Sonic X Pearl "Rico1 layout" My review
« on: May 10, 2005, 05:09:38 PM »
Well I guess I jumped on the bandwagon, sort of.  I had this Sonic X pearl that has been sitting in my closet that I have been waiting for a good layout to put on it, so I decided to go with the now BR.com coined "RICO1" drill.(pics in my profile)

The ball started with a 3" pin and 3 oz. of topweight, after drilling it had 1/8 top and 3/8 side.  I threw this ball on a fairly wet house shot with a nice deal of bounce outside of 5.  This ball was phenomenal.  I saw that a lot of people were using this drill on aggresive pieces, but I wanted something that I could use to combat a 28-30 foot sport pattern.  This ball gets great length despite the pin being in my palm, but the thing that surprises me about this ball/layout combo is the reaction I get off of the dry.  It makes a smooth deliberate move to the pocket and just keeps going LEFT.  The ball carrys very well.  Funny thing is that even when the ball came in high, I didn't leave a 9 pin, it was either strike, or a 4 pin.

But the downside exists also, with using such a weak piece, I had to play extremely accuratly on the shot.  If you tugged it, it was fine bc of the volume of oil.  But if you try to cover too many boards, then this baby ain't gonna be screaming back to the pocket.  And because of the Continuous movement throughout the backend, when the ball hits the nose, its automatic SPLIT city.  But other than that, its a great ball and I do like the layout, I will try to post vids of it next week so everyone can see the reaction that I get.  But this is one heck of a ball, goes to show you that you don't always have to shell out 200 bucks to get a great ball.
