What drill do you have on your Cell?
« on: March 06, 2008, 06:20:03 AM »
I'm thinking about getting a Cell for our ever increasing oil volume on my regular league.  It's gone from a 38' lighter volume shot to a 41' medium-heavy shot over the past few months.  Needless to say it's caught a few of us without the right ball.  Right now I have an old RSX at 1000 drilled leverage, and a T-Road Pearl that is lightly scuffed and drilled 4x4 pin up.  With both balls I have to pretty much play up the boards for the first 2 games, and can finally swing it a bit in the 3rd game.  I'm looking for something I can play 3rd arrow from the start, and then step down to the T-Road or the RSX when things break down.  I figure the Cell could handle things based on all the praises here.

The question is how to drill it.  Stats are in my profile, but I'm moderately speed dominate, and the 3rd arrow out to 7 is my comfort zone.  What's the difference between the 4x4 and 5x3 drilling from the guide?  Do the other typical asym drills work?  Is there something I should stay away from with my speed?

Asymmetrical cores flare a lot anywhere from 2 3/4" up til 6".I have three Cells all laid out differently.6x4,2 1/2x6,and 5x3.The 5x3 is the earliest rolling and most flaring of the three.I must have lots of oil to use that one!The least flaring and longest of the three is the 2 1/2x6.It must have some dry to react. These two get the most use on the conditions I see,and make a good one-two punch. The 6x4 is actually flippy and is good for when I see carry down.it is harder to control and my least favorite.Imho I don't think you would see a big difference between a Cell laid out 5x3 and one done 4x4.They would both flare a bunch, perhaps the 4x4 with the mb farther from the pap would have a bit more backend.I don't think you could go wrong with either one,IF used on enough oil.Another thing you should know, there are balls that will roll earlier than the Cell. It's more about the continuation than the amount of hook that makes this ball so very good!Surface prep,as always,is still more important than lay out.I don't think you will regret getting the Cell,it is the best ball I have drilled in 30 years or so!

The pro shop just got some in so I'm probably going to go pick one up tomorrow.  Looking for some length out of the drill, not too much though.  I'm thinking pin up 4x4 or 5x4 or somewhere in between.  It seems like lots of flare works well on this pattern for me, so I don't want to kill it too much with the drill.

I have a 4x4.  Odd thing is, my Cell seems to react alot better for me on more medium to dry lane to dry lane conditions as I discovered that this past weekend in a tournament. I then in turn was able to find a better line on my THS last night.  Look out league!

My Cell is drilled pin next to ring, about 4" from PAP with the MB 3-1/2" from PAP and a weight hole to bring it back to legal static weight.  OOB condition was far too strong for my THS (38 ft buffed to 40 ft).  I applied polish over the 2000 Abralon finish, and it is still quite strong.

I originally wanted to go with a pin down layout, but my pro shop operator recommended the layout that I went with.  He had drilled a couple of them pin down, and was seeing early burn with this layout.

I will knock the polish off of mine and take it to 1000 Abralon to use as my heavy oil ball.  I will be getting another Cell that I plan on drilling pin over bridge, 5" from PAP with the MB 3" from PAP to get more length.

Hope this helps.

Just picked mine up, got it drilled 4-1/2x5.  Pin is over and right of the ring finger, and the RG is about an inch right and below the thumb.  The CG did end up a little bit on the negative side of the grip because it was out of line to the left about 2.5in.  He drilled the middle finger deeper, and the top weight is low so it shouldn't hurt things too much.  I didn't want to drill it too strong because I've had bad luck with strong drillings on asym stuff in the past (Odyssey).

Can't wait to roll it on Tuesday, thanks for the insight guys.

Mine is drilled 5.5 x 4.75, putting the pin above the bridge, and the thumb 1-1.5 inches right and slightly below the thumb. I really like the reaction it gives me, but even with polish, it tends to hook too early for me(seeing as how I'm slightly rev-dominant) on the normal conditions around here. The local houses don't put out as much oil as I'd like .

I got to use it last night on what seemed like a bit less volume than they've had out there lately for tuesday night mens.  I got lined up in practice, standing 27 throwing it out to around 7.  Ball seemed real strong, nice hard arc at the back, flared a ton, but didn't start up too early.  Just what I wanted out of it.

When the lights came on I couldn't hit my mark to save my life.  I had been playing up the boards for so long now that it seemed like I forgot how to swing the ball.  190 to start, open in the 10th, I think I hit the pocket maybe 3 times all game.  By about the middle of the 2nd game I  finally remembered how to bowl and strung 5 to end with a 225, those 5 weren't perfect, but like most people say the Cell is carry happy.  The last game I moved a bit deeper, and found a groove standing 30 throwing it out to 10 or so.  Another open in the 10th for a 206.

Not a great night, but it was my first time throwing the ball.  I really liked how it got down the lane (for a dull piece) and made a strong move at the break point.  Unlike some on here, it seemed like the ball didn't have a problem being swung, and had good recovery.  That could be a product of the longer MB-PAP drill (4-1/2pin X 5mb), or it being more of a medium oil condition last night.       I'm looking forward to using this on our usual heavier shot to see what it can really do.

Got mine 4x4. Works real well on med/light to med conditions, I have yet to put it on med/heavy, though I have put it on a 60' flood.

I have mine at about 4x3 with the MB left of the thumb.  No success with it OOB in leagues, but on tournaments it was much better.  Decided to put a coat of polish on it...733 first 3, 967 for 4 out to gate...

Looking to get a cell.  What is the best top-weight and Pin distance to get for a 14lb ball? I'm looking for major hook.
