Found out how to make a Saga hook...
« on: June 27, 2008, 11:06:22 AM »
I've been having trouble with this thing ever since I bought it. Standard drilling except the MB is barely on the track side of the thumb rather than the strong side, in order to smooth out the look. I was afraid I had made it too mild at first, because I have not been able to get this ball to do anything, even display consistency.

Here was the process going from where I started to where I am now:

Box finish: Nothing. Skid to the back.
Finish at 4000 Abralon: Nothing. Skid to the back.
Finish at 4000 Abralon + weight hole down the VAL: Little bit more hook, but still too mild.
---
Finish at 2000 Abralon + weight hole down the VAL: Thing turns left almost immediately off my hand and runs left like something was chasing it.

So now we've gone too far the other way. I really like how this ball revs up and it's one of the best fitting balls I own so I would really love to find a use for it, but the difference between 2000 and 4000 Abralon is like night and day. I need some suggestions, please.

Jess

Not sure how much you play with covers, but have you thought of maybe going to 100 Abralon and adding a lower grit polish (like a storm step 1)? I did that on my Cuda/C for awhile and it gave a good midlane read while still being strong on the back-end.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that he meant 1000 abralon with polish.  That is what I would try.

If that is too much ( either way ), it will give you a guidepost as to what to try next, either more or less surface.

I don't have Storm Step 1 but I do have the following in my possession at the moment:

Storm Reacta Shine
Storm Moon Shine
Storm Xtra Shine
Track Clean & Smooth
Track Clean & Polish
APP Reaction Plus
Neo-Tac Renew It
Neo-Tac Hook It

Will any of that work? I notice it came 1500 polished but I don't know what with. All I know was that it was way too mild in 1500+polish except when the lanes dried completely out and then it wanted to get jumpy. I'd prefer not to plug the ball and start over.

I would try the 1000 Abralon and then add Renew It (and just a word of advice when using Renew It....sometimes after applying it onto a ball, I'll hit it with acetone for like 1 second on the spinner, just to take the shine off...especially on solid equipment).

Definatly don't use xtra shine, as that stuff really makes equipment skate through the heads.  Just a quick possibility as to why the disparity between 4000 and 2000.  If you didn't knock the polish off the ball first, the 4000 may not have been enough to get rid of the oob polished finish.  Then when you finished to 2000 grit, the polish may have finally been removed, hence the monster reaction.  If that is not the case, personally I'd reccomend some sort of lower grit + compound type finish.

If you have rough buff from brunswick, you may want to start with either a green pad (approx 600 grit) and add rough buff, or go with a grey pad (approx 800 - 1000 grit) and RB.  I have heard people that have had success with a 3M compound also, but I have personally not tried it.

3M Finesse-it is all i ever use for polished balls.

Never had any problem with a Saga not hooking.

2000 and 4000 are VERY fine. I came across a guy recently who claimed none of his stuff hooked very much anymore, turns out he got his own spinner and was finishing all his stuff at 2000+.

I think the problem comes with the fact that after about 1000 the surface doesnt really appear any different to the eye, and ppl get sucked into having their equipment looking good on the rack, rather than what works well on the lanes. Just because 2 balls look as shiny as each other doesnt mean physics doesnt apply anymore.

Back to the 3M, at a guess id say that the grit in it probably finished the ball at somewhere between 1000 and 1500, and there arent that many balls come out of the factory with a smoother finish than that these days. Also, if you havent tried it, apply a little weight on the ball while polishing and you can take a ball from about 400 sanded to finished in one go with the 3M Finesse-it. Good stuff.

1500 with polish(old fashion sandpaper)....I use on a lot of stuff.  Storm Reacta shine or Xtra for some more length.  That should do it!

I've been using 3M on my saga for 2 years now... its a great cover the  2 to 1 pearl particle cover... depending on layout, it reads the lane the best and has very good recovery. I've polished my saga in the past and it was not predictable at all... just did what it wanted to do whenever it felt like it... keeping it dull will most likely give you best performance

why not go lower grit as suggested maybe even as low as 600 or 800
then hit it with rough buff, so its not super shiny but not really rough either

I'm in the process of trying that now. Took it to 1000 and hit it with a little polish. If that doesn't work I'll get some Ruff Buff and go from there.
