball is so strong it continues driving through the pit. Not really a dislike though :)

Likes: Pin actions, turn to the pocket.

Dislikes: backend hook.

I picked this ball up a few weeks ago and was expecting a lot.  The ball seems to work great for me on a typical shot, but when I find heavy oil or heavier mid's, it doesn't react like I thought it would.  I wish it would turn the corner faster/harder for me and it's not.  The pin action is good, it does have drive to the pocket and the pins do explode.  I'm averaging probably 220's with it, but it seemed to be harder than easier doing it.

I'll post additional posts in the future after I put additional games on it.

Thanks...

HERE IS MY LATEST DEFIANT REVIEW
DEFIANT #3 – 50 X 5 X 55 PIN ABOVE THE MIDDLE FINGER AND THE MASS IS LEFT OF THE THUMB AND THE CG IS OUT AT TO THE LEFT OF THE CENTER GRIP LINE

INTENDED USE FOR HEAVY OIL SPORT CONDITIONS WITH DRIER BACK END

TEST BALL ON TURNPIKE, DEAD MAN'S CURVE, AND AUTOBAHN AND A THS

FOUND THE BALL TO ROLL QUITE NICE ALL THE WAY DOWN THE LANE, IT WORKED TO MY ADVANTAGE TO HAVE THIS ONE LAYED OUT THIS WAY AND ANOTHER DRILL WITH A LITTLE MORE BACKEND IN IT. I ENJOYED USING THIS BALL ON SOME FRESH HOUSE SHOT WITH A LITTLE GRITTY LANE PANELS AND SUPER SLICK PANELS. THE BALL PATH WAS NICE AND CONSISENT AND NEVER SHOWED SIGNS OF ANY OVER/UNDER REACTIONS. ONE THING I DID FIND AFTER PLAYING THE SAME TRACK AREA ON THE SAME PAIR OF LANES AND TRANSITIONED TO THE POLISHED PIN UP DEFIANT I HAVE AND CONTINUED TO PLAY THE SAME AREA

MY LATEST DEFIANT REVIEW

 DEFIANT #4 – 50 X 3 3/16 X 70 PIN DOWN AND P3 HOLE AT 2000Ab

INTENDED TO REPLACE A THEORY I HAD TO REPLACE A MUTANT CELL I HAD OVER 300 GAMES ON IT

TESTED ON 4 DIFFERENT HOUSE PATTERNS WITH WOOD, HPL, SPL, AND PRO-ANVIL

USED MAINLY ON HPL AND SPL FOR HOUSE PATTERNS ONLY. MY CURRENT BENCHMARK BALL. I FOUND THIS BALL BE HAVE THE MOST EVEN AND CONSTANT ROLL AND HOOK I SEEN IN AWHILE WITH A PIN UNDER DRILLING. ITS STRONG ENOUGH NOT TO BURN OUT IN THE FRONT PART OF THE LANE. I START WITH THIS BALL AT 3 OF THE 4 CENTERS I BOWL AT ON A WEEKLY BASIS. I SWITCH THEN TO A PIN UP, AND THEN TO A PIN UP POLISHED VERSION OF THE DEFIANT.

THIS IS MY 4 DEFIANT I HAD DRILLED AND ALL OF THEM ARE WORKING TO THEIR INTENDED USE. MOST VERSTILE BALL I FOUND SINCE THE ORGINIAL CELL.

BALL REACTION

I am doing this review on two Defiants.

The first Defiant I drilled is the 4 1/2 layout.

I chose this layout as it is one of my favorites, putting the pin in the ring finger. The Defiant is a very strong, high end bowling ball, and it shows. With this layout, I can see the early reading motion, with a strong, yet controllable back end motion. The only thing, since this is a stonger layout for me, is that the ball had a tendency to use its energy to early and hit a little weak. After applying Storm Step 2 to the surface, I can get the ball to clear the mids and store more energy. Instead of putting the ball away after a game and half in league, it now can survive the whole set hitting hard. The ball definitely needs oil, especially in the heads and mids. If where you are bowling at is lacking oil early, shine the ball to get it to retain energy.

The second Defiant I drilled was designed to clear the mids, and not have the issue I saw with the first one. This layout really gets the ball to clear the mids, and makes a real strong, late movement on the lane.  I saw exactly what I was expecting out of this ball. It is unreal to see how much potential this ball has in the back ends.  With how much this ball corners in the back end, I am able to play a different part of the lane and stay away from others in the track area. This Defiant is easily 3-4 boards stronger than the first one, since it stores its energy much longer. I do not see the loss of energy that I did with the first Defiant, and will not be shining this one unless needed to for tournament needs.

With how strong of a ball this is, I recommend drilling this ball to store energy, as some house shots do not have enough oil for this ball. Do not be afraid to alter surface either, changing surfaces on bowling balls can make a huge difference on a ball, whether it is hooking too much or not enough.

COMMENTS

Likes: Great ball, strongest ball out there. Great for lots of oil.

Dislikes: None, tweak the surface if needed.

I purchased this ball (suggested by Pete Somoff) to handle "thick and slick" conditions - this ball does not disappoint!  It has a nice arcing motion, yet is fairly forgiving.

COMMENTS

Likes: Really holds the lane and cuts through the oil extremely well.  Great on fresh oil, especially if it's "thick" in the middle.  It handles "long" patterns well.

Dislikes: This ball DEMANDS OIL! "Short" patterns and dry/burned-out conditions will force you to put the ball back in the bag - the cover is that aggressive!

SUMMARY
If you need a ball that will hold the lane, yet still retain hitting energy with minimal "over/under" at the breakpoint, this ball should fit the bill.

My Axis is 5 5/8 right, ¼ up, my speed is average and I would consider myself with higher revs but more up the back. So not a cranker but not really straight either.

Left this one dull – Pin 5x5 above ring finger, MB right of thumb.

With this drill pattern the ball rolls very strong at mid lane. On oily conditions it is AMAZING. It reads the mid lane and does not skid through the break point and it hooks all the way through the pins. On some drier conditions it will slow down on the back ends but then I just moved deeper. I was able to keep my speed up and have a ton of hook with this ball. The design of the weight block allows the ball to recover itself on my errand shots. This is a must have ball for oil and if it’s not oily enough it shines very well. See my review of the Defiant #2.

Shined 4x5 – Pin below ring finger.

After using a dull one I had to drill another and shine it. OMG, this ball shined is out of this world! I put the pin below the finger so that the ball would not squirt past its break point. This ball is very good through the fronts and very angular in the back ends, which made my carry go way up. The day I drilled it I bowled 857 in league and physically did not throw it great, but it made my bad shots even look really good. My biggest love of this ball is how it makes up for human error so much better than any other ball I have. This ball is super bowler friendly for those who aren’t perfect every shot.

COMMENTS

Likes: First, would like to thank Mike Sinek with Roto Grip for helping get this ball. Based on my ball speed, and the fact we began the Shark pattern, my driller and I decided to go stronger with the drilling on this ball. WIth my speed, I don't usually have an issue getting the ball down the lane, especially on Shark. The Defiant has a much different shape and is overall stronger then a Nexus (P+F) drilled similar. I found this to be the strongest ball I have thrown. It's has a good read in the mid-lane (hence the 3/10 on length, the ball reads the mids very well), and allowed me to attack the Shark pattern from an inside line, something I have had difficulty in doing prior. And even with the mid-lane read, the ball doesn't lose energy in the back part of the lane. It continues through the pins and allows good carry even from the inside angles of Shark. Overall I am very pleased with this ball, and it is the first ball out of my bag on Shark, and will continue to be on any longer, heavier pattern. If you are looking for a strong, controllable ball with a nice arcing move, this is the ball to get. I have yet you see it where it drastically over-reacts coming out of the oil.

Dislikes: The only dislike I have is that the cover seems to get an oil shine to it very quickly. But with proper cleaning and maintenance, it hasn't been a huge issue.

LANE CONDITION

Length:  43 ft on AMF HPL

Volume:  Heavy

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc):  THS

COMMENTS

Likes:  Predictability, pin carry, ball motion

Dislikes:  None

Where do I start than other to say this has to be one of the best heavy oil balls that I have had a chance to throw.  Stats: 19-22mph, 380-420 revs, low track.  Bought with a 3" pin to CG distance, I used a pin down, 3-1/2 x 5 x 3 layout  to accomodate my speed and also give me flexibility on a wider amount of conditions.   I also wanted to have the ball pick up the midlane earlier.  This layout was the jackpot for me.

In the house I bowl at, we use a heavy 43' house shot and typically have clean backends.  Using my A game of playing outside, this ball is a perfect match.  If I threw a little too far out, the cover is strong enough to make the turn and come back.  If I pulled a shot, the ball is forgiving and held in the oil without overreacting.  I was absolutely locked in and was not missing the pocket.  Carry is excellent where pins stay low and had virtually no deflection.

When I moved inside, I found that the Defiant is just as predictable.  Slowing my speed down a little bit, I found that the Defiant worked equally great.  If I went slightly wide, the ball still made the turn and could hit the swish zone without any issue.  If I cut my swing short, the ball would hold without overreacting.  Again, I found the carry to be excellent and virtually no deflection.

Now, this ball does need oil.  Once the lanes transition and the Defiant hits the dry, it will definitely hook a ton.  No questions asked on that.  With the transition, be prepared to move deep, or go down to something weaker if you want to keep a similar line.

Compared to my Virtual Gravity Nano, I found the Defiant to be as strong or slightly stronger.  The 3000 grit MicroBite cover and Paragon core are a great match, and fit my game better.  The Nano with its 4000 grit NRG cover is good, but was hit or miss at box finish.  Sanding the Nano to 2000 grit and redrilling to the same layout I used on the Defiant helped me be more successful.

I also like the predictability this ball offers.  While the Nano tends to go a little longer and be more angular in the back, the Defiant will pick up the mids a little earlier and give a consistent hard arcing layout.  I also found that it stores energy better.  It reminds me a lot of the original Cell, but stronger.

This ball has to be one of the best that Roto Grip has ever produced.  The cover/core are a perfect match for each other.  It fits a wide variety of styles and is versatile with surface changes and layouts.

Bottom line- if you have a Nano but want something more predictable and forgiving, the Defiant is the answer.  If you have never thrown Roto Grip before, and need a heavy oil ball, this ball should be on the short list for your arsenal.  You will not be sorry that you bought one.

COMMENTS

I don't want to sound cliche but will say this ball is quite strong.  It has a lot of backend motion for a heavy oil ball.  I like to compare it with the Critical Theory since I was very impressed with the hook potential on that ball.  The Defiant is several boards stronger but with a different shape ball reaction.  While the Critical offered good length, good midlane read, and a very defined transition from hook to roll, while producing a heavy roll...the Defiant offers relatively good length, a better midlane read, and a smoother transition from hook to roll, while also producing a heavy roll with very good continuation.

The ball is more at home in longer or heavier patterns, as you can imagine, but if you have lower revs or higher speeds, you will get more mileage on medium conditions.

I am a lefty power stroker and was able to just keep moving deeper and the ball continued to drive hard into the pocket.  I finally got as deep as 24 to 8 on the longer 42ft pattern and finally left a 7 pin.  Normally I don't have to get that deep, but was testing it out.

Our stroker tested the ball on 38 ft THS and Viper, but would also rather throw the ball on heavier or longer patterns.

Likes:The new Defiant has lived up to all early reviews on the left & right side. As a Senior Lefty Stroker I found the ball is super both dull & shined...My dull ball has a 3 inch pin below ring finger & CG is kicked out 1 inch. My polished ball has the pin 1 inch left of ring finger..On house shot the shine gets the ball out & down lane on the dry with a strong back end. 3 700's in 1st 3 weeks of use. In a local Senior 9 game tournament changing lanes each game I used the dull box surface. I was able to stay in the oil & go straight up 12-13 and the ball went long with a smooth back end to the pocket & 10 in the pit, as a 290-2310 total for the win can attest. All other lefties were out in the dry & left lots of 7 pins...Larry Hoffman, RG Advisory Staff..
