Dave Husted say's Cell and Special Agent the same ball???
« on: November 25, 2008, 01:34:11 PM »
I've been following a thread in alt.sport.bowling newsgroup its called "top selling ball"

the org. poster made this statement in one post in the thread-
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"I was asking the pro shop guy about trading in my old ball's for a
cell and both he and pro bowler dave husted who ownes the alley I was
at, both told me that it was the same as the storm "special agent"
that I already had."

-----------------------------------------------------------------
update-
he says it was ernie schlegel not dave husted now.

then in a later post he said this in response to someone who has these balls. who said the cell hooked more than the special agent-
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"I asume your cell is a new ball and your special agent is a old one,
which would explain why it does not hook as much. just a guess. but
the core and coverstock are identical."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Now I know the cores are way different. Am I right that the coverstocks are different also? I'd say they are not the same.

The SA is supposed to be an R2S solid resin (edited).
The Cell is supposed to be solid reactive urethane (resin).

I (personally) assume the Cell's coverstock is VERY similar to the Dimension's coverstock. If the R2X coverstock is identical to the R2S, like Mr. Husted says, and the Cell does not use the asymmetric core that RG says it does, then the Storm and the ROto-Grip management are lying to their customers. I prefer to think that this is not the case. I think Mr. Husted should show proof or retract his statement.

The cores are definitely supposed to different. The Cell's is also asymmetric.

With certain drillings, and with certain releases and used on certain lane surfaces and oil patterns, the ball reactions of the Cell and the SA may be similar and that MIGHT be what is provoking this statement.

The Special Agent is the R2S solid reactive coverstock and the Secret Agent is the R2S LT Hybrid coverstock, which is the light-load particle. The Special Agent is closer to the Vertigo than the Cell. I use the Special Agent and had the Cell and Vertigo and the SA is closer to the Vertigo than the Cell. The Cell is close to the Dimension, which I also use and maybe that's what he's thinking of! Just my $.02, Bruce

Now this was a say what? from the same guy.

"my pro-shop guy said the x-caliber and the cell were the hottest
selling ball's."

The X-Calibur! Man this pro shop must have some old inventory Or is there a new release I missed. Maybe he meant the X-Calibur was the hottest back in its day.

The core comment can only be serious in the idea that the core's numbers a near the same but that is not the only thing that explains a core's reaction. This is like saying the dodge ram and dodge charger are the same car because they have the same engine. This is just insane. They may get similar reactions but the same ball they are not. It is a completely new coverstock and core. Even the Dimension's cover is different in a few ways.

By the logic in the quote in the original post, basically any reactive resin ball is the same ball as any other reactive resin ball.

The Special Agent and Cell are very different.  The Cell has a stronger coverstock that tends to pick up an earlier roll.  The Special Agent has a lower RG core that revs up more quickly off the spot than the Cell.  These combine to make the Special Agent a little longer and a little more angular and not as good at cutting through heavier oil.

I am sure he meant same reaction on a house shot for the bowler, we all know for some bowlers most balls look the same including me on some designs.

You must be from the Vancouver/Portland area?  I know Husted owns a few bowling alleys down there and Schlegel bowls and lives in that area.  It is nice to see some other pacific northwesters on here!

I'm not from there. The org. poster I'm assuming is from there.

Here is another post in the thread
----------------------------------------
The information regarding the balls under discussion being identical
is not correct.

The Agents predated the Cell and use a different core design. Hank
worked on the Cell core for a couple years to get the differentials
the way he wanted to produce a different shape movement downlane.
Having learned from the Cell development Roto and Storm applied the
concepts to the shape lock core. It is not the same core as seen in
the Cell and Cell Pearl. Coverstocks have always been different
chemistries between Storm and Roto.

FWIW, others such as Mo Pinel, were working on the same problem that
Hank was when he developed the Cell. The idea was to create a strong
mass bias core that wouldn't flare out too early for stronger players.
Hank got there first with the Cell and now others are borrowing the
same concept of equalizing differential across the core.

If you want to learn more about the development of the Cell, RotoGrip
taped the seminar for this ball in which Hank describes the ball
development. You can find the videos on You Tube in the RotoGrip area.
