Confusion with Halo and Idol
« on: October 18, 2018, 07:39:11 AM »
Well, I have them both at 2000 box surface.

I am bowling on the 48' Great Wall of China pattern.

The Idol is drilled 50 x 4-1/4 x 70 (pin down) - no hole.
The Halo is 50 x 4-1/2 x 40 (pin-up) - no hole.

My eye tells me the Halo takes longer to get into a roll, and has less at the end of the lane.  The Idol seems to rev up faster and more gradually and has more entry angle.

THe Halo being an asymmetric core is supposed to hook more right?  I don't quite understand this.  Is the Halo giving up the goods in one big move and the Idol takes longer to do its thing?

Would I do any good to take the Halo down to 1000 abralon to give me more movement?  Thanks for any insight into what I am seeing.

20' tilt
@16mph ball speed
@45' axis rotation

I would think that the Halo is "burning up" or using it's energy too early and not taking longer to get into a roll. The 40 first number on the Halo means that it will start to hook earlier and the 70 first number on the Idol means that it will get down the lane further before starting to hook. Also, with a 40 x 4-1/2 x 50 drilling on the Halo, it might give you a smoother midlane rolling type of reaction with your specs.

The Halo has an asymmetric core which tend to hook earlier than a symmetric core. I would think that if you put a 1000 surface on it, that it would hook even earlier and not get the reaction you are looking to get. I would suggest possibly going to a 4000 surface or put a little polish on it to get it to get down lane farther.

Thanks for the reply ... I screwed up ... my dual layout angle numbers were backwards .. I corrected them in the OP.

Ok, even with a 50 x 4-1/2 x 40 drilling, it would be a stronger layout that will start up earlier and have a quicker response to friction. I still think that going up in surface is a good start.

On a long pattern, especially 48 feet you need something that's quicker response to friction because there is not much backend. Like was suggested above, going up in surface could be beneficial

OP, do you know the volume you're on?  I know the length is 48 feet but often times on these patterns it can be very thin volume.....

If it is a thinner volume I can agree with the suggestion that the fronts can blow up leading to ball choices that need to have a quicker response and a little less surface like 4000.

No I don't but I have a hunch it's a little higher than most long patterns since the surface is old.

If the surface has a considerable amount of volume AND is 48 feet, here is something I would try.

Take the Halo, which I'm assuming flares more than the Idol, take it to 1000, and sand it parallel to the initial ball track. Then try it. That should give you not as much skid in the fronts, but when the ball starts to flare, it will really slow down and read the lane. If it hits like a wet noodle, then do the same thing, but with 4000.

The Halo needs a TON on oil up front, or it will start flaring early and hit like a marshmellow.

Take the surface to 4k.  If you can figure out the surface to volume mix.. The halo hits like a tank.

With 20* of tilt, the Halo layout isn't quite as strong as one would think. Is your ball speed off hand or downlane?  If its off hand, then you are quite rev dominant and the ball should work with the proper surface.  If the speed measurement is downlane I'd think you are matched and combined with the tilt the ball is pushing.  Take the surface down.

Thanks for reply.  That 16mph is according to the score machine.  THe lanes I bowl on are really worn Anvillanes and pair to pair can be quite different.  THis past week, the Halo was clean thru the front and quite strong and earlier off the spot than the Idol.  THe Idol seems to struggle a bit and waited quite a while to turn over.

With all that in mind, I think the reaction I was seeing that prompted the original post was the Halo was cooking off too much energy and appearing to go in flat.

Both of these balls are pretty incredible.  I haven't had ball reaction this good in quite a while.
