Anybody tried a mercury
« on: March 03, 2007, 07:02:48 AM »
at 2000 grit abralon?  OOB I thought it was slightly too aggressive in the dry and way too weak for the oil.  So, we tried an additional coat of bwick high gloss.  Now we've made it too weak overall.

I was thinking about 2000 or 4000 abralon?  Any inputs?

I have tried my Mercury at 2000 abralon. The ball is still very mellow and suitable for dry lanes. I haven't had over under problems with my mercury even when polished. It is even smoother without polish.

never messed around with my cover either. mine is drilled like scotts33 except pin below ring finger, smooth predictable and hard hitting. that is when the conditions call it to the approach.

Mine is at 2000 Abralon currently.  It was already pretty smooth OOB, but this made it even smoother.  I don't see the right condition for it every often, but when I do it is a life saver.

I haven't tried the Mercury but I have tried the Neptune at 2000 and 4000.  At 2000, it was still very clean but it eliminated the jerk at the break.  A little too smooth for what I wanted (I have a Venus for that look).  4000 seems to be the best look.  Just enough backend without being too sharp.

Well, the results were mixed.  At 2000, it was more aggressive than highly polished and didn't give the wife the reaction I think she needs.  So, tonight I was cleaning up my Rampage and I put a coat of polish on it.  When I got done, I used the same towel, without adding additional polish to it, and buffed the Mercury.

We have a tourney tomorrow and the track will likely go about game 4, so I'm sure we'll get to see if this works.  If not, I don't know what to do.  Maybe a redrill?

225-250ish rpm
14 to 14.5 mph
45* of tilt
Pap is 4 3/4 right, 1 up.  Large diameter.

We drilled the merc pin above bridge, so about 5" from pap, cg under ring, it does have some sideweight, I think about 3/4 of an oz.

Maybe reducing the side weight and polishing the cover will give the desired results.  She could play near the dry and it would be a touch smoother with the side weight near 0.

Thoughts?
