Layout on a Pluto?
« on: February 09, 2009, 12:33:57 AM »
Hey everyone I just wanted some input from those who have drilled up a Pluto.

Stats are as follows; 14 to 16 with speed, PAP 5 and 3/4 over 1/8 down, Medium on the rev's, typically more of end over end roll.

Im going to use it on a first shift house pattern.  I'm looking to play the track area with a small swing.  I was thinking about a 5x4 type layout, I dont want to lay it out much further away as its a lower flaring ball.

My dad ran into exactly that problem -- we tried a lower-flare layout on his so he could use it on a second-shift shot, and it didn't flare enough even for that.  It made the ball very squirty and difficult to control.  We finally plugged it and threw a 3 3/8" pin placement on it to get more flare.  Even with that strong layout, the ball still gets down the lane very, very well.  (He actually doesn't throw it anymore since it just didn't match up with him.  If it wasn't 14lb, I'd plug it and throw it myself because I liked the way it rolled!)

I like the ball.. I just know for me it's not a dry or light ooil ball at all.. I drilled it pin under ring cg around 45 degrees and hole down val...

I can't remember the exact pap number ie-*-  but I had to polish mine also..

So maybe something stronger 4x4?

well if you want to play the track area I don't really think you will need to go much stronger even with you some what end over end roll.. Because the track will generally dry out the soonest

I have a stacked 4" to pap layout on mine and it is too strong to use on anything less than medium oil.  It is also a little earlier and overall stronger than the Break pearl.

You can see stats on me in the profile for comparison.

Most of the time a 4.5 pin up by 4 works best on most equipment for me, so its starting to sound like im going that direction.  Im getting better taking rev's off the ball with wrist positioning so I think i can make it work well with that.

My 2 cents:  Err on the side of strength with this ball.

I'm a solid tweener, medium speed, decent revs, PAP about 5" over.
I drilled my Pluto for a very specific condition.  In one house I bowl in, the (wood) lanes are absolutely flooded inside of 9 or 10, so everyone is throwing dull solid balls between the first and second arrows.  By about the middle of the second game, we get a combination of burned heads and carry-down.  Moving in just doesn't work, even with a Cell or Dimension, and you can't swing around the heads because if you miss right the ball will jump and if you miss left the ball will skid into the 3 pin.

I came up with the idea of a Pluto drilled real long/weak.  Pin is over my middle finger (about 6" from PAP) and CG is just above grip center no weight hole.  Once the heads burn, I can switch to the Pluto and still play fairly straight up the track.  The solid cover doesn't grab as hard as a pearl would on the dry heads, and then the ball just rolls and arcs downlane.  Carry is amazingly good.

Whenever I've tried to throw this ball on any fresh or reasonably normal pattern, it goes very, very long, sometimes never turning at all.  Very unpredictable.  If I wanted to use a Pluto for a normal condition, I would drill it strong, probably 4x4.  With the combination of cover and core, I can't see it over-reacting, plus the cover could be tweaked, polished, etc.

Thanks scott, thats what i was really looking for.  I have a street rod pearl drilled up in the same fashion as your Pluto.  Its weaker and sometimes just runs right through the break due to the drill and more specific towards late shift over under.

Im pretty much decided on a 4x4 or maybe 4x3 somewhere around angular to hard arc.
