help me pick my first roto grip ball
« on: March 30, 2013, 08:59:35 PM »
Ok guys im trying to decide on a new ball for our summer mens league its pretty dry most years so i was thinking of the scream but my pro shop has been selling allot of shatters  and wreckers  so now after hearing many good things about the other two im torn if you guys could help i would appreciate it. My stats are 17 mph 480 revs not sure of my tilt but the pro shop guy says im a 3/4 roller oh and my pap is 4 over and 1/8 up and im right handed

I tried a Scream on a light - medium-light oil house pattern earlier in February: pin over center of bridge (5"+ pin-PAP), CG kicked out slightly, no wt. hole. With the stock surface it was almost too much backend to control, but when I could control, it had a bunch of power!!  Spooky strong.

Took the surface to 4000 grit matte to use in 3rd game of sport pattern for a while. OK, nothing great, nothing terrible.

Just took the surface to 4000 grit + polish; going to try it again this week on the house pattern.

With your higher rev rate, be cautious about the pin position. (I'm only at 300 +/-.)

The Scream or Shout would be good pieces to look at.  One guy throws the Shout in our league which has seen a lot of burn on the patterns lately.  As charlest mentioned, be careful with the pin position and you may need to tweak the surface as that ball can and does have a lot of backend for the price.

For drier to medium conditions, the roto ball i would go for would be the wrecker, shatter or rising star.  The neutron core and the coverstocks are excellent on all these balls and they are excellent for price & performance.  The scream and shout are milder versions using modified versions of the neutron core and less aggressive coverstocks.

My only concern about the Wrecker and Rising Star is that both of those are going to be strong off the dry.   Don't get me wrong- they're both great balls with the Wrecker being cleaner than the RS.  But, with having a near 500 rev rate/17mph average speed, the Scream/Shout would most likely be a better choice for this situation since those will get more length and have a more controlled backend.

The Scream and the Shout would be the balls I look at first, especially since you mentioned dryish conditions. Roto is notorious for giving you MORE ball than you really need, in terms of overall strength. Since you do have a fairly high rev rate, you might want to go with a pin down layout to help with control.

I'll warn you. The wrecker is way stronger than its supposed to be. Especially for higher rev rates.  I do not recommend unless you drill it to be weaker. No strong layouts

Thanks guys for all the help. Jesse i was thinking of a pin down scream and hitting it with a 4000 pad to calm down the backend. But after seeing all the success people have been having with the shatter i was just torn and they look very good also.

I personally always preferred the polished solid over the matte pearl. Why not think about the Shout?

He's looking for a ball to use on light to dry. My high school lanes are very similar and there's no way id be able to use a berserk

I was thinking the shout would be stronger that's why i had thought the scream but my pro shop keeps telling me a weak drill on a wrecker.

How did you drill yours and what kind of volume are you seeing at your house.

The Wrecker looks like a great piece, but like the previous posters mentioned, drill it weak.
My first was a Mutant Cell Pearl. I really liked that ball.
