About Roto's cracking problem...
« on: April 29, 2008, 08:00:04 AM »
First of all... Roto Grip is my favorite brand!

With me being a BIG FAN of Particle Pearls with BIG Backend... and being a Roto Grip fan... it was only natural that I would lean toward the MYSTIC to fil that slot in my arsenal!

But with all the stories in the last couple of months of people having their Mystic's cracking... I've become hesitant in buying one.

Why do you all think the Mystic's are having some cracking issues?

A friend told me that it could be a "curing" problem during the curing process when making the balls at the plant (either curing too fast, or too slow)! If true, is this a problem that has been fixed... or still going on? And if it has been fixed, and if you buy one online on the internet, then how do you know which batch you will be getting?

Or is it simply a problem with the way the customers (league bowlers) are storing their equipment in relation to hot/cold places, humid/damp places, near moisture, etc... ??? Or possibly drilling the balls with the fingers too close to the PIN, making that area slightly "weak"?

I would like to hear from people that have NOT had problems with cracking... and people that HAVE had problems with cracking!

www.bowling.com has them for $118.99 shipped! But I'm kind of scared in what may happen when its drilled!

Thanks!

Mine has the typical small cracks around the pin and fingers, but then again so does almost every ball I own.  I did have a Horizon pearl that pretty much exploded at the bridge and pin; it was covered under warranty and got replaced with my Mystic.

I personally have more of a problem with how the ball matches up with me, which is to say that it doesn't.  I have found times that it works very well, but it's not enough to keep it in my bag.  It is only the 2nd particle pearl that I've owned and it will be the last.  I have loved every other Roto ball that I've used.

Ric,

I have had my Mystic for almost a year now and absolutely no cracking that I know of. Used it last night but I never take a really good look at it. I will use it Wednesday so I will check it close and let you know!

Ric,

I had my Mystic for 2 months and it cracked around the pin and was starting to branch out.  If you measure it from the pin, pin is 2 inches above the ring finger, the crack was about 6 inches long and went out 3 inches to the left and to the right of the pin(in the shape of a rainbow).  I loved this ball and I shot my first 300 with it in Nov of '07(ball was purchased Oct  '07).  The crack kept getting longer with each use.  I finally took it back to the shop I purchased it from and got a new on.   The only other Roto ball I owned was the Super Sonic for 2yrs and have yet to have a problem with that ball.

I have a Mystic (3 weeks old) that I bought to replace my 4 month old Horizon pearl that shattered.  The HP began with a half moon crack 1/16-inch below the fingers.  This happened while the ball was in the bag and not while throwing.  I have a modified Rico layout on the ball so the crack was under the fingers and about 3/4" above the pin.  I talked with Roto about it and they recommended I plug the ball or send it back to my distributor as they didn't have any left in stock (internet purchase from a Storm employee) so returning it not an option.

Once I removed the grips the entire wrap (outer core) was shattered.  I literally removed and area 3" x 3" trying to remove all the cracks and still couldn't find where they ended.  I plugged the gigantic hole because this is my favorite tournament ball and we'll see how long it lasts.

I was reassured they had corrected the problem by using different materials in current line equipment.  Probably why the Illusion has a lighter density core.  I have talked with other industry reps and they mentioned issues about poor mixing and curing problems with some Storm equipment but this was the first I had seen the problem with Roto.  I also have Horizon Solid, Illusion, Battle, Odyssey (Cracked),Saga and a Cell.  The Odyssey cracked across the bridge but haven't seen any other issues with it.  I really like Roto equipment but have considered moving back to another company if durability becomes an issue.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if the HP would have lasted more than 60 games before it shattered.  I stopped using Storm after the Paradigm was released because I had the same issue with it, an Ace, and a Vertigo all shattering.

I will say the Illusion is another of my favorite balls to grab when conditions breakdown and get tight.  I have over 150 games on it and haven't seen any change in reaction or signs of cover failure.

Good luck,

Thank you to all those loyal Roto Grip fans out there.  I know I don't post here very often, but I do read the posts on a daily basis.

I just wanted to give you some insight into our constant effort to improve quality, durability, and performance along with advancing technology to the next level.

We did a have a small percentage of breakage over the past year or so.  After extensive testing we have made the necessary changes to decrease that and as you have seen with our recent releases that percentage has decreased.

We continue to look for new materials that deliver performance and durability.  We have some new technology on the way, but we are doing extensive testing before we bring it to market.  Thanks again for the support.

Had a Horizon Pearl crack and the ball was replaced by Lee Upp the west coast rep with no questions asked. I just found a totally cracked Attitude Shift this morning going to drop it off tonight for replacement. I have no doubts that Lee Upp will again take care of me on this ball.
