Ball Speed
« on: June 11, 2009, 10:50:37 AM »
OK - My local bowling alley installed Qubica Scoring Systems.  It show MPH and I think it takes this number at or around the breakpoint.  Do the pro's calculate their speed at the arrows or down lane?

I believe it's at the arrows.
The more I practice,the luckier I get.

Technically, they calculate the 'off-of-hand' speed because it is the most accurate.

The Qubica system typically measures the ball at 45 feet. Depending on the ball, the lane conditions, and your release, this can be anywhere between 1 - 5mph less than your true 'off-of-hand' speed.

The easiest way to find your speed (closest estimate without video analysis) is to use a stop watch to measure how many seconds from foul line to the arrows (approximately 15') and multiple accordingly (15 feet / x sec)*(60sec/min)*(60min/hour)*(mile/5280feet)=> (15/x sec)*.6818 to get MPH. For example, .6 seconds from foul line to arrow = 17mph off hand.
