Epic has a hairline crack
« on: January 30, 2006, 03:02:26 AM »
I just noticed my Epic has a hairline crack around the weight hole. The crack goes about 3/4 way around the hole. Is this a big deal or anything to worry about ?

My local proshop guy said it wasnt a problem because it was the weight-hole, but I question his word because I know hes ripped people off before...

If needed I can post some pics of the crack.

I would like to see a picture.  That way I can let you know if it needs to be repaired.

Without looking at it I would probably say it is basically lane damaged caused by a lack of bevel. But that is without looking at it.

Heres a few pics of the crack. I high-lighted the crack with a white crayon.

This is the first ever problem I've had with a Roto-Grip ball. After I get your guys feedback, I'm gonna delete this topic. I'm not trying to hurt Roto-Grip, I just some feed back on what I should do

Should not be a major problem.  If it cracks worse... you might want to get it repaired.  It is mostly a cosmetic issue.

Those kind of cracks occour occasionally.

Thanks for the replies guys

No the line is not a scratch. When I first seen it I thought it was, but when I looked closer, you could see the hairline fracture. Like I said, in the pic I high-lighted the crack with a white crayon so you could see it with the camera.

I'm assuming that when a hole is drilled in a ball, the area around the hole becomes weak ?

I have several balls w/ similar cracks around the finger and thumb holes. Have never had a problem w/ them getting too big or needing repair. My ball driller said if cracks are same basic shape as hole it is likely an "impact crack" from hitting pins, possibly even other balls on rack or stuck in pit, at exactly the correct angle. Drilling a hole changes the balls density, just enough, in the shape of the hole. A crack that goes in basically a straight line is a defect.

If you aren't satisfied and would like this ball replaced, please email me your information with a phone number to my email address listed below.  I would be more than happy to replace this ball if defective.  I'll be out of the office this week, but will contact you next.

Otherwise you can hold off until it bothers you to the point you don't want to bowl with it and we will still replace it then.  I would normally say plug it also, but it looks like the crack extends out pretty far.  Hard to say until it is in my hands.

Thank you.
