Lane Conditions: Medium-Heavy Oil
Typical Conditions: Variety of Shots
Type of Lane: Combination
What part of the lane did you play? Third Arrow
Did the ball track out? Normal
Weight of bowling ball: 15
Surface of bowling ball: Factory/Box
What grit was the surface of the ball? 1500
Likes: It has limitless length. The ball doesn't rip apart the heads. You can play right longer.
Dislikes:

Rotogrip is releasing another benchmark ball. The New Hyper Cell Skid! A ball that gives you the best of both worlds. Extreme length and raw power on the back end. The ball uses the 73 MHâ„¢ Pearl coverstock wrapped around the Nucleusâ„¢ Core. One of the first releases of 2015! We've seen great things from the Cell line over the last few years but this ball tops them all.

I drilled my Hyper Cell Skid 40° x 4 3/4 x 40° pin above the ring finger. I Wanted to optimize the core and cover and let the ball do most of the work. I can use this ball on Heavy to Medium conditions without a problem. It all takes surface adjustments very well. It's a great compliment to the Hyper Cell.

I would suggest this ball for anyone looking for a strong backend reaction late. This ball stores everything for the end and has minimal mid lane read. It's a true representation of SKID- Flip motion

Roto Grip Hyper Cell Skid Review by Casey Murphy

Orientation:  Right Handed
Rev Rate:  375 RPM
Speed:  16-17 MPH
PAP:  4 5/8 straight across

Location:  Enterprise Park Lanes, Springfield MO
Pattern:  High Volume THS
Layout:  40, 4 ¾, 70 with p1 hole

The Hyper Cell Skid is exactly what you want it to be.  It’s a pearl Hyper Cell.  Same great “Cell” roll, except cleaner through the heads and much more backend.  If you liked the Hyper Cell, you’re going to love the Hyper Cell Skid as the perfect complement on drier lanes.

I drilled my pin down to control the motion down lane and I love it.  It doesn’t try to read too early even with the stronger layout, which allows me to use it on multiple lane conditions, not just super heavy oil.  Much like every Cell series ball I’ve thrown, the Hyper Cell Skid gets into that predictable heavy continuous roll that core is famous for.

If you love Cells, the Hyper Cell Skid is a must have!

Weight:  14 lbs.
Pin Length:  3 ”
Drilling:  30X4X30
Pattern Length:  40 ft.
Pattern Volume:  Medium
Pattern Type:  Modified House, THS
Right Handed

The HYPER CELL SKID has the proven Nucleus Core from the popular CELL line, and the 73 MH pearl reactive cover stock.  This is a great combination and packs a lot of punch on the back end.

I have used the HYPER CELL SKID on house patterns, and modified house patterns.  With a minor surface change, I was able to use this ball on different patterns.

For our 39 ft. THS, I’ve had much success using the HYPER CELL SKID at 2000 grit, no polish.    It gets through the heads very smooth, and has a strong turn to the pocket, continuing through the pins.  As the pattern broke down, I was able to make a lateral move in with the HYPER CELL SKID and did not lose carry on the corner pins.

On our modified house/tournament shot, I brought the cover back to the 1500 grit box finish with no polish, and it was plenty of ball for the shot.  I had no trouble getting the corners out.  It had plenty of energy on the back end, even with the little extra surface on it.

This  is a very versatile piece, that can be used on a variety of oil patterns with just some slight surface changes.  If you were a fan of the CELL line years ago, and/or the newer HYPER CELL, you should consider this ball.   It is a good ball to switch to when the HYPER CELL becomes too strong for the breakdown.

The Hyper Cell Skid is the latest release from Roto-Grip in their HP4 Line, the top line in their arsenal. I chose to drill my Hyper Cell Skid with one of my favorite layouts (45x5x45) which has been a benchmark layout for me and I was definitely not disappointed.

The Skid reminds me a lot of the motion I saw out of the Roto-Grip Cell Pearl, arguably one of the best asymmetrical pearls to ever be released, and that is something I really liked right out of the box. The motion this ball creates is just so clean through the fronts and easily creates enough entry angle down lane that as the bowler chases the oil pattern inside it will not have a problem getting those corners out.

I think the Hyper Cell Skid will suit a wide range of bowlers because of its aggressive coverstock and weight block, however I think it will fit really well for bowlers with slightly softer speeds or bowlers that tend to have issues with a ball not having enough recovery (pop) down lane with most equipment. This ball has shined for me so far and I don't see that stopping any time soon!

I have used the Skid on quite a few different patterns and felt it worked well on most of them, however I did feel that it performed on higher volumes slightly better when I knocked some of the polish off of the surface. For the Typical House Patterns I thought the box surface was exactly what I needed it to be, as I felt it allowed me enough length to clear the heads but still had enough teeth to transition in the mid lanes. I was also pleasantly surprised just how many games I could use the Hyper Cell Skid for without it being too aggressive for the pattern, even on the lightest of oil I was able to get the ball to hold line pretty well.

Overall I think the Hyper Cell Skid is going to be a great ball for many bowlers out there, it seems to match up well to just about any style. I would be surprised if it was not in the running for 2015 Ball of the Year based on my experience with the ball over the last month.

Roto Grip Hyper Cell Skid
Introducing the latest ball into the HP-4 line, Hyper Cell Skid. This ball is a great compliment to the Hyper Cell and the Sinister. When either of those balls start to over hook or hook early, you can pull out the Hyper Cell Skid, and it will give you great length with a strong continuous motion in the backend with still reading the mid part of the lanes.

The Hyper Cell Skid uses the ever popular Nucleus core derived from the original "Cell" wrapped around by the 73MH Pearl Reactive Coverstock. With this core/ coverstock combination, I was able to see a strong motion but with a more longer transition and sharper breakpoint. I used this ball on a variety of conditions. At Team USA Trials, I was able to use this ball on the later games on almost every pattern. I was looking for a ball that got down the lane but still didn't push past the breakpoint and would hook off the spot. This was definitely the ball of choice. This ball reminds of a stronger Totally Defiant which was the ball of the year in 2013. I think Roto Grip has hit a grand slam in the HP-4 Line.

Out of box, the Hyper Cell Skid comes at a 1500 grit factory polished finish. This finish helps when the lanes start to get into a transition and your stronger balls start to hook off the spot. I have also adjusted the surface on this ball to a lightly hand sanded 3k finish to get my ball to not flip so hard off the spot and read the lanes a little sooner. This really helped me out on tougher lane conditions. Roto_Grip_Nucleus_Core_Cad_rgb__60994.1384042303.1280.1280 copy

If you are looking for a ball to be a step down from your most aggressive ball in your bag, this is the ball for you. This ball will compliment everyones bag and suite all styles of bowling.
Based off performance, I will give the Skid an "A." Based on the cosmetics of the ball, with the Purple, Gold, and Black color combination, I absolutely love the looks on this ball. Everyone knows its a Hyper Cell Skid rolling down the lane. "A+" on the looks of the ball.

Ball: Hyper Cell Skid
Layout: 60 x 4 x 35 - box condition
Test pattern: 41ft THS and 39ft sport pattern high volume - HPL lane surface with Kegel FLEX machine using fire and ice oil.
Results: The ball reaction was a little later then I expected. The angle entry was good and sharp and the performance in the mid point of the lane reminded me of the Totally Defiant and the Cell Pearl, but with a more aggressive finish and angle in the pocket. I was more comfortable to play outside of the track area on both patterns due to the overall length this drilling and allow the ball to transition well off of the pattern. I did tinker playing between 4th and 5th arrow, and I was surpised it did not burned up and retain good hitting power thru the pin deck. This ball does not quit and I feel it will be a bench mark ball for a number of bowlers.

I have always been weary of asymmetrical cores until I got my hands on a Hyper Cell.  I tried a few different asymmetrical pieces such as the Sync and Byte from Storm but nothing compared to the reaction I got from the Hyper Cell.  The Hyper Cell Skid rolls just as good and in my opinion is the best ball with an asymmetrical core and pearl cover on the market.  It’s pretty much the perfect complement to the Hyper Cell. The Nucleus Core is an astounding piece of work.  The continuous roll that I get is something I have not seen in a long time.

I drilled my Skid the exact same way as my Hyper Cell. Both balls are 4-4.5 inch pins.  I have the pin located above my ring finger with the CG kicked out a low hole.  This past weekend I bowled on a house pattern that was 44 feet.  As my Hyper Cell was too much per most house patterns in St. Louis, I wanted to see how the Skid would fair.  The Skid rolled great.  It got through the heads super clean and had a very controlling and predictable roll.  It also picked up in the flooded middle.

Overall I would rate the Hyper Cell Skid as nothing short of phenomenal.   It’s a must have for medium to heavy oil patterns when the heads start to go or even on the fresh for higher rev players.   Roto Grip does it again!

Went with my favorite layout for this one... 45 x 4 1/2 x 30. Overall reaction was exactly was I was looking for... Cleared the fronts very well, with a solid read of the mid lane and the nice heavy roll off the back of the pattern and kept the pins low.

For the first game I started just outside 3rd arrow with a little bump out to about 8-9 and stayed firm with my speed... and then just kept moving left as the lanes broke down and opened my angles up a little more... I must say that I did have to make moves a little sooner then what I thought I would have to... but then again this isn't a ball for THS... 2nd game I moved left about 3 and 3 and still had a great look.. however by the end of the game I was already needing to chase the oil left again... Moved another 3-2 left and found it again to start the 3rd game... but then had to put it away about half way through and ball down... Games 258-236-225

For me this ball is a monster on a THS and a great compliment to my Hyper Cell that I already have... but I would  recommend this ball to anyone that wants a strong asym pearl... I feel that this will be great on the longer heavier patterns.

The Hyper Cell Skid is Roto Grips newest HP4 Line Pearl Ball.  It is the pearl compliment to the Hyper Cell.  The Box finish is 1500 grit polished which gives it a nice clean look through the fronts and mids and a very strong finish down lane.

I drilled my Hyper Cell Skid with a 50x5x34 layout.  My ball speed is about 15.5mph and my rev rate is about 350.  My goal with this ball was to find a strong pearl that I could play the inside part of the lane and have the ball not die out.  I can honestly say I succeeded.  The Hyper Cell Skid gets through the front part of the lane real clean and it conserves so much energy that the backend reaction is ridiculous.  Depending on the volume and length of the pattern, this will be a great ball from all angles on the lane.  I have thrown it anywhere from second arrow to 5th arrow and the hitting power is strong.  I have thrown a Roto Grip Deranged and a Storm Optimus and this is by far the best reacting ball of the three from inside third arrow and beyond.  I would recommend this ball for any style of bowler for medium heavy to heavy oil lane conditions.

LANE CONDITION

Length: Various lengths

Volume: Various Volumes

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): Various Patterns

The newest release in the HP4 line is the Hyper Cell Skid.  The Hyper Cell Skid has a pearl cover stock 73MH that is wrapped around the legendary Nucleus C ore.  The motion of the Hyper Cell Skid is some serious length with an aggressive move at the break point.   If you ever thrown the Cell Pearl it is that ball on steroids!

The layout that I used on the Hyper Cell Skid was 75 X 5.5 X 75 or pin under the fingers with the mass bias down by the thumb with no extra hole.  My coordinates are 5 5/8 over and ¾ up for my PAP, Ball speed is medium, Rev Rate around 300 and I am right handed.  I will compare the Hyper Cell Skid to the Hyper Cell and also the Totally Defiant.  Before I go any farther, I could not find a long oil pattern to test the Hyper Cell against the Hyper Cell Skid.  So in other words, the Hyper Cell is going to be rolling early on all of the patterns tested.  I was able to throw all the bowling balls on a fresh house pattern (roughly 36 feet), a broken down house pattern and a medium sport shot type pattern (40 feet in length).  The first thing that I noticed was the length and strong/aggressive move by the Hyper Cell Skid.  It did not jerk as much at the break point like the Totally Defiant and was not as smooth as the Hyper Cell’s backend motion.  That was on all the patterns!  The fresh house pattern always gives me trouble because of the wet/dry.  The Hyper Cell being a solid and dull give me the pocket but if I got it too far right it burned up.  The Totally Defiant was Highlight reel…. Either a 2-8-10 or big four reaction and made my angles to the pocket uncomfortable.  The Hyper Cell Skid was a good blend not too early and not too much.  The Hyper Cell Skid allowed me to move right and play the oil line and made it look like a house pattern miss in it held missed right it recovered.  Really where the Hyper Cell Skid excelled was when the pattern started to break down and had to move left.  The Skid was predictable but still had enough power to go through the pins.  The Hyper Cell Skid outclassed the Totally Defiant and the Hyper Cell.  The flatter sport shot pattern the Hyper Cell with its continuous motion throughout the lane kept my lines comfortable but started to roll too early.  The Totally Defiant was a touch too sensitive in the mid-lane and backend.  The Hyper Cell Skid provided a good blend of length and backend motion. If you own a Hyper Cell and you wanted more length and backend reaction than the Hyper Cell Skid is your ball of choice.  A good one two punch.

OWNIT!

Lay out-pin above bridge, cg kicked out 2 inches, mb parallel with my thumb, 5 inches to the right , half inch weight  hole in thumb quadrant,

Lane-40 ft house, pro avilane  surface

What I wanted- I had a glaring  hole between my sister and hysteria and this ball plugged it up completely. Such an amazing piece. Clean thru the heads and turns on the power in the backend.  The ball is very smooth and continous thru the pins, keeping them low increasing carry.

If you don't have one, see your local pro shop soon. You won't be disappointed.

Hyper Cell Skid Ball Review by PJ Haggerty

If you are a fan of the Hyper Cell, this is a perfect step down.  I typically use my Hyper Cell when I’m bowling on heavier volume patterns or am trying to find a slower response time.  The Hyper Cell Skid is a ball that is much cleaner and does have a quicker response time.  The beautiful thing about the Skid is the asymmetrical core that does not change direction too hard.  It’s very, very controllable down lane and takes surface very well.  I used a 2000 pad by hand to make the Skid read the lane a hair sooner, but also slow down the response time a bit as well.  Even with applying that surface, the Skid is still very clean and much different than the original Hyper Cell.

I’ve only drilled one so far and LOVE it.  It’s in my bag everywhere I go and I’ve used it on many different conditions.  My Skid is drilled as so: 4.5 x 3 x 55 with a tiny hole in the P2 area.  It provides me a very smooth and predictable motion with a medium response time.  I think it’s necessary to scratch the surface a bit depending how early you want the ball to read the lane.  When the Skid is shiny – it can be VERY clean.   I have close to 100 games on it so far and it still looks great.  A great piece for many sport and PBA patterns and of course looks great in league!

Go Drill a Hyper Cell Skid if you are looking for a pearl asymmetrical piece that
can go anywhere with you!!

The Hyper Cell Skid is the pearl accompaniment to the Hyper Cell. The Hyper Cell Skid has an RG of 2.52, a differential of 0.056, and an intermediate differential of 0.018 in  15lb balls. The Skid has great shelf appeal with it's black, gold, and violet color combination. The Skid comes from the factory with a 1500 grit polish. I drilled my Skid with a 5x5.5x2.5 layout. There wasn't a need for an extra hole to make it legal.
The Hyper Cell Skid covered a lot of boards for me with the factory finish. The layout and drill combination forced me very deep on the lane, and didn't give me the best ball reaction on our house condition. I decided to sand the cover with a used 1000 grit abralon pad, and had a ball that hooked the entire lane, and was more suitable for heavier volumes of oil.  I then went back to the ball spinner and smoothed the cover out with Storm step #2, getting it back closer to factory finish and then topped that off with some Storm Reacta Shine. I was able to move back left with the Skid, and had a great step down reaction from my Sinister. I was able to use the Skid on a 43 foot sport pattern, as well as house conditions, while keeping my angles a little more direct with such a polished surface. Changing the cover gave me the reaction to the lane that I wanted to see, and made it a more usable ball on a multitude of patterns. It's very important to make sure you adjust the coverstock of a bowling ball, so that it fits your own style of bowling, and lane play. By adjusting the cover, I went from a ball that would have been very condition specific, to a ball that I can use on almost everything but the extremes. The Skid also compliments my Asylum very well. I can start with the Asylum on the fresh and play the pattern a little more square; and when I need to make a  move in because the surface of the Asylum has broken down the pattern, the Skid reacts perfectly by opening up the lane, giving me recovery from the stronger core.
The Hyper Cell Skid is a great ball, that has it’s place in any arsenal. If this is the only ball that you would carry, make sure that you are bowling on a longer pattern, that has some hold built in to the pattern shape. This ball really has a strong continuous move in the backend of the lane.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review of the Hyper Cell Skid. Don’t forget to OWN IT!!

The new  ball in the Roto Grip HP-4 Line is the Hyper Cell Skid.  This the pearl version of the Hyper Cell.  The Skid still has the great Cell roll.  Also has a lot more backend.
I drilled mine 4 1/4 x 4 x 1 1/2 or 40 x 4 1/4 x 35.  Very similar layout to my Hyper Cell.
Very good compliment the the Hyper, as just gives me that extra length and more tip at the back to get the corners out.   During a couple Storm Matchmakers the Skid was a very popular ball, as all styles liked the motion they got from the Skid.

Having had success with many versions of the previous Cell releases, I was excited to try a new pearl version.

I have so much equipment that is just smooth and even, I was thinking about trying to lay it out for something like a skid/flip.  I ended up with something that has a strong, even backend, but nothing super sharp.

I’ve used the Skid on a couple of different house shots and found success on both.  As long as there is some volume in the fronts, I get a very consistent roll.  The only issue I have encountered was on a pair that seemed to have a serious amount of volume with limited backend.  The Skid tried to roll and finish, but the over/under was pretty terrible.  I had to put it away.

I am going to be putting more games on this one and try to get in some games on some sport patterns to get a better idea of how it rolls without bounce on the outside or a massive wall inside.

The overall motion I have seen is very smooth with a distinct move when it encounters friction.  It likes to go, but with my current roll, it wasn’t sharp.  It was predictable and controllable.

Thus far, I really like what I’m seeing.  I need to get more games to determine how it handles other patterns.

If you were a fan of any of the original Cell series, this one should be in your bag.

If you’re like myself, any time Roto Grip releases a ball in the Cell line you know you have to have one.  I've had a lot of success with the Hyper Cell on a variety of conditions.  The Skid, as expected, offered the perfect step down when the Hyper Cell becomes a bit early or you need something a bit quicker off the spot.

With the OOB surface this ball floats through the front of the lane with ease and makes a very solid move off the spot without being too jumpy.  If you’re looking for a strong move on the back while being clean through the front this could be the answer.  I love the original Hyper Cell but found that I could not really use it effectively on a typical house shot due to the strong cover. This fixes that issue as I am able to use this with no issues and I am able to move left and watch this ball recover with no issues.

Check out the link below for the video comparison between the Hyper Cell and the Hyper Cell Skid.

Lay Out: 4.5" from PAP at 60* PAP angle and 40* VAL angle. Dual angle measurement would be 60/4.5/40. No weight hole as I wanted to throw it first and then make tweaks if needed.

Surface: Box which is 1500 Reacta-Shine. I also tried it at 3000 sa-air abralon by hand.

Purpose: I wanted a stronger pearl ball to throw either on longer patterns or to be able to move into the puddle for leagues.

Observations: The Hyper Cell Skid is the ball Roto heads have been craving since the original Cell Pearl. I threw it some side by side with the Optimus, Lucid, and Unhinged. The Optimus was longer with some of the same shape. On longer patterns with the Skid at 3000 there is enough separation to "ball down" from the Skid to the Optimus. Out of box, they are very close with the Skid being just a little more flippy on the back. The Lucid is one that i have always kept at the box finish of 4000. The Lucid has been a life saver for me on longer/flatter patterns as the back end reaction is very predictable. The Skid is right there with it and with 3000 has more grab early. The Skid has more downlane shape and may cause me to have to open up my angles more with it than the Lucid. Compared to the Unhinged, there can be a little bit of a gap especially if your at a place that gets wet/dry very quickly. If you surface the Skid, then the gap gets wider and might need something in between unless you can change shapes or skid the heads with your ball speed and/or release. Putting an Outcry in between these covers any gap and makes a pretty good 1-2-3 punch.

Conclusions: The Hyper Cell Skid is definitely a great piece and compliment to ball down with the original Hyper Cell or Sinister. It is also a good piece to fill the gap between your stronger solids and the lower powered Outcry to Unhinged to UpRoar/Wrecker. Try one out, you won't be disappointed.

Hand: Left
Ball Speed: 16-17mph
Ball Weight: 15lbs
PAP: 5 left 7/16 up
Degrees of Tilt: 17
Layout: 3 ¼ x 6 x 2 ½

The Roto Grip Hyper Cell Skid has the pin next to the ring finger with the cg out and PSA under the thumb with a weight hole down to help it pick up in the mid lane with the surface at factory finish which is 1500 polish. Having the nucleus weight block that has been successful in the original cell and other cell balls it was a no brainer this one would be right up there with the other great cells. For myself game 1 out the box I shot 279 during a tournament so I had an idea that the Hyper Cell Skid would be a soon to be favorite. Hence the name Hyper Cell SKID is for sure has some skid to it but with A LOT of strong back end motion with the pearl cover stock but controllable which makes sense with the famous weight block. Comparing it to the Hyper Cell solid the solid version would be my first ball on heavy oil or a longer sport pattern then once the lanes break down then I can go to the Hyper Cell Skid and stay in the same area and get it down lane and have almost a flip look down lane.

Normally on a fresh house shot I don’t like to use strong pearl balls because they can be too much ball reaction but with the Hyper Cell Skid I figured to give it a try and see what it would do and surprised me on how well it handled a drier condition for what it is meant for. Going back to the 279 game that is how I shot it; it was on house shot game 1 fresh and I was able to use it the rest of the 4 game block since we moved lanes. During league it is also a house shot and I went back to back weeks with 700s one with a 788 and 746. On kegel route 66 which at the time was the pattern we were on in sport league; I was shocked on how well I able to get some movement on that pattern with it being long and a good amount of oil. I would play really straight and direct around 9 or 10 board and let the ball’s back end motion get it to the pocket and not having to force it. I have never had a strong pearl on a longer pattern be able to do that. If you are looking for a strong pearl with great back end almost like “skid flip” then the Hyper Cell Skid is the one for you.

Likes: If you were to look up the term "long and strong" in the bowlers dictionary, there would be the factory write up/picture of the Hyper Cell Skid! The ball simply "wow's" me every time I throw it. The most challenging thing that I face with this ball is keeping it IN my bag and not in my hand nonstop. It absolutely eats up house shots and most patterns other than the slickest or driest. The Nucleus core is just as great as it always has been and the new 73MH Pearl coverstock is so responsive and strong off of the dry. The layout I chose was 5"x3"x4" buffer. Even with that smooth of a buffer, the ball is still so quick in transition. With a little surface on the ball, the cover can handle some higher volume patterns with appropriate speed. It offers a "flippier" shape than the Hyper Cell and saves all of the energy for the back end. The ball hits like a truck and sprays pins everywhere. Bottom line, the Hyper Cell Skid is a strong, flippy, savage, asymmetric pearl that belongs not in your bag...but in your hand! #OwnIt
