Do I have a blem?
« on: May 21, 2008, 12:36:27 AM »
I just received my NIB Cell from bowlingball.com.  I ordered a first quality Cell (not a blem i.e. a Pro-CG or Pro-Pin).  What I received is a ball with the CG 2 5/8" out from the Pin/MB line.  The box does not state it is a Pro-CG ball and the serial number on the ball matches what is on the box.  How could this not be a Pro-CG (which is just a nice name for a blem)?  Will Roto-Grip replace this ball for me?  I can't see how this can be a 1st quality ball and I did not pay more money for a "Pro-CG" blem.

I have received several balls over the years from different manufacturers with the cg farther left (or right) that yours.. They can be layed out and drilled but it does take some extra time to make sure the static weights and all are legal..

I agree they should not sell these balls as 1st's but they do..

I am pretty sure RG is not going to replace that ball but you might want to contact bolwingball.com and ask them for some help..

Whoa, that's a lot of deviation. Personally, I'd contact the seller for a replacement, because my experience with such balls is rather negative. It is not RG's "fault", I think they'd only chime in for real customer service.

You can drill it, but the CG shift makes static weights difficult, and on some balls with strong MBs I have seen in friends' hands with even less deviation (e. g. 1.5", on a pin-in ball), the reaction was... crap and unpredictable. And more than 2" is a lot! Very risky, IMHO.

hi sir,

storm/roto grip state in their defintions "a pro-cg is where the cg ends up extremely far left or right of the pin and mb.  if you draw a line from the pin through the cg and then draw a perpendicular line at the half way point of that line.  go out 2 1/2" and then connect the points to create a diamond shape.  if the cg is outside that diamond then it is a pro-cg.  this is first quality ball and lends itself to several special drill options."

recently, i have received several balls(cells)from my distributor that have been what i would call "borderline" pro-cg balls.  they can be layed out and in fact can be beneficial for a right or left handed bowler depending on the type of layout you are attempting to do.  as jkiser01 had stated, they just take a little more time.

ditto...contact bowlingball.com for assistance.

hope this helps.

How could this not be RG's fault?  This ball obviously squeezed through their quality control because it is labeled as a 1st.  I'm sure bowlingball.com does not have time to check, measure, and ensure every "1st" quality ball they receive is indeed of 1st quality.  That is RG's job, I thought, unless I am missing something here.

Agree! Just another fancy name.... Pro-CG / Pro-pin blah blah blah. They should just tell it like it is.

I don't know enough to know if it does have an effect (be it positive or negative) on reaction I let my driller worry about all that. Good luck with your Cell.

It depends on if your right or left handed. If you're right handed and the mb ends up in the 4 or 5 o'clock position when you align the pin and cg, it's going to be great for a 45 or 60 degree layout with no x-hole. If you're left handed, you want the mb in the 7 or 8 o'clock position.

A right handed bowler with the 7 or 8 o'clock ball will need a large x-hole to put it back to legal static weight and may be hard to do.

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

Thank you for the quality info. I am right-handed and the MB is at 4 o'clock. I will just get it drilled and give it a whirl. I can't see wasting $15 to ship this ball back. If I don't like the reaction I'll just sell it.

For what it's worth, I have never seen a Cell that had the CG even close to being in-line with the pin/MB.  Every single one of them I've seen puts the CG at least 1-2 inches left of the pin/MB line.  From what I remember, Rotogrip has basically said that's just the nature of the ball for some reason.  It didn't bother me any.  It actually worked for what I wanted out of the ball, since I went with a longer pin to PAP layout anyhow, and it didn't need an x-hole.

I had a Cell that everything was in a line from the MB up thru the CG to the pin.

Message Roger and see what he says.  In another thread, it was mentioned that some of these did get out of the plant in incorrect packaging and were being taken care of as soon as they were found.  You may have ended up with one of these.
