Rubicon UC3
« on: November 05, 2021, 03:55:22 PM »
Roto Grip continues to do something different with the Rubicon upper-mid performance balls in their HP3 line of balls. Like the original Rubicon and the Rubicon UC2 the Rubicon UC3 (Ultimate Concept 3) uses the asymmetrical Rondure Core which was designed to provide more ball motion overall without the need for the now-banned balance hole. This performance core is wrapped in Roto Grip's Tour-ethane Pearl Reactive coverstock which was formulated to offer max performance as well as control when facing high friction patterns and surfaces.

Color: Platinum Pearl
All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown
Core: Rondure Core (Asymmetrical) (14-16#)
Coverstock: Tour-ethane Pearl
Finish: 1000-grit Abralon
RG: 2.49 (for 15# ball)
Differential: 0.052 (for 15# ball)
Recommended Lane Condition: Light Oil – Medium/Light Oil

When i heard we were making another asymmetrical urethane ball i was a little nervous just cause i wasn't the biggest fan of the hot cell. But once i put holes in this new Rubicon UC3 I was blown away. This ball gives you everything you want out of a urethane ball. This ball likes to pick up and slow down just about anywhere i threw it on the lanes. I can't wait to get out to some of these shorter patterns and test this ball out. If you're looking for the next urethane ball in your bag, LITERALLY look no further this is rthe ball for you. One of my favorite urethane balls of all time. Get to your local pro shop, put your favorite layout and you'll be off to the races.

New! Best way to describe the UC3 is new. Urethane but different then all other Urethane out there. It's like it knows when to be a Urethane ball and when to be resin. It will be an absolute must for all serious bowlers. If you don't have it there will be times you're at a disadvantage to everyone else who does.

Review:
This is a special ball for so many reasons. Not often do you see a pearl urethane asymmetric ball drop and be so successful and talked about. This ball seems to react well on all different kind of lane surfaces and patterns. Even when you need a ball to hook, freshening up the surface with an abralon pad will make all the difference in the world. The continuation and carry down on this ball is also amazing. Overall, the combination of core and cover is really special and looks great with that matte grey finish.

The Rubicon UC3 is an asymmetric pearl urethane that helps you have control on high friction and short oil patterns. This ball is a great piece for someone who likes something that will not overreact or underreact. This ball can even be used as a benchmark ball on some house shot patterns as well.

Rubicon UC3 Review by Jamaal Oliver

Rev Rate: 375
Ball Speed: 15-16 mph
PAP: 5 inches over, 1/2 inch up
Layout: 60x5x30

The Rubicon UC3 brings urethane to a new level of lane play versatility. You want to use it on sport shots? Check! How about your typical house shot? Check and check! The combination of the Tour-ethane Pearl cover stock and Rondure asymmetrical core gives it a shape that you won’t normally see in a urethane bowling ball. I’ve been impressed with how I can shape the ball like a regular reactive without seeing the tendencies that would keep me from using a urethane ball on a house shot. If you took the name off the ball you wouldn’t even notice the difference. And of course, the UC3 has its place when the shot gets tougher(sport shot). This is an excellent piece to have with you during your tournament weekends and you can now dabble with it during league as well. Check out the Rubicon UC3 at your local pro shop today!

Review:
When this ball was first announced I got excited. A pearl urethane? It instantly made me think of the old Natural Pearls which was one of my favorite bowling balls. But when I got the ball and drilled it then went and bowled with it, it reminded me more of the Badger Infused which was a hybrid mix of reactive resin and urethane compound. The Rubicon line has been very successful as a whole, adding a ball like this pushed that line to the next level. This ball is a little stronger than traditional urethane which makes it great for those tournament level bowlers. When the lanes start to get to much carry down, I switch to this ball which allows me to control my angles better and still stay striking, Make sure you grab one!

The Rubicon UC3 is one of the most unique balls I have ever thrown.  If you didn’t know this ball was urethane and you watched it go down the lane, you would think it was a reactive ball.  The UC3 features an all-new Tour-Ethane pearl urethane coverstock and has the asymmetrical Rondure core.  The ball comes finished at 1000 grit abralon and at 15 pounds has an RG of 2.49, a differential of .052 and an intermediate differential of .011.  The 1000 grit finish makes this ball very strong in the front part of the lane.  I found that by bringing the surface up to 3000, the ball got the length that I was looking for.  The backend is where this urethane ball separates itself from previous balls such as the Pitch Black or Fast Pitch.  The UC3 allowed me to open my angles and still provided more than enough recovery on the backend to get the ball to the pocket and go through the pins the right way.  This is a great ball for shorter and flatter tournament patterns and can even be thrown on a typical league house shot when you want to play closer to the friction all night.

To be honest I personally have not been a fan of urethane.  I don't have a 500 rev rate, and have a lot of axis tilt.  The Pitch black and Pitch Purple was just okay for me.
Well Roto Grip introduced the UC3 with an asymmetrical core and a new Tour ethane pearl coverstock. I drilled mine 4 inch pin above fingers.  First off lets just say this ball is very different and it actually hooks a little down lane.  The UC3 has a very unique ball motion.  I have been able to use the UC3 on multiple sport patterns, especially the medium to short.  So for me being a tweener the UC3 allows to me compete with the higher rev guys throwing urethane.  So give it the UC3 a try today!

The Rubicon UC3 can be looked at in two different ways: it is either the evolution of the urethane ball, or it closes the gap between urethane and reactive. Either way, the combination of the Rondure core and the Tour-ethane coverstock definitely creates a unique ball motion that is a must in any tournament bowler's bag. With the strong midlane motion that this ball has, while still having that smooth backend motion that urethane is known for, it is money on shorter or cliffed patterns. I do think that this ball is certainly too much motion for truly dry lanes, as it will pick up too early and burn off energy. However, when this ball is in play, it is a motion that is not matched by anything else being produced in Utah. It is a good 2-3 boards stronger than the Pitch Black.

Roto Grip definitely did it right this time with powering up their urethane offering. The Rubicon UC3 features the same Rondure core featured in the original Rubicon and the UC2. This core has now proven to be a winner with whatever cover you decide to wrap it in. They teamed it up this time with their Tour-ethaneâ„¢ Pearl cover and again, it just works.

This is the most continuous urethane ball I've ever thrown. Its strong enough for the fresh, smooth enough to blend out any condition and continuous enough to throw right and get back through the pins.

I tested the Rubicon UC3 on the high Volume house pattern at my home center. I've never thrown Urethane on this version of our house pattern. Mostly because there's so much volume than I can easily throw my most aggressive pieces and partly because I assumed throwing urethane would force me right which would push oil downlane to the right and making the lanes flatter as the night went on. I threw the UC3 where I would assume I needed to be with urethane (very close to the friction) and watched it go left and keep going. I decided to move to the line I had been playing with reactive balls in the same hook range as the original Rubicon, figuring I'd adjust right to get the ball through the pins. Then I watched the UC3 go through the head-pin. I ended up 3 left of there watching the ball split the 8-9. I also figured I'm have to transition away from it after half a game or so. Instead I threw all 3 games and never stopped seeing the ball go through the pins the right way.

The Rubicon UC3 is the most usable urethane I've personally thrown. I don't have the kind of rev rate that usually keeps a urethane useful on higher volume patterns but the UC3 doesn't have the same weaknesses in down-lane hitting power than most urethane's do when covering boards.

LANE CONDITION

Length: THS

Volume: THS

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): THS

The Rubicon UC3 (Ultimate Concept 3) or simply UC3 uses the Low RG Rondure Core and Tour-ethane Pearl Cover stock to give you more reaction than the standard urethane bowling ball.  First off, I am not a urethane guy until I threw the UC3.  This bowling ball is the first bowling ball out of my bag when I go to league.  I have a huge problem with over and under on a fresh league condition and the UC3 blends that out for me.  The UC3 creates a readable reaction and my angles are not drastic.  The UC3 allows me to stay closer to the dirt and when the dirt blows up, I can still move left with this bowling ball.  It is the first “urethane type” bowling ball that I will gladly drill for a customer.  Compared to the Pitch Black or any of the pitches, the UC3 just has more reaction overall.  The layout I used was a basic pin over the bridge with the mass bias in my thumb hole.  I believe the numbers are 5 ½ X 5 ½ x 2 3/4 which is based off my PAP of 5 5/8 over and ¾ up.  What I have noticed with the UC3 and any “urethane type” bowling ball is the break point is closer than a regular resin bowling ball.  With my lower rev rate and slower ball speed I am farther right with my feet and eyes so that I can make sure to hit the dirt or dry boards.  The UC3 allows me to have some wiggle room because it is stronger on the backend than the other “urethane type” bowling balls.  If you were looking for a “urethane type” bowling ball the UC3 is the clear choice.

Rubicon UC3

RG: 2.49
Diff: 0.052
PSA:  0.011
Coverstock:  Tour-Ethane

Layout:  4 x 4 x 1
RPM:  360 (Left Handed)

Being a lower rev player and on the left side, I never felt the need to have Urethane in my bag.  Storm and Roto Grip put out some good Urethane balls over the years, but I always stayed away from purchasing one, until the Rubicon UC3 came out.  Something about this ball seemed different so I decided to give it a try and am I glad I did.  In my bi-weekly couples league on the 2nd shift of an extremely wet/dry pattern, this ball allowed me to play straight up the lane and give me that smooth / predictable motion on the back part of the lane.
This ball always has a spot in my bag, whether I am heading out to league or a tournament.

Urethane and I have never gotten along. Mostly because I don’t have enough hand in the ball matched with too much speed, I can’t ever get it to read the lane. The UC3 presents a way different look for me than any other urethane ball ever has. It’s probably the mix of pearl that is in the cover matched with the asymmetrical core that is helping me out a lot. Regardless I am loving the shape I get out of the UC3. Not to mention the ball is just beautiful.. It gave me a great look over the weekend when we started on a shorter pattern allowing me to keep the ball in front of me and still get a decent amount of shape into the pocket. I am over-all thrilled with this piece in my bag and it will be going to every tournament.

COMMENTS

The Rubicon UC3 features mildly asymmetric Rondure core and the Tour-ethane Pearl coverstock. With disappearance of weight holes, such mildly asymmetrical cores became a go-to. I have had a good of amount of success with the Rubicon UC2, so having the same core with a completely different coverstock is very intriguing.

I drilled my Rubicon UC3 with a pin down layout: 50 x 5 x 75. Previously, I had little success with “urethane-like” bowling balls with stronger asymmetrical cores because a lot of times the cores were too strong for me to play straighter but then the coverstocks were too weak for more open angles. Rubicon UC3 seems to the one I can use much more. With this pin-down layout, my Rubicon UC3 doesn’t flare too much, which I believe allows it, together with a cleaner coverstock, to maintain a bit more energy and continue stronger at the end of the pattern.

I believe that the Rubicon UC3 is a good option to have in your arsenal for shorter medium patterns where a Pitch Black or Fast Pitch may be too weak. I can also see this ball being very useful on longer medium patterns if the structure of the pattern requires bowlers to play closer to the gutter. Rev-dominant bowlers who are looking for a smoother overall reaction should like the Rubicon UC3.

The UC3 is urethane reimagined. With a mild asymmetric core and the pearlized Tour-ethane cover, this ball creates a shape unlike anything else on the market. Stronger and more shape than traditional urethane, but still able to blend out wet/dry conditions and control those flatter patterns.
