Title: Hearing great things about the Sinister!
Post by: billdozer on July 26, 2014, 08:19:55 PM
Everyone I know with one is freaking out about it...and I shot a 300 on Wednesday with my critical theory (unknown hefty amount of games on it)...

This guy is pretty stoked!

QUESTION TO THE "NUMBER" gurus...

I did not like the first 3 Defiants... (the covers were fine as I like hyper) I assume it's the core shape and numbers....

I laid them out with my favorite layout and I had 3 not so great reactions (roll was weird, never had umph through the pins, almost always left ten pins)...how do I avoid repeating history with the sinister as it appears the cores are very similar?

I guess what I'm asking is...

Is there anything you all noticed about your defiant or your customers defiants that was different?

My totally was almost worthless at oob. I took it down to 3k no polish and its still a medium to med/heavy ball at best.  It has to have clean backends or it just skates.  I do leave more tens than any of my other balls.

See what's up with that.   I get very involved into brackets, sidepots, and if it don't roll like a champ I get rid of it!

I've noticed the same thing with my original Defiant.  Great cover, has no problems with traction, but it seems to leave flat 10 pins or sometimes a flat 8-10.   This is using multiple hand positions, playing up the boards to moving inside.   Yet whenever I throw my Critical Theory or Rogue Cell, it's more continuous, hits harder, and carries better.

I'm guessing it's the core and potentially the numbers with it.  It could also be the cover/core match wasn't as good as what we now see with the Hyper Cell.  In my opinion, the Hyper Cell is definitely better in terms of carry and being more continuous in back.

I also did not like the original Defiant. It just didnt seem to match up with me, but my Defiant Soul rolls and hits awesome! My Disturbed was lights out, but the Deranged I had was a dud. Now could it be a bad layout? maybe, but the Sinister does look really good.

Idk, I just punched my deranged and disturbed for the fall...so far so good, I actually like the deranged better...

I got a lot coming too but I know how to get all of those to perform. .This sinister could be tricky though...

What I'm seeing with the Sinister is a ball that is a little more aggressive than the Defiant Soul.  Specifically, it reacts a little more quickly to dry boards, making it a bit more punchy on the backends.  It's probably somewhere in between the Defiant Soul and Critical Theory.
Most people I know absolutely loved the Defiant Soul and I really liked my Critical Theory.

Is there any comparison between the Sinister and the Optimus?  I been hearing nothing but good things of the Optimus.  A guy I know shot 297 the first night throwing it in league.  If you could choose between these 2, which one would you pick?

Optimus is smoother.  It's a bit more defined at the breakpoint compared to the Marvel Pearl, but not anywhere near as aggressive as the Sinister, at least out of box surface anyway.  It's possible to make them a little closer if you added surface to the Optimus but they are different beasts.
Sinister is a more aggressive asymmetric ball.  If you put them back to back, you will notice how much more teeth and aggression the Sinister has compared to the Optimus when you compare OOB.

Tamer, any tips on laying the Optimus or Sinister? Should I do my favorite layout or should I do something different?

What's your favorite layout?
For the Optimus, I'd opt for keeping your VAL angles smaller and longer pins given how low the RG is.  It's already a rolly ball.  It's probably going to feel a little lazy if you lay it out pin down.  On sport pattern, maybe but I'd personally opt for higher pin.
With the Sinister, you could be more generous with your VAL angles if you choose as it is more aggressive off the spot.  I would still opt for longer pin positions.

I went with a 5x2x4.5 on my Sinister. It has a nice midlane and a strong move to the pocket. I found this layout while watching the Defiant seminar on youtube. Wes used about 4 or so different layoutsand this one ccaught my attention. I have only thrown about a game with mine as summer oil volumes just aren't enough around here for an honest review.

Yep, that would work.
