Neptune (Wolf in Sheep's clothing?)
« on: March 14, 2007, 10:59:43 PM »
We all have read how good the Venus is and maybe one of the best values available.  But we haven't heard much about the Neptune...yet.

I'm still learning this ball but it's been a pleasant but confusing experience (now that I know its relationship to the Venus).  After reading BTMs review, and also having had an Ultra Sonic (similar numbers, same cover), I really thought this ball wouldn't see much use locally since most shots are pretty fresh.  The Ultra just needed too much friction and was very sensitive to the oil downlane.  A drop of oil and it was plaque 10.  Lots of over/under.  Definitely could tell that it was a high RG ball.

The Neptune is strange...but in a good way.  It doesn't really squirt when it hits oil but it still gets down the lane.  It reacts as though the RGs are lower.  Hard to explain unless you've seen it react. I never threw a Sonic X but had a few friends that threw them often, and I could never understand some of the conditions they threw it on.  They would throw them on heavier volumes than I probably would have but they matched up well.  Length, with smooth but controllable reaction downlane with plenty of carry.  The Neptune has a similar look.

I don't know if the Sure Grip cover has been tweaked since the Ultra, or the Orbiter core is the difference, but it's a different reacting ball.  My 2nd one is about 2-3 less than the Venus but with a completely different look.  The other surprise is the hit.  Carry seems to be a tad better than the Venus, but that's probably because of the little extra angle I get due to the resin cover.

It's been a long time since I had multiple light-oil options but I look forward to some upcoming TNBA tournaments where these two will see plenty of action.

The guy at the Storm seminar the other day said alot of good things about the Neptune. We didn't get to throw one, but the condition wasn't right for it anyway.

Hey Achappy,

How does the Neptune compare in reaction to a Mercury? Seems like they should be very close.
I have a Mercury that I love the hit of. However, rarely have I found the condition to use it on. Maybe I should revisit it, and pull it out of mothballs.

You mentioned that you have used ultras in the past.
I have two Ultras. Ultra#1 gets most of the work, almost all the time. I use it on dryish, chopped up and broken-down patterns. It works extremely well.....however....I think the key is........there is a bit more solid resin in it, than there is pearlized resin. This blend really allows me to cover a whole lot of conditions, I would've thought this ball could never cover!

This ball has saved me in third game sets, hundreds of times, cause the hit is superb!

Ultra#2 is clearly just a ball with predominantly pearlized resin in the mix. I use that one almost exclusively on toast, or variations of toast.

Jesse,

I've only thrown a friend's Mercury for a few shots.  The layout was basically leverage for me so it hooked quite strongly downlane but it seemed similar to the Neptune.  Try a very light hit of grey scotchbrite.  You may like the look better.   To be honest, I hated the Mercury's color scheme and after my experience with the Ultra and other High RG low flare balls in the past, I was hesitant to drill up any of the Planet series.  Which is why I'm kicking myself for not drilling up the Venus sooner.  I had several times last year where I needed that look

The Ultra I had sounds like your #2.  It required so much friction that it rarely left the bag. It actually doubled as a spare ball when I traveled to save a spot.  The Neptune is like Ultra #1.  I wonder if the difference is like the difference in the Retro Resurrection resin pours from '04 to '05 (from what I read on here...never threw one)?  Who cares..the Neptune strikes
