Mars layout suggestions
« on: December 17, 2009, 09:38:22 AM »
I just ordered a Mars for my wife today and was wondering how most of you drilled the Mars.  Being that it's a "weak" ball, did you drill it on the stronger side or weak.

My wife has slow speed (12 - 12.5 on Quibica) with about 200 or so rpms.  Her axis is 4 1/16 over and 1 5/8 up.  With her small span (3 1/2 cut to cut) that puts her axis almost by her ring finger.  Makes it hard to lay balls out.

I was thinking of a 55 x 4 x 50 layout, which would put the pin up above her middle finger.  Both leagues she bowls in are on AMF synthetics with a brand new Kegel machine and they use the Easy Street (38') pattern with low volume of oil.  Easy Street is what BTM uses as their Dry pattern.

I don't know of anyone that throws a Mars and don't have much experience with it so just looking for comments/suggestions from those that do.

Right now she has a 505C (50 x 4.25 x 60) which rolls way too early and a 505A (55 x 4.25 x 60) which she can get to the pocket but leaves a large amount of 10 pins.  She also had a B/G Avalanche but I think I drilled that too weak (75 x 4.5 x 65) and that left her 5-7's.

I'm looking for something that will allow her to play more of a down and in shot, be controllable on the back, but still carry the corners (I know, who isn't ) Thanks.

Mars is definately not a weak ball at all its my 1st out of the bag ball on most tournament and sport shots

I have 1 of mine drilled pin slightly over ring finger
CG in line with the pin, on the middle of the grip line
i get very good length and strong backend with this layout

If your looking for the mars to be controllable on the backend i would go with a lower Pin-PAP than 4".  I have mine with a 4" Pin-PAP and the damn thing goes 50' then sideways.

This sounds familiar!  I bought this ball for my wife hoping it would be her "dry lanes" ball.  I drilled it with a 50 x 4 1/2 x 45 layout, her PAP is 5 x 3/4 up, her ball speed is 10 to 12, stroker type release.

It's not a dry lane ball at all.  It's longer than her Furious but it's still a reactive resin ball and there needs to be some oil to get any real length out of it.  Especially at the slow speed that she throws it at.  That being said, the Mars is a good ball and has become her bench mark ball.

I just drilled a Natural for her.  I have one and love it!  You can always find the pocket regardless of the lane condition. She hasn't thrown it yet so I don't know how it'll react for her.  Based on my experience though, I'd highly recommend it.

It sounds like the Mars might be more aggressive than either of the Track balls she already has.

Good Luck!

I just bought one.  I'm going with a 78* 4.5 68* on it.  It's the same layout that I have on a Kinetic energy.  Because of the cover/core difference between the two, I expect this ball to go much longer and have a much tamer backend that I will be able to take care of on medium-light conditions.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.  Due to the big snow storm we are having in the Northeast today we didn't get out to have it drilled so I have some more time to think about the layout.  I'll post back how we decided to drill it and what type reaction she had on the lanes for anyone else looking for information in the future.

Mike....as far as the Natural goes, I drilled her a Desperado a few weeks ago and she just has it in her head that it's not going to "hit like resin".  I'm not going to push it because sometimes you need to know when you're in a losing argument

I have my Mars pin over the bridge and CG under the ring (about a 2-2.5 inch pin), until last week when my house put out some more volume it was the first ball out of my bag, gave me good length with a nice strong arc back end, something controllable on the dryer conditions

JS,

I understand perfectly what you're saying.  Been there, done that!
