Title: RS-1
Post by: admin on December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM
Have you ever wanted to harness the power of a shooting star?

Roto Grip® has done it with the introduction of the RS-1tm. This new mid-price ball delivers unmatched performance in its class.

The modified Rotary IIItm core has been encapsulated to lower the RG as well as raising the differential. This translates into better read in the body of the lane along with stellar energy retention down the lane.

The Sure Griptm pearl reactive shell on the Roto Star provides modest length and volatile backend reaction on those medium patterns.

The distinguishing feature of this ball is that it keeps on coming.  Send the ball to the dry and when it starts hooking it keeps on hooking.  You can go deep and bounce the ball off dry boards on the outside.

For people with less hand and still want to cross boards, this would be the ball for you.  There is no rollout. Hands people may find this ball flippy.

The ball will work best on mediums/medium heavy oil.  Out of the box there is too much shine to go through heavy oil.  The RG is not high, but the polished pearl surface get the ball gets it down the lane saving energy for a strong move on the backend.

The ball was drilled with the pin just above the ring finger and the CG moved toward the PAP for almost maximum positive side weight.  No balance hole.  (About a 5 X 4 drilling.)  I throw slower speed, more of a tweener.

A lot of bang for the buck.

I agree with the previous review in that this ball just keeps on coming. There seems to be no stop to this ball. I drilled mine with the pin at 4 1/2 inches  just above the ring finger. I placed the mass bias strong. Ball has finishing weights of 1/2 side  1/4 finger and 3/4 top weight. Ball started out 15lb 6oz  pin out 3 1/2 inches from the cg. So far have only thrown this ball on our friday classic league  tougher shot (less oil in the middle and more on the outsides than the normal house shot). This ball got great length with devastating back end. It hooked more than my x-factor pro / depth charge and recharge. Can't weights to throw this on a little more oil so I can square up more. Great buy for the money!

Woweeee………

Thanks Hank and Roger for the sample ball.  I first have to note for the readers here that I took off the factory surface, sanded it to 600 grit (sanding lines are around the center of the grip) and re-shined it with Storm X-tra Shine.  This makes the ball read the end of the pattern smoother and accentuates the hard arcing move on the backend.  Leave the factory finish on it and you’ll see more of a hockey-stick shape that needs friction to “get the corner”.

In my configuration, the RS-1 can best be described as mid lane read like the Rush, backend angularity like the Apocalypse.  I know what you’re thinking that those two reactions are at the opposite ends of the spectrum and that’s not possible.  But consider that the RG level of the RS-1 is only 1 point higher than the Rush and the differential is currently the #7 ball on the market.  Believe me or not is up to you, but for those that pick up this ball, you’ll soon find out.

I would recommend drilling this ball in CG-out configurations to heighten the core dynamics.  I think balls drilled in “stack”, “12:00”, “75 degree” type layouts will not read the backend as predictably as with layouts kicked out to the side.

Hank and Roger know how much I like my Silver Streak Solids and I emailed them yesterday to tell them I retired my original SS Solid in favor of the RS-1, and it wasn’t a hard decision.  Give it a look in box finish, knock off the factory shine and try that and make your eventual decision on what surface gives you the best look on the lane.

For pro shop operators, Roto Grip has a benefit program called the “STAR Pro Shop Program” that rivals the other company programs being offered by Columbia, Ebonite, Hammer, Track and even Storm.  At just $295 for the first year this program paid for itself 20 times over last season for our shop and it can for you too.  (Click on the story at http://www.rotogrip.com/stories.aspx?fullstoryid=145)

First of all i would like to thank  to Roger and Hank for all the support this year.
RS-1
This ball is the best pearlized ball i have seen and thrown in quite sometime .This ball goes about 3 to 4 more feet down the lane than the regular Retro Resurrection does with more pop on the backend. It reads more smoother than any pearlize ball. This medium oil ball is the best pearlized ball that does not just skid flip like the others out their on the market.
I drilled my RS-1 a stacked with the pin under the ring finger with the cg kicked out 1 1/2in. with a small weight hole in the side.I have bowled with on fresh cleaned lanes and with carry down. I had to move my feet 3 right and my target 3 right, after 30 games bowled on the pair.
Since i have recieve this ball 3 sets of bowling in league  749, 821, 734.
In two different houses, two honors scores from ABC .
278 265 278= 821
290 210 234= 734

Roto Grip does it again!

If you liked the retro roto series but were unable to find one on Ebay or your local pro shop your going to love the RS-1. The RS-1 is extremely clean down the lane.  When the Rotary 3 core kicks in, look out the pins don't have a chance.  This ball hits with the best of them.  Keep it around the head pin and you'll see immediate results.  Shine and stack it and the lefty will love it.  The righties however might want to drill it with the pin a little higher, once the oil pattern becomes blown out.
With equipment like this, why would you want to throw anything else.

If you loved the Silver Streak Pearl, you're going to jump through hoops about the new RS-1.  I was wondering if this ball was going to be a less reactive version of the Resurrection, but it actually is a heavier rolling pearlized version.

Clean through the heads, it is very aggressive at the break point.  Keeping the pin right of the ring finger and a strong PAP will allow this ball to rev as hard as you want.  Used it for the first time in league last night and shot 300 second game at Western Bowl in Cincy.

It will be a part of the arsenal from now on.

Rog, Hank....keep up the fantastic work there!!!

Just drilled one earlier this week. Pin was 1"-2", small label shift (1/2 POS) leaving pin in 1:30 position. This ball makes retiring my Pearl SS easier. I was very impressed by the way this ball cleared the fronts as well as it's hitting power.

Hank and Roger, Great Job!

This is a review on the second RS-! that i have drilled. Like the first ball i have drilled this ball pin 4 1/2 inches from my pap with the mass bias strong. The difference in this ball is that i have put the pin below my fingers rather than above as on my other RS-!. This ball reads the lane about 5-7 feet sooner than my other ball. This ball is smoother and more predictable rather than flippy but still hits like a truck!

RAW NAKED POWER!!!!!!

Phenomenal power at the pins! Big hook if needed. Versatile.

Drilled it 5 (pin) x 5 (cg) Great midlane read. Suprising continuation through the pins.  Awesome pin action. Clean through the front like a pearl but so very strong through the mid lane and at the break point. Multiple 700's and a 300 since drilling it. Played a very wet condition. I was able to square up with the ball and still get a great read.  Backend power made up for lack of early traction.

Right hander likes to watch his ball hook :  I drilled the RS-1 stack leverage.  Partly to see how much this ball will hook.  At the breakpoint the ball went SIDEWAYS. My customer was estatic. I was amazed.

Low rev low speed lefty - Put pin under ring finger and cg kicked a little.  Ball pick up very well in mid lane. Hitting power is fantastic. He can comfortably throw longer strings of strikes.  He has had 289 and 290 last 2 weeks.

15 lb. with a 1' pin, so I was fairly limited on drillings, but I decided to stack it just outside of my palm.  What a great ball.  It reads the dry like no other ball I have thrown, especially a pealized.  The transition from oil to dry is a continuos strong arc.  Even at the ABC Masters, there was no skid flip in this ball.  While watching some of the top pros throwing there equipment, hitting the dry and snapping left, rolling out, the RS-1 reacted so much better.  Incredibly predictable.  I liked this one so much, I decided to buy another one and drill it more aggressively.

#2, 15 lb. pin above the ring finger with the CG kicked out.  What a killer ball.  This one had a little more snap, but still read the dry great, and created about 8-10 boards of more hook.  Huge difference in drilling, and boards of hook, but the same great result.  Predictability on the back ends, and incredible hitting power.

Ball #1, I made the top 64 at the ABC Masters
Ball #2, I shot 298-781 first night out.

What more could you ask for.

As a "non-rotogrip staff member," I can give a real review of the RS-1.  I picked one up with a 3" pin and just a touch over 3 oz top weight.  Layed the ball out with a 4.5 X 5 layout in hopes of having a ball for drier lanes.  This gave basically a label drill with the pin above the ring finger.  No weight hole was required.  I left the ball in box condition.

After drilling the ball, I took it out for the traditional couple test shots to make sure everything fits and the ball doesn't roll over any finger/thumb holes.  Synthetic lanes, 40ft medium heavy house shot.  On this condition, the ball got great length, but was very touchy at the break point and seemed to be very speed sensitive.  No big surprise as this isn't the condition the ball was designed for...  The ball did show signs of having a strong recovery, even on this heavier oil shot.

I really had bought this ball with hopes of covering more of the medium dry to dry lane conditions.  Thus I saved it for the following night:  league night at a old wooden-lane house, shot of the week has been medium oil that severely breaks down.  Almost seems as though the deeper you move, the earlier the ball jumps.  Started out on the fresh shot playing down the boards and scoring well...then warm-ups were over.  At the start of the night, I moved five left with feet and strung the next 5 in a row.  Very nice length with the ball and a smooth & predictable break point.  The backend reaction was stronger than most other balls I own.  Just like clockwork, that line disappeared and I was forced to move further inside.  The RS-1 is PLENTY strong to play any sort on inside line, providing you have any sort of hand at all.  I had no problem getting the ball back, as a matter of fact, it was actually a little stronger than I had expected (especially with the relatively tame layout).  Unforunately by the last game the lanes became so dry that the RS-1 was virtually unplayable.  At this point I had moved in a deep as possible (due to ball returns), standing at 50, crossing the arrows at 25 and swinging the ball out to around 10 at the break point.  Not because the ball would roll out, but rather because I was unable to achieve enough  length from the ball.  Based upon this, I would say that even though this ball is a pearl, it is on the stronger side.  Best conditions would be medium oil, as the ball is too strong for dry lanes unless you either spin the ball, have no hand, or have high ball speed.  The ball looks very good (love the red/grey swirl pearl) and has plenty of backend to recover from just about anywhere on the lane.  Although this ball seems to be fairly condition specific (most useful on medium oil and thus overlaps with most everything else), I have the rate the ball above average for backend strength and overall good looks.  Because I wanted a ball to cover the drier conditions, I am going to wet-sand the cover to a higher grit, then polish again...trying to achieve more length.  Any questions, feel free to PM me.

My RS-1 is 16# ...box condition, drilled 4 1/2x3 1/2 w/ a small weight hole just below pap.

This ball is a 3rd game special for me.  My faults lie in the midlane, so an earlier reading ball is better for me usually, and even though this is a pearl, it's low rg and high diff give me enough for my game.

I got this ball for medium to medium light conditions where I need a bigger backend to get around slop and thru broken down heads......WOW...bingo! This ball is almost too much for me....as long as there is friction....you'll be in business!

I throw this ball primarily on Brunswick Pro Anvilanes (2+years old) on a 39 foot ths that breaks down differently each week and depending on what lanes you're on.  The RS-1 is perfect for when things get sloppy up front and I need extra length to get around the corner.

I could probably get away with this ball first game as well by going more direct, but that line dissapears far too fast and I'd be brooklyn immediately.

Typical Roto hit with this ball...you won't be dissapointed!  A great replacement for the Silver Streak Pearl!..Makes me wonder if they'll consider a solid version of THIS core (differnet specs than the Retro Ressurection).

If you need a strong rolling big backend pearl....don't look any further!

I am a 17-18 mile per hour cranker about 420-450 revs.
I have my RS1 layed out with pin under middle cg swung to 530 and a rev hole half inch under my pap
This ball gets great lenght and a very aggressive flip this ball turns ove like it is being shot at in a bad neiborhood. I am so impressed with the reaction on this ball. I cannot use this ball on dry patterns thought it is way to over reacting. Oh I play on a 42 foot pattern med to heavy oil. Well this is what I think of this ball!!

I drilled this ball with the pin 5 1/2" and the CG 4 1/2"'s from PAP.  This ball reacts like strong Pearl Silver Streak.  Huge back ends and good length.  Allowed me to move left and open up the lane.  With my game, which is a power stroker at a little over 15 MPH, I've yet to find a condition too dry for this ball but some long oil conditions make the ball skid too far.  But if I scuff the surface then it will work on the longer oil also.  If you liked the Pearl Silver Streak, like we all did, you'll love the RS-1.

Memo Rosales from Bowlers Image in El Monte laid out this gem
4 1/2 " from my Pap under ringer finger with imaginary MB at 55 degrees
I bring this with me everywhere . I really like this ball when I can use it.
I think ball is more forgiving the silver streak pearl by far! I feel this is the best pearl on the market period

I just wanted to chime in about this bad boy.  I layed my RS-1 with a fairly safe label weight drill.  About a 3 1/2 inch pin tucked neatly next to the ring finger.  I am happy to report I have shot my first 300 since making the switch to Roto equipment.  This ball absolutely owns medium conditions for me.  And to my surprise it is also great when lanes are starting to transition.  The RS-1 allows me to move in when my weaker equipment is starting to give out and still has the legs to cut through the carry down.  Don't miss out on constant performer.  Thanks again Roto Grip!!!

All I can say is "Holy Backend Batman!"  I just bought this ball to try out another company since I'm a die hard Storm thrower.  Good thing Roto is made by Storm.  Got a 15# with a 3 3/4" pin and 3 oz top weight.  I needed to find something that gave me the flip that my Ace originally had but now is starting to die.  Drilled this one up  5 x 3 (Axis is 5 1/2" over and 3/8" up, RH) Ball came off the press with over an ounce of finger and 2 ounces side.  So I drilled the fingers deeper to fix that problem and drilled the thumb deep to take that to zero.  Drilled a 7/8" weight hole an inch in from my axis right next to Roto Star logo and left it with 1 ounce side.  Only threw about a game on it but I like it so far.  On a fresh lane, 38' Top Hat shot at my house, if I swung it to the dry, look out 8 pin.  This ball hits like a tank and slaps that 10 pin out nice.  If I pulled it a little, it would hold an still carry.  Thats what I need this early in the season with the new pins in our house not carrying very well right now.  I've got an RS-X coming with similar specs that I am going to drill 4 x 4 to use as a heavy oil ball.  I got a friend getting the new Epic that I have to drill for him and I will post a review on that one soon.  I think I'm going to like this ball.

I have two of these, one is drilled with pin about 2" above the inside of the middle finger with cg under the outside of the ring finger (1), and the other is drilled with pin above middle finger and cg about 5:30 in reference to the pin(2). Both balls revved up rather quickly for a pearl but never wanted to over react. Number 1 was too strong for some patterns but once I got some carry down the ball kept me in play. Number 2 is a very smooth roller for when I find myself with very little head oil or extremely wet dry conditions. Absolutely love the ball my arsenal is not complete without it.

Check profile for bowler diagnostics:

Pin 4 1/2 inches from PAP (2 inch pin), under ring, small low hole on VAL, went pin down to eliminate any possible (squirt) and tame backend. Needless to say this thing still rips on the back.

Surface: Left as is

Test Centers:

House #2- Brunswick Pro-Anvilane, medium heavy blend, track opens up and carries down slighty.

House #3- HPL's (heads only), wood backends, 34 ft pattern buffed to 37. Track blows up quick forcing players deep early

House #5- HPL's, again not sure of pattern, as mechanic is a caveman lacking people skills. They use an old pad machine and this place flat out hooks, everywhere and from every angle.

House #6- Very old wood, not sure of pattern, not even sure if they employ a lane man or even have a lane machine. Place flat out hooks, early and often.

Was looking for something a tad longer than my One and Overtime, but more strength/recovery than my Ultra Sonic. After mulling it over it came down to the RS-1. Fills a niche right between the Overtime and the Ultra Sonic very well.

Likes-
-Midlane read, most pearls tend to keep going past this point of the lane, not the RS-1
-Recovery/Backend, ball flips back violently from most anywhere, regardless of where you are playing the lane, most backend in my bag, more pronounced flip than my One
-Hit- sends messengers all over the place, ball just shreds racks, as far as pure power, strongest in my bag
-Core Strength, can handle heavier volumes of oil and some carrydown.

Dislikes-
-Condition specific, probably best suited for THS/walls. Too erractic on fresh, tougher patterns.
-Transition, this isnt necessarily a dislike but the RS-1 lets you know when its time move your feet, 3-6-10's, 6-10's, big 4's a plenty if you dont keep an eye on the way the pins are falling or the way the ball is rolling
-Hit, again, sometimes its like the gift and curse all in one. Major league ringing 10's. Also I kind of get use to messengers going every which way I expect messengers to clear the deck almost everytime.

Conclusion:
Good strong pearl to chase the pattern in or a ball where you need to get it to the "proverbial" spot and have it bend off of it. You need head oil somewhere in the front part of the lane. If I can use this ball comfortably, im putting up telephone numbers. Otherwise I better get my spare ball because if early tests are anything 9/ will be pretty common with this ball due to its flip of the breakpoint. Great ball for strokers and tweeners, may be too early and have too much power in the back for crankers. All in all it fits where I wanted it to. Good ball but by no means is it a Silver Streak Pearl. But thats another discussion for another day.

I just drilled up an RS-1 after many months of doing research on this ball. my first impressions are wow!

I got one with a 3" pin. ball is drilled with the pin over the ring finger and the mass bias in the strong position.

I threw it on a fresh house shot and boy was i suprise. this ball is crazy! it goes through the heads so clean and then as soon as it gets to the backends it makes a U-turn for the pocket. it makes its turn and just keeps on going. I realized this when I left the 4-9 in the pocket.

I beilieve that this is a ball that should be in anyones arsenal. thumbs up to roto grip!

This is an oldie but a goodie. This is my 2nd rs-1 to date, this one is used, pin over RF with the cg down and slightly to the right of the midline. There is a balance hole 3in rt of midline approximately on the val. I loved this ball as a kid and regret giving it up for anything. I bowl a team usa experience league and have used it a couple times with great success. I helped my team win the quarter on the altanta pattern and the ball is phenomenal. Hits as hard as i remember, and it rolls like a champ. Very even and constant with great continuation thru the pins. This ball might be 7yrs old, but it does not act like it. I used it this week on the sydney pattern with decent success for about a game and a half before i had to move left. Im looking forward to what next week may bring. I will also be getting an rs-p to handle a bit more oil but not as much as my jigsaw corner. Looking forward to rocking the old school arsenal!!! Also looking forward to possibly redrilling my old rush
