Description: This mid-performance ball by Roto Grip called the Wrecker has the same Neutron core as the Shatter, Rising Star, and Shooting Star. This is a late rolling core that provides length and strong down-lane motion. The 52ML coverstock is a hybrid reactive cover formulated for medium to light oil conditions. This coverstock helps you clear the front end and gives you more control a the breakpoint. With this unique coverstock and core combination you will see an earlier and more consistent reaction than the Shatter in the medium to light oil conditions.

Wrecker Review

Hello all and thanks for reading.  As always you can find the video that goes along with our review on our YouTube Channel : http://www.youtube.com/user/CompetitiveEdgeBowl

I was very excited about the Wrecker after having much success with the same core in the Rising Star.  I drilled the Wrecker with a layout that promotes good length and good pop on the backend.  80 x 5.25 x 55   This layout allowed me to keep my feet further right on conditions that were lighter and also move in and get the ball around the corner when the lanes started to breakdown.  The Wrecker pushes down the lane easily thru the front with a pronounced shift at the breakpoint.  First time I threw the ball I was shocked and it almost seemed like the ball hit a wall and bounced left.  That same day I was able to move my feet 15 boards left and target around 8 boards left and it still recovered with ease.  As you can see in the video, the ball travels downlane with ease (I had just finished throwing three other balls on a similar line with much stronger coverstocks and more surface to the point where I had to start moving in but with the Wrecker I was able to move back to the right and regain the angularity at the breakpoint.  If you are looking for a ball that gets down the lane with ease or allows you to play straighter at the beginning of your night, then you have found the right one.  Predictability with power is the what you get with this ball.  Great Job Roto, you have outdone yourselves once again.

Hand: Right
Ball Speed: 16-17mph
Ball Weight: 15lbs
Layout: 75x6.25x20
Conditions: THS 39' feet

Being in the Pro Shop I have noticed that my distributors cannot keep this ball in stock.  Once they come in within a two to three days they are out again.
I hope that no one sleeps on the ball.  This is one of the best lower-mid price ball on the market.
I practice with this ball on a fresh house shot and could not miss the pocket.  On shots that I thought was to wide the ball recovered and on the ones I know I pull the ball held and proceeded to blow the rack.  This will be a great league ball and a great tournament piece on lighter and shorter conditions.
I will be drilling another one a little stronger because I can see that with the right surface prep and layout this ball can be a true WRECKER on the heaviest lane condition.  Cant wait to drill another one.

Great ball for the price....Thanks RotoGrip for another great one!
you can only bowl one frame at a time...relax and concentrate on KICKING BUTT!

Right Handed
Ball weight:  14
Rev Rate:  378
Ball Speed:  18.2
Axis Tilt:  6.67
Axis Rotation:  45*
PAP:  3 7/8 horizontal, 1 ¼ up
Layout:  Motion Hole (pin above ring finger, cg in grip center)

Decided to drill up the Wrecker with a Motion Hole layout suggested by a friend and fellow pro shop operator (thanks, Brian!).  This layout is supposed to increase overall length, backend, and drive.

I’ve rolled this ball on a normal house open pattern and our local THS.

When drilling this ball, it was necessary to roll it a few times before adding the balance hole.  The pattern was our normal open house pattern (fairly flat and light with clean backends).  Before the balance hole, the ball got good length and had a significant backend.  Very strong roll and good carry.  After the balance hole, the ball still got significant length, but the transition when encountering the end of the pattern, was even more apparent.  The motion hole made the ball quite stronger.

My first attempt on a THS in league was a different experience.  The ball needed some friction to get to the pocket.  As long as I was around the 8 board at the arrows, the ball would recover well and it did carry well.  Standing about 13, rolling at 8-9 at the arrows was successful for the first game.  Once the lanes started breaking down, I continued to move deeper.  As I moved deeper, the roll created by the motion hole was more obvious.  You could see the transition of the ball roll much better.  It also increased the carry percentage.  This ball combined with this layout really opened up the house pattern after the first game.  As long as I found friction to the right of the lane (anywhere outside the 10 board), the Wrecker would find its way to the pocket.  Also, when the Wrecker hits the pocket, it didn’t just roll through the pocket, it normally finished over the 5 pin and a couple of times rolled over the 8 pin.  The finish is quite strong.

My most successful use of this ball was on a modified house pattern at the State Farm Doubles Tournament in Wilson, NC.  I was getting over under with my IQ Pearl and Rogue Cell.  I decided to try to open the lanes up with the Wrecker because of the angular movement and it worked quite well.  I was able to move inside and cover boards right and the ball recovered better than I had anticipated.  As the lanes broke down I was able to move deeper and continue to cover boards.  Because of the layout, this ball is condition specific, but it is a blast to roll and when it’s working, I’m not sure I have anything I’d rather roll.

I’ve enjoyed rolling the Wrecker thus far and will continue to experiment on various patterns.  I could see myself drilling another one of these with another layout for more difficult sport patterns.

A welcome addition to my bag from Roto Grip!

COMMENTS

I was excited about this ball, because I had good success in the past with the neutron core and lately have really liked hybrid covers.  It seemed like a no-brainer for me to combine the two.  Plus, the color scheme on the website (and some of the early reaction videos) is really sharp.  Something about a dark color and a bright pearl white stands out to me.

Was really excited to see my color scheme when the UPS man showed up.  And I have to say, I was quite disappointed.  Mine wasn't really white at all... rather a dirty off-white; sort of reminded me of the drop down ceiling tiles in bowling centers pre smoking ban.  That sort of dirty brownish tan color.  :o  Well, its still the neutron core and hybrid cover...  not all was lost!

I drilled the ball with pin in ring finger and cg on the grip line, no weight hole.  This roughly a 4.75" pin for me.  I decided to throw the ball a bit before deciding on a surface change and/or weight hole to alter reaction.

League night, I found the ball to be somewhat over/under.  Play up the lanes (8 at the arrows, out to 5 at breakpoint), the ball wanted to hook early and over react.  If I moved further inside, and kept my target the same (13 at the arrows and 5 at the breakpoint), the ball labored to finish and didn't have much pop on the backend.  When I moved the breakpoint area in to 8, 9, 10 area, the ball really wouldn't make the turn.  I fished around with the ball for a couple weeks in league and shot a couple less than stellar sets (550 and 560).

At this point, I had a couple options... change surface, add a weight hole to alter reaction, both, or sell the ball.  Although I was tempted just to sell, I had kept in my mind that at some point in time I wanted to give the MOtion hole a try.  I figured this was as good a time as any to experiment.

I pulled the grip and extended the finger hole down to 4" deep each.  I marked a spot 10" past the pin on a line from the center of the thumb hole through the pin and went out to the lanes to throw a few shots.  I quickly saw that my release with this ball rolled directly over the marked tape!  After throwing a few more shots, I found that moving the tape left laterally approximately 1" avoided the wet flares.  I took the ball back home a put a 31/32" hole 4" deep on the marked spot (this was the largest bit I had at the house, outside of the 1 1/4").  I decided to keep the surface as-is for my initial evaluation.

The following week I went back to league with the ball.  After a couple sub-par weeks, I was ready for a good night.  During warm ups, I noticed the ball was visibly stronger down the lane.  Throwing the same line as previous weeks (13 at the arrows and 5 at the breakpoint), the ball had no problem getting back to the pocket and finished dead flush.  the pin action was noticeably better as well.  More messengers, rather than rolling across the deck, pins were flying.  As the night went on, I actually moved in a few more boards, playing 15-16 at the arrows, out to the same break point area.  The ball showed no signs of quitting on the backend.  Left only 1 10-pin over the course of the night (that's a highly unusual) and shot 680.  Over the next four weeks with the ball, I shot 715, 680, 660, and another 660.. averaging around 225.

I have changed my most common leave from the 10 pin to the stoned 9.  Shot a 279 a few weeks back with front 7, stone 9, and sheet.  The ball is just unreal for me.  Is it all due to the MOtion Hole?  Probably not, but I think it changed the reaction enough to create a better match up.

This is an ideal ball for the league bowler. I have not found a better mid-priced ball on the market. I drilled this ball pin up with the CG swung out about an inch. When my Storm IQ Tour won't make the turn, my Wrecker will with no problem. I bowl a lot of tournaments, and this ball is always in my bag. This ball gives me so much backend that I can play almost anywhere I like, and the carry with this ball is great

Layout 60x5x40, used on a little bit of everything. I LOVE this ball!! This ball was very skid/ flippy. It is very clean through the fronts and then sideways at the breakpoint. Pin carry was phenomenal, maybe even hits too hard. As a lefty, I leave more 10 pins than sevens. Unlike many balls out there, it gets stronger as they carry down. Every move I make is right and right. For the price, this ball cannot be beat, nothing we have seen hooks as much or carries this good. We sell six to eight of these a week and have not found a bowler yet that couldn’t throw it or put it up once they threw it.

WRECKER
Type of bowler: Tweener
Avg Speed: 17.5
Rev Rate: 375-400
Layout: Pin above bridge with CG offset and a balance hole.

Drilled the Wrecker a few weeks ago and was a little surprised by the reaction. On first glimpse I thought the ball would be more aggressive, especially in the mid lane, but the ball had little flare to it. Admittedly, the layout has something to do with that but the cover was not nearly as strong as I expected it to be.

Tried the ball on two house shots:
On the house shot that has a little more volume I was obviously much further right. The ball clears the fronts very well but the flare in the back was not strong. By comparision, I was 4x2 right of my next lowest ball – Victory Road – with the Wrecker.

On the drier condition the ball was still much weaker than my Victory Road. The good news was the ball cleared the fronts like a champ. The issue was getting the ball to stand up. Even with the increased friction I was still substantially right of my VR.

Ultimately, the ball is much weaker than I expected down lane. That, however, could be a good thing. While it’s not what I intended the ball to be, it will definitely serve a purpose. I could see this ball with the cover/core combination being a good option on a higher friction sport condition or something flatter.

Also, it could be very useful for players with high revs rates who are looking to stand on it more in the dry.

That is a useful piece of equipment considering the price of the ball ($81 blank).

Rotogrip deranged and wrecker, hmmm what should I say about this ball? Having seen it being used by PBA pros for the 2013 US open championship which is the hardest tournament to play on in this world right now,I told myself maybe it would be good if I can get one of these, so I headed down to the pro shop and got myself one each, punched it by 75 x 5 x 40 which is my favorite layout and I used this layout on every ball I have except when I need to drill balls for tournament purposes. Not a great fan of playing with surfaces,I left the balls in its box condition. No weight hole, excess weight was taken off by drilling the fingers deeper.
Went to a 6 game tournament with this ball for I heard that the house that the tournament is being held at has relatively drier conditions and I am expecting worse conditions for I am playing the second squad with no fresh oiling, during the warm up practice throw, I tried my usual 15-10 line but the ball over hooked so I went in deeper 25-10 and there was a winner, the ball skidded long enough tru the heads and revs up nicely in the midlane making a sharp turn at the breakpoint dashing into the pockets sending pins flying around and at times when the corner 7 pin seems to be standing, a messenger would appear out of nowhere to carry the corner pin.
There were even times when I missed the breakpoint to the right or left and it still made the turn into the pocket even though hitting light but able to carry the pins.
Two games after I was leading the field of 120bowlers and by the 3rd game I was hitting the carry down and the ball started coming in weak and I splitted for 3 frames, I moved 5 boards right at my feet and while keeping the same breakpoint and it still worked but after three frames the ball was laboring as it struggled with the dry midlane so I moved 15 boards left and moved the breakpoint one board to the outside and I was playing the 10-9 line the ball surprisingly was able to carry the line and started striking.
By the 4th game I was hitting a whole lot amount of carry down and I switch to the rotogrip wrecker which was also drilled 75 x 5 x 40 and kept in box condition. Making use of its hybrid coverstock I went back to the original line of 25-10 but it hitted light,so I made a 2-1 change(2 boards right at my feet and 1 board left at the breakpoint) and I was able to re-create the same kind of reaction that I had from the deranged when I started, strong midlane, without losing energy, made the turn and dashed into the pocket destroying the rack like a wrecking ball used in demolishing buildings. It was also able to cut tru the carrydown with ease that I have due to the low volume of oil laid down from the start.
Used the wrecker for the rest of the games and ended 12 out of a 120 strong field.
Anybody looking for a medium to slightly drier lane conditions will like the 1-2 punch that the wrecker/deranged combo delivers. And if you want a 1-2-3 punch you can add on the disturbed or rumble for the 1-2-3.

I bowled my 4th sanctioned 300 with yet another Roto Grip Ball! This time it was the Wrecker. I had been wanting a Wrecker for a while now and had a chance to by one used from my pro shop driller. It is drilled Pin over ring with the cg kicked out about 1.5" and P4 weight hole.  Great Ball!!! This is one of the few balls I can get to carry the 10 from Deep inside(righty). I will definitely be buying another Wrecker before they are discontinued. Great Job Roto Grip!!!
