It has been quite rewarding also. I don't think I've shot anything under 700 on league nights since I started throwing it. Lately the lanes have been pretty oily and I probably could have been throwing something stronger but I love the way it reads the lane, so I just play more outside and up the track. I managed to shoot 300 the last game of a league set the day I drilled the ball. Definitely a must have if your a Roto fan or are looking for a new medium oil ball.

The Horizon is the newest ball in the RS line that replaces the RS-1. Although I was originally sad to see the “1†replaced, after toying around with this ball, I see I got more than I expected in return.
First, let me say I was wrong in an earlier posting in the forum about the overall super smooth look with this ball. The initial ball I threw was labeled with a pin less than an inch out. With the two subsequent 3.5†pin out balls I drilled, I see a different move on the backend of the lane. I will detail that below.
Ball #1 – Label drill, pin less than 1 inch out. Drilled strong at 4-1/2â€
This was a test ball from Hank during my visit to Utah. The ball was VERY smooth overall and allowed me to play straighter than I really thought I could for a 4-1/2†pin to PAP distance. Bowling on the USBC National pattern I had a great look out and it was incredibly smooth off the spot. On THS, this ball gave me the same look until a little carrydown developed. I softened up the speed and didn’t have to worry about it blowing up if it hit the dry early – it gave me a nice, easy to make 4-pin instead of a designer split.
Ball #2 – Pin 5-1/4†from PAP (in the bridge), 45 degree layout with large hole at 5â€
I was trying to replace my trusty RS-1 with this ball in a similar layout and I got exactly as I wished for, and more. Surprisingly, after seeing ball #1 roll, I was actually expecting a little smoother move off the spot than this one gives. However, if the ball were any smoother I think the hit would be bad, or better said, would be conditional unless you have built-in backend in the pattern. I was able to use this ball on the Scorpion pattern at a tournament this weekend both playing in on the fall-back and out in the OB and got the look I needed to keep me in control of the move after the breakpoint. I have no doubt this layout will get the most play of the three Horizon's I have.
Ball #3 – Pin 5-3/4†from PAP, above bridge, no hole in 75 degree layout.
I was looking for a ball to go straighter through the front than my Oracle Vision in the same layout (OV has dropped balance hole). While I have the same shape on the lane as the OV, the move is significantly sharper than the other Horizon’s in my bag. I have to admit I was surprised by how many boards this one covers on the back vs. ball #2 that is really not that significantly different in layout. As much as I thought the construction of this ball wouldn’t allow me to open up the lane, this particular ball does exactly that. In this layout, it reminds me of the move I saw out of the Apocalypse in the two I tried (Note, specifically in this layout only).
Overall: The Horizon is a nice replacement for the RS-1. Although I haven’t tried yet to alter the surface, I think that this ball will do everything you’ve asked of the RS-1 and give you a little more predictability with an earlier overall read of the lane. Typically when you get pin-in balls you feel jipped that you can’t do much with them. On the contrary, I think that is a nice layout for this ball as it enhances the even roll with such a low RG ball. If you get a pin-in, try a label layout in your favorite pin distance and have fun tricking up the ball at the release and watching it NOT overhook on you.

A. Roto Grip Horizon
The Horizon is another mid-line monster from Roto Grip. The polished pearl reactive gives a smooth transition through the front end and solid read at the midlanes. Unlike other pearls instead of hard transition off the break there is a more noticeable arc. Great asset to your arsenal, as the ball is more favorable in when lanes become inconsistent.

pin is 5 1/4 off PAP over middle finger.. cg is just below midline no hole
threw it fresh off the press on a 35 foot house pattern with no grease outside of 7..
what i really liked was the continuous motion off of the extreme friction to the right. If I really strapped on a shot it didn't over react off the burn. The amount of energy it conserved was unparalled to anything in my bag except for my RSX. Which compliments this sphere perfectly.
RotoGrip is putting out some very treat bowling balls these days. Thats three Rotos in my bag now.

What a great ball. A skid/snap ball, but like your normal skid/snap ball. It has a very predictable snap. Devastating hitting power. So far, the games I have thrown, if I am close to the pocket, the pins are gone. High-flush may be a 4 or a 9, but dead flush, all 10 in the pit, light flush, the pins fly. I was goofing around with a couple of my buddies last week, and started with the front 17, and ended with 33 out of 36 strikes. I like this ball so well; I ordered another one for myself, as well as one for my wife. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended.

With this layout the ball easily moved through the midlane almost like a pearl ball with some surface. The ball motion: this ball revs up with total ease...keep in mind on a THS. Carry: Great carry! The Horizon seems to mix the pins and keeps them low which in my mind increases the carrying percentange.
Overall:
Very smooth, strong, powerful ball reaction. This ball has made it into the bag.

First let me say I have not bowled below 670 with this ball.
lane condition ths med volume 36' buffed to 40' brunswick anvilane.
The ball clears the heads nicely and starts up in the mid lane a bit earlier than expected for a pearl but saves enegry while doing so then transitions on the back end for hard arcing powerful move THIS BALL HUNTS THE POCKET! That being said the Horizon is also a very versitle and responsive to hand,speed,line adjustments. It can be played 12 to 5 and back, up the middle in the puddle, or swung from the outside with booming back ends, and creates tremendous pin action keeping the pins low still sending the messengers flying. Roto Grip really did thier home work on this one Thanks Guys!

I put the pin just above left of the center of my span, the cg is down to the right, the ball only had a 1.5" pin and 2.42 top weight. After talking with Tyler Jensen, my Roto Sales Dude, we went with this layout. So about 4 5/8 by 4 1/2 from PAP.
Moving the pin down in your grip makes the ball change direction slower when it hooks. I wanted a ball that is clean through the front on lighter oil/wood, but won't go super long and left turn Clyde. Some PBA patterns require you to play a smaller portion of the lane and with my soft ball speed, I don't want the ball to snap.
This ball is really nice. Clean through the front, works well the less boards that I have to cover going to the right off my hand. Seems to break in the right spot when playing tight third arrow shot, like it has extra hold. Hits really good. Have sold 4-5 of these, and with more normal layouts, very nice. Pretty versatile ball, good for different styles of bowler and a few different lane conditions.

I found both of the Horizons to be not quite as strong on the back ends as the RS-X. Although the Horizon is a low rg, high flare ball, I think the RS-X is a better choice for heavier oil conditions. The Horizon should play better on medium oil patterns.

Surprisingly strong in the midlane for a pearl (albeit a stronger pearl), this ball reminds me VERY much of my Silver Streak Pearl (which I had to get rid of because I dropped to 15#, would LOVE to find another one in 15#...) in that it's not very squirty for a pearl but still gets good length. I believe this is a result of my layout and the base grit of the ball before the polish. Regardless, this ball still gets better length than my high pin 4000 grit Black Widow, a little less midlane, and a little stronger in the backend. This ball can't be categorized as a skid/flip, it's definitely more skid/HARD roll, which is an OUTSTANDING reaction to have on the appropriate conditions.
The best comparison I can offer for this is that it's a poor man's Inferno, the numbers are different and the cover is different and the core is different, etc., but reaction wise and versatility wise, the closest I can compare this to is the original Inferno.
I've also found that this ball just absolutely kills a drier house shot, the layout and surface prep are perfect for the drier backends, and the pearl cover helps the ball scoot through the mostly fried heads. Also, shorter oil is another pattern that this ball absolutely kills on, it's a strong, yet VERY controllable reaction on most conditions short of medium-heavy oil.

Lower rev players will love the angle off the spot from this ball. The Tweeners will love having a pearl that doesn't sail through the breakpoint when thrown a bit harder. Power players will love getting inside of everyone with this ball and having a devastating backend without squirtiness from inside.

This great looking pearl ball was drilled 5.5†X 55 degrees with the pin one half inch above the finger bridge and the non-marked mass bias one and one half inches right of the thumb hole. An extra hole was not needed. The cover was left in OOB condition.
The Horizon is very clean thru the heads (even though it revs quickly off the hand) picks up smoothly in the mids and exhibits a strong arc with continuation on the back end. Hit and carry are very good. A great goto piece when solids and more aggressive balls are going early or inconsistently and/or not making it around the corner.
Compared to the RS-1 (the ball it replaced in the mid performance line), the Horizon does not squirt, reads the mids a little sooner and is not as angular on the back end. With the Horizon, you’re getting a high performance ball for a mid performance price.

On this pattern the ball gave a great read and had a nice angular motion when reaching the dry part of the lane. As the heads broke down and the oil carried down the ball started up a little earlier but kept the same overall hook. I was able to play a more direct line throughout the day and be almost unaffected by the oil transition.
THS is Wood lanes and AMF synthetic both conditions are med oil for our areas THS
On wood this ball gives a strong angular backend with consistent read. Synthetics with a little more oil seemed to caused this ball to have a stronger reaction than on wood the ball had a similar reaction on the synthetic lane but working a deeper line by approx. 5 boards.

Overall Thoughts
This ball is great for use on med to short oil pattern and has great readability and control. Ball has great traction and carry. I have tried a few different surfaces and it has been responsive to the changes. This is the best and most versatile ROTO ball that I have drilled so far and would be a good starting point for a bowler building an arsenal. Can’t wait to see what the soild version does.
I can’t really compare to other equipment as I just re-built my arsenal and have never thrown anything with a layout like this before.

well wow nice may sound strange but ball in smooth of the spot but has a angular move very clean threw the front very impressed with ball kills on med oil patterns
i have a fare amount of hand but not a lot of tilt and was worried the ball would have to much length but I was wrong ball just motors had the ball two weeks and been asked 3 times what are you throwing that ball rolls great had someone buy one ofter seeing me throw it ball its just good a must have on med going to order a mystic next week (hopefully) can't wait to get that jem to go with this one

I'm updating this review, as I've switched this piece to being first out of my bag.
Ball is drilled 4" pin to PAP, under ring finger. CG 4" (stacked). No weight hole.
I'm a medium revs and ball speed stroker.
I wanted an angular, pearl piece for medium oil. The ball came with a short pin, which was unexpected. I had it drilled for med-high flare, good midlane read, and a sharp breakpoint.
On a fresh THS I back off the axis rotation and send it down the 10 board and it revs quickly, picks up a good roll in the late midlane and drives through the hole. Fantastic carry.
As the oil transitions I move left and stand over the 20, increase my axis rotation and send it between the 2nd and 3rd arrows. The ball flips pretty hard at the break and its usually a solid hit. Off pocket hits have great carry as well. On good hits I sometimes see solid 10's, but almost never 7's.
This ball handles dry heads decently, being pearl/polished, but with the layout I have it still makes the ball finish a bit weaker. Carrydown is worse, this ball needs at least some dry in the back to make a good move.
I love the mid-lane this ball has despite being pearl. Very predictable for an angular reaction. On medium conditions I can throw just this one ball all night and with release changes I can get this ball to do anything except for the huge coast-to-coast swing shots. Great for spares, too.
A solid piece from Roto Grip. I would recommend this ball to just about everybody. My Horizon is quickly becoming my favourite ball.
