1st New Ball Please Help
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:29:42 AM »
New to the forum and recently (6 months) started to bowl seriously. I am in a league and currently have a 15 lb meanstreak brawler. The ball is good but I'm looking for a different brand that suits my game. I average 155 and ball speed is about 14-15. I do hook the ball and absolutely love the game. There are 3 balls i'm interested in and have done my research on but am looking for fellow bowlers opinions. The 3 balls are: Hysteria, Disturbed & the Wrecker. Also, i'd like opinions on pin and top weight when ordering the ball. Thanks

First, welcome to the forum.

There are a few things I can think of.  Seeing that you've just started to bowl seriously, I'm going to be honest in saying this.  Rather than going to a new ball right now, invest in a coach.  This is something that bowlers of all levels will do from time to time, and I have done this.  I would rather have you focus on consistency, repeating shots, and learning to work with what you currently have than jumping to a new ball right out the gate.

For example, the person who drills my stuff is also a coach.  When I first met her, she had me on the lanes to learn my game (which all good drillers will do) before drilling anything.  It turns out that she found a few minor things in my swing/approach that were causing the timing issues I was having.  So, by shortening my first step (I take 5 steps) and lowering my backswing a little bit, it really improved the timing and leverage at the line.  Once that was fixed, I drilled some new stuff to match my game.

Now, the Meanstreak Brawler is actually a good ball from Brunswick.  It's versatile and is designed to be used for medium to medium-heavy patterns.  On most house shots, it should be plenty.  The Disturbed will definitely be stronger, the Hysteria will be similar, and the Wrecker is more of a medium to medium-light oil ball (though it is stronger than advertised).

Coaching will cost you some money.  But, think of it as money well spent compared to buying a new ball and then having it possibly be a dud.

+1 for a coach. Get a few lessons and if you think you still need a new ball, your coach could suggest something from watching bowl

As mentioned one of the advantage of a good coach is when you are ready they should be able to recommend one or two balls that would fit your game matched to different conditions. A spare ball might be the best choice for the second ball as well. So many times the difference in a 150 and 190 bowler is spares.

I agree with coaching. The shop I go will give a lesson when you purchase a ball. Find a coach, get an entry level ball. I think most new bowlers gets a ball thinking that it will be the key for success, when coaching and practice are the key components in my opinion.

Most companies have outstanding and under rated entry pieces. Strike king is amazing for the price point.
