Horizon pearl layout help
« on: February 27, 2007, 07:57:38 PM »
My Horizon should show up at the shop today, and I'm looking for layout ideas.  I'm looking for a layout that will allow it to fit under my Widow.  The Widow is drilled pin below ring finger (5" to PAP) with a 63 degree MB.  That puts the MB 4 7/8 from my PAP.

I already know I'm going to put the pin below the fingers somewhere, since I've had very little luck with pin up layouts.  I'm very tempted to go with the exact same layout as the Widow and hoping the difference in covers will give me the extra length I'm looking for out of it.  I'm also thinking about moving the pin to under my bridge (approx. 5.5").  This would reduce the flare just a tad to allow it to store more energy when the mids start to go and I need to move deeper and turn the corner.  I love the reaction of my BW, I just want less of it for when it starts reading too early.

Go with the same layout as on the Widow.  The Pearl cover will give you a different look on the lane -- i.e. more length.  The Horizon is a great medium oil ball, something that will fit in between your Widow and your Mercury.

Moving the pin another half an inch away from your PAP will change the ball reaction a tiny bit.  The pearl cover itself will do a lot more for the ball reaction.  Plus, you can always change the surface, going higher in grit, or adding more polish.  Roto covers take quite well to changes.

Hope this helps.

I'll just follow rev around and just nod my head in agreement with him  However, I will add that I had a Widow for several months last year.  My Horizon actually became as strong if not stronger than the Widow after a while.   That's because I refuse to touch the Horizon.  Once it broke in, it became a really strong midlane pearl.  It has over a 100 games on it and I know what it's going to do and how much it hooks.  It looks like it's the equivalent of 4000grit.

This won't become an issue if you maintain the Horizon's cover and periodically polish it.  Now that I have the Mystic, I'll probably break down and polish up the Horizon to get a little more separation.

Roto: I wish I bowled in clean centers My SD looks like it's been through heavyweight Tyson fight.

I'm the opposite with balls that I want to keep some surface on.  I've only  had the Mystic for week and a half and I've already hit it twice with 2000.

Mark:
I do have all 3.  I actually want to do some mini-reviews of all the newer stuff and post some videos but I've been swamped at work and my 6month old is working me overtime.  I'd like to be able to set aside a few hours to put them at similar surfaces and get a better read for the differences.  The other issue is that the Solid has a different "specialty layout" than the Pearl and Mystic.  It flares a ton more and lays off in the back (it's purpose).  You're right though, the Mystic has quickly made it to the primary bag.

Well, my shop "dropped the ball" on my order.  They drive to their distributor once a week and they forgot my order, so no ball.  I was really looking forward to throwing it tonight too.  I got my dad a Horizon solid for x-mas and it is a very, very good piece.

Ball came into today.  Had a 3" pin and 3.76 oz top weight.  I was not extremely pleased to see that, knowing how I was going to lay it out.  I went pin under the bridge and the CG kicked out only about an inch.  Final statics were 5/8 side and 5/8 thumb.  No x-hole yet...I wanna see how it rolls first before deciding if I want to remove some of that thumb weight.  Maybe I'll get a chance to throw it tomorrow.

I've had a lot of luck with pin down layouts on solid reactive balls, even though I track high.  This is the first pearl since the Tidal Wave Wipeout Sparkle that I've laid out with a low pin.  For whatever reason, the lower pins just seem to work better for me.  I hope that continues with this ball.
