Rubicon UC2
« on: February 11, 2021, 11:01:24 AM »
Roto Grip is doing something different with the Rubicon upper-mid performance balls in their HP3 line of balls. Like the original Rubicon the Rubicon UC2 (Ultimate Concept 2) uses the asymmetrical Rondure Core which was designed to provide more ball motion overall without the need for the now-banned balance hole. This performance core is wrapped in Roto Grip's eTrax-S20 Pearl Reactive coverstock which was formulated to offer a response on various lane conditions due to its ability to clear the lane then react powerfully on the backend. Out of the box this ball is ideally used on medium to medium/heavy oil conditions.

Color: Cosmic Black/Purple Sky
All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown
Core: Rondure Core (Asymmetrical) (14-16#)
Coverstock: eTrax-S20 Pearl Reactive
Finish: 1500-grit Polished
RG: 2.49 (for 15# ball)
Differential: 0.052 (for 15# ball)
Recommended Lane Condition: Medium to Medium/Heavy

Ball Specs:
Roto Grip Rubicon UC2
Coverstock: 1500 Polished eTraxâ„¢ Pearl Reactive
Weight Block: Rondureâ„¢ Core (Asymmetrical)
Color: Cosmic Black/Purple Sky

Review:
The Rubicon UC2 continues the greatness of the Rubicon line giving you a ball to transition to as the lanes change. Because of this, you see a lot of seasoned veterans and tournament bowlers transitioning to this piece deep in a block. For the average league bowler or someone looking to expand their bag, the price point offers a look into strong backend motion with incredible continuation. Overall, this ball is a very versatile piece of equipment and there is no doubt you will be seeing a lot of purple and black on TV.

Roto Grip Rubicon UC - e-TRAX pearl coversotck - Rondure Core
1500ab grit with factory polish - layout 55 x 2 1/2 x 55
The next step in ball motion is here - the Roto Grip Rubicon UC2. The Rondure core is a edgy core design, making the core asymmetrical, but very close to a symmetrical after drilling.
On mine Bret at Bowlers' Supply laid it out to miss a majority of the spikes on the core to keep the integrity of the core in place.
Even with short pin layout, the ball still went down farther down lane then the Roto Grip Idol Synergy and the Nuclear Cell with longer pin layouts. The "wobble" that the ball produces allows it to pack a powerful punch off of the dry and packs power through the pin deck.
Used the ball on older HPL with a 44ft THS with a HUGE amount of volume and the ball rode through the front part of the pattern like a ninja sword slicing through watermelons. Best additional for a step up from the RST X-1 and the Idol Synergy.
Thanks to Bowlers' Supply, Inc and Vise Inserts for their continued support and teaching more about this awesome game of bowling!!!

The Rubicon UC2 is everything I expected and then some. For me the UC2 will be a great THS ball or a later in the day tournament ball. Its so clean down the lane, but once it hits the friction it just goes. The backend reaction is really where this ball shines, as you can just keep moving left with your feet, the ball drives harder and harder off the dry. I was a little worried that for me this ball would go to long before making the turn, and leaving a lot of corner pins, that was not the case. The pin action is something that is most impressive with the UC2. This is a ball that will be in the bag for a long time.

Review
The HP3 line Rubicon UC2 has the Rondure Core which was developed to increase the ball’s motion throughout the lane with the absence of the balance hole. The UC2 is very clean through the front part of the lane, reads the midlane well and turns the corner hard on the backend. As a mid to low rev player the UC2 eTrax Pearlized cover stock will flex its muscles during transition especially on longer house patterns to help get the corner pins out. I tested this ball on 44 feet typical house pattern with a lot of down lane transition. This ball will be in my bag for league and tournaments. This is a great ball for all levels of bowlers. Core: Rondure Core

Diff: 0.052

PSA: .011

Layout: 35 x 4 3/4 x 15

Drilled the same as my 900 Global HB Intensity and Revival, I was looking for the same shape but more snap. With the slightly lower rg and higher differential I could easily see more of an angular motion at the breakpoint than than the HBs.

After 21 games I am able to use the UC2 more as a game 2 ball after the Intensity and before the Revival. I was pleased with the pearl covers performance during breakin period as pearls usually take a longer time for me to use consistently.

Overall a very complimentary ball to the solid or first ball out the bag depending on your preference.

I’m a big fan of the E-trax cover and could not wait to throw this beast. First love the colors on this ball really looks good going down the lane. Now lets talk about the ball motion really clean through the fronts really picks up mid lane and boy does it go on the backend and through the pins with authority. This ball def meet by expectations and I am loving it .. Grab one today you will not be disappointed

The new HP4 ball in the RG line is the Rubicon UC2.  RG took the very successful Rubicon and added a pearl cover (eTrax-S20 Pearl Reactive).
I drilled my with the standard pin up above fingers and MB an inch right of thumb.
When first throwing the UC2 I was like wow a lot of backend reaction. Super clean and angular downlane.  A "Quick Ball". On the fresh it was really too much down lane, where the UC2 shines is later in blocks or 2nd or 3rd game of league when the heads burn up a little.  I have added a little surface to cover to help slow it down a little on sport patterns.  Very popular balls with the PBA guys and league bowlers.  Definitely a home run from the Schlem and Utah guys!

Roto Grip Rubicon UC2

Cover Stock: eTrax Pearl Reactive

Core: Rondure Core

My review of the UC2 will be different than any other you will read.

When the UC2 was released I was very happy with the mid-strength pearls in my arsenal and was worried about overlap, so I drilled my UC2 for very little flare.

I drilled my UC2 60x5x50, looking for a urethane like roll with a little more punch through the pins.

Long pin to pap layouts are similar to short pin to pap layouts for me. Anything 5" or more or 2" or less will have very little flare.

With this layout, my UC2 looks just a touch stronger than my Fast Pitch...not what it was intended to do for most people but it's something I didn't have in the bag at the time. It's not for everyone but it is a useful situational ball for me.

I dont review many balls anymore but had to post on the UC2.  I picked this ball up after a demo day where I threw about 6 Storm, Roto,Global pieces.  The UC2 stood out with a unique roll look abd fantastic continuation .

You lower rev guys like me know what often happens as we move in on walled up house patterns.  No problem hooking it wide but carry is problematic.  The UC2 makes the hardest most continuous move off the spot of any pearl I have ever thrown.  Bowled in a house this weekend where I will normally do anything including urethane to stay right and not leave weak 10s.  Went right to about 13 board with the UC2 and continued left over 6 games to 4th arrow.  Ball was still booming to the pocket.  Stronger than my trusty Hero or Hyper Cell Fused.  The UC2 just wont burn up from angles where other pearls quit on me.

I realize this is an older ball, but just want to throw my review in since it’s one of my favorite pearls of all time! I still see a ton of pros throwing it to this day in huge money situations. It’s quite disappointing that Rotogrip decided to discontinue the UC2 as it’s one of the best flip boom asymm pearls in the Storm Universe. Being a huge mark, I originally bought mine after watching Shannon O’Keefe win a PWBA event with it and being really impressed with the ball motion. I also notice Kyle Troup seems to use it a lot as well.

Pros

- Long, straight, flip, boom! That is the UC2. This asymm pearl is an extremely usable angular hockey stick shape that will skid straight and clean through the front and mids. Then take a very hard sharp turn at the end of the pattern in it’s roll phase. In my mind, the UC2 is one of the most stereotypical asymm pearl flip boom shapes I’ve seen.

- The UC2 can read and react for several games before pooping out like other pearls. One of the most consistent pearls I’ve thrown.

- With how aggressive this ball flips, the core winds it up very nicely as it explodes through the pins. When the UC2 is working, it’s a wonderful experience as it will smash through the pocket beautifully leading to huge scores. It’s a really neat motion as the ball stores it’s energy beautifully for the backend roll phase.

- One of my biggest pet peeves is when a ball just poops out and gives you nothing on the backend at higher speeds. One of the things I like the most about the UC2 is it will always try to drive and give you something. Even on the wrong conditions or throwing it like a gorilla, this ball will still try to shape and give you something on the backend.

- Very customizable and will keep up with you whether you want to throw it fast or slow. Hitting this ball with Reacta Shine, it explodes off the breakpoint like a screaming Randy Johnson slider. I was shocked actually how aggressive you could make this ball by playing with the surface. I love booming the ball Eugene McCune style up the gutter and the UC2 is one of the best pearls I’ve experienced for doing that. But this ball is also very controllable, if you want to crank slower curve balls south of 20 and have a nice flip boom hockey stick motion into the pocket.

- I’ve put maybe 100-150 games on my UC2. I absolutely love it. Has held up excellently, still a regular pick for my bag when I’m looking for a flip boom motion or nice controllable kind of medium-higher pearl asymm.

Cons

- This is probably going to sound silly but I really think one of the reasons this ball didn’t become bigger is the single dark purple color with the pink lettering. I think if this ball aesthetic was cooler looking, it would have been much more popular and probably still in production today. The UC2 is probably the best undercover ball I’ve experienced. One of the best performing balls that pros love yet gets no hype because it’s so generic looking with pink lettering.

In conclusion, this is definitely one of my favorite pearls of all time that I still use regularly. In some houses, it’s a little too niche. But in other houses, it’s a God ball, especially if you like stroking at higher speeds. While I lean towards the Altered or the Katana Assault for first pearl out of the bag because those balls are a little more aggressive, I still love my UC2 as that number two pearl and a different look when other things aren’t working. I actually have some anxiety about Rotogrip discontinuing this ball as I’m not sure there’s another ball like this currently in the Storm Universe.
