Cell Drilled too Strong-Beware
« on: March 22, 2008, 01:58:50 AM »
I just got my 2nd Cell drilled 5 x 3 and this ball is phenominal. My first ball is drilled 3 x4.5 and I was having to keep it really dull, 600 grit to get any decent reaction. The ball was burning up too early and had very little left for the back. So be careful and do not drill this ball too strong... Anyone looking to play deep with this ball should consider the 5x 3 drill. Thanks to Steve Richter for the assistance on the layout. Kudos to Roto Grip!!!!!!

Mark,

Looks like my flare spacing is about the same, between 1/4 and 3/8 inch. The 5x3 flares more and retains energy better for me. The 3 x 4 1/2 uses more energy earlier. I have never had a ball burn early on me until this one. I have decided to shine the 3 x4 1/2 or maybe only use it for tournaments where I might see more longer oil....Hope this helps.. Thank you

Todd,

Try a 4000 grit matte finish before you add polish. I found a large difference between my stock 2000 grit one and a 4000 grit finish. It went longer with more hook on medium oil.

Todd,

What type of difference on the flare lines are you seeing between the two?  My Cell has about a 4" pin placement under the fingers with the MB out near the VAL. I get about 14-15 flare lines with a perfect spacing of ~1cm between lines. It will poop out on some conditions but the advantage is control which is great.

15..that must be a strong core in that ball, or a long pattern ^^

I have a x-factor vertigo with the pin under my ring at 4 1/2 from pap, my pap is 5 1/2 over 1/2 inch up, rad at 4 1/2 from my pap with a 5/8 hole drilled 3 1/2 inches deep 5 3/16 from center of grip 1 inch below center line and I am getting like 6 1/2 inches of flare with it, the flares are 3/8 of an inch apart to.

My Cell is drilled 4-1/2" Pin-PAP x 5" MB-PAP.  I probably get 6" of flare, with a little wider spacing 1-2cm between the flare rings.  Surprisingly though it saves a bunch of energy for the backend.  Most other balls that flare that much are all midlane for me.  I don't know if you'd consider 4-1/2x5 a weak drilling or not, but it seems to work for me on mediums pretty well.

If you want to drill a Cell for medium conditions, you should consider the 2 1/2x 5 1/2 drill.Especially if you are higher revs.I have three Cells: 6x5,2 1/2 x 5/1/2,and 5x3.My favorite for most conditions is the  2 1/2 x 5 1/2.It hooks a little less but still carries great! Asymmetrical balls in general flare a lot anywhere from 2 3/4" to 6".Anything between these two numbers will be very, very strong! In order to get it to flare(and hook)less, you have to go under 2 3/4".I see way too many bowlers using symmetrical theory on their asymmetricals and then wondering why they are way too strong. Also,I believe that the few people that have not liked their Cells had them drilled way too strong.

i agree that the cell if drilled to strong will be useless as mine was.a weak drill on this ball is still a strong drill on most all other balls. I wish i had gone 5 x3 and may get another and drill it like this with the pin up
