Title: League Lanes Too Dry
Post by: Zaner on October 16, 2017, 02:16:37 PM
The lanes Im bowling on for league are just way too dry this season. Im thinking of getting a Urethane ball. Im thinking about the Hot Cell, but im not sure if i want to spend that much for a Urethane. Any thoughts on what I should do? Pitch Black, Pitch Blue??

If the heads are dry too you don't want to use urethane.  Urethane is best on short oil where have decent oil up front but flying backends.  Also the Hot Cell is not a great dry ball for what I hear as its actually made more for house shot.  Often for dry and burned up lanes very weak pearls like a Rhino, Tropical Storm, or Path Rising (like mine but seldom see dry enough to use it) are also good choices.  As far as urethane Visionary would always be my first choice but the Storm folks on here can speak to their urethanes.

(edit:  Also have a Blue Hammer remake which is excellent for the burn, spares too and though Hammer says its a urethane it sure does behave a lot more like my Path Rising than it does any of my other urethane balls).

I got a Hustle Say, and it still hooks too much for these lanes, thats why I was thinking a Urethane ball could work. I want to stay in the Storm/RotoGrip family, so maybe a Tropical?

I will let someone with more Storm knowledge speak but just know many on hear say often folks go to urethane when they should maybe be thinking weak pearl.  Its going to depend on your bowling style but urethane might roll out with too much friction up front where a weak pearl might not.  In general a good trusted PSO knows far more than me and is usually the way to go.

Like what was said above, dry lanes doesn't necessarily mean urethane is a great option.

Is your Hustle SAY too much and Bullseye not enough?

The Bullseye is essentially the same as the Mix and we have one house where the right side gets torched enough where i can throw my Mix with no issues

Yeah, my bullseye is not enought. I dont know anyone who has a Tropical.
I use my bullseye as a spare ball, thinking about trying to scuff it up a little and see how it goes.

You might wanna look @ the Fanatic BTU Pearl (silver). I just got 1 as a replacement for a cracked Brute that was only 6 mos. old. It goes realllllly long and snaps on the backside. Drilled pin up between the fingers, polished the cover w/ finesse. Hits great on burnt up lanes.

The only option is really a Tropical with Storm/Roto. I'd probably look to drill it around a 3" pin-pap to keep it on the smoother side

At least unlike with the Hot Cell the price is fairly low on the Tropical.  Nice thing about weak pearls is usually sold as entry level balls.  Got my Path Rising shipped for $70 total.

you could always adjust the surface of a urethane ball. Reactive balls gain length and increase the backend reaction when finer grit levels are used, but a urethane will gain length and a weaker reaction overall if the cover is tamed and/or polished.

I have a Hot Cell and I purchased it for a dry/low volume shot and it doesn't work for that.  I don't want to bash the ball because I made a bad/uniformed purchase.

For myself, the reaction I get out of this ball is that it gets into the hook phase really early.  My slow mo videos I've taken show the ball starting to turn on its axis (hook phase) almost right when it gets to the arrows.  I'm not sure if saying turn on its axis is the best description, but I'll add that my ball has around six inches of oil flare rings when it comes off the ball return.  NOT what I was looking for.  I wanted a ball that would get thru fried heads and mid lane but in my opinion the strong core of the Hot Cell doesn't help on those conditions.

I've taken the cover to 3000k with polish and it isn't helping.  The strong core in the Hot Cell wants to turn over fast no matter what I do with the cover.  My next step will be having my PSO put a flare reducing hole in it.

Like I said I don't want to bash the ball, but for myself either the ball doesn't match up with my style or I just haven't a found a condition it works on yet.

Last thing to add is my pin is just right of my ring finger with MB kicked out right a couple inches.  This drilling is just like my other asymmetric ball, the No Rules Solid.
I have the No Rules Solid polished up at 3000k and it works good on a broken down house shot but when it gets to dry it will lose too much energy getting back to the pocket and start to lose carry.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I think im going to try scuffing my bullseye up and seeing how it looks before I purchase a new ball.
I think my buddy has a Tripical hes going to let me try out, Im thinking a weaker pearl might be the tickets. Thanks again everyone

I bowl on patterns that dry up really front to back, backends are fast, and second shift which is totally dry majority of the time. My bag consists of Medium to "weak" pearls. The Rave 4" pin (snake oil), Turbo/R 4.25" pin (OOB), and Tropical breeze 5 1/8" pin (3k).

At first I thought having a weak ball like the breeze with its long pin to pap layout was a mistake, it turned out to be my best ball for second shift. I had owned two other breezes (s/p) with flaring layouts which were my one two combo for THS where I used to bowl.

I did try the blue hammer and it worked on bone dry lanes with light 4k. With so so results at this house. But it was my "HSK" at another league at another house.

Blue Hammer is what I use on fried lanes and it is cheap too.

If you're wanting to try urethane, the Pitch Blue would be the best option. I have the black and purple hammers (with would compare with the Pitch Black and Pitch Blue), and the purple one is far better on dry conditions than the black. Black is better suited on fresh. Still waiting for my hot cell to arrive, but I'm not getting it for the burn.

Im VERY happy with my Brunswick BTU pearl pin down on my Sahara scorched lanes. This place even my plastic Tzone spare hooks.
I cannot recommend it enough when NOTHING else can get to the right of the headpin but plastic. Whats really cool is I bowled 9 games with it last night on the dry & I stayed where I was for the most part. I was shocked. My Radical Primo Solid makes me move after 1 game IF I can play it which last night I couldnt even get that down the lane. Same thing for my Radical Ridiculous pearl which is a Medium oil ball, nope, couldnt get right of the head pin. Only my BTU pearl could & I still was over 200s with it. My Motiv rebel tank pearl\urethane is a bit too weak. It doesnt come back, its up the boards only & that really hurts my carry vs the BTU pearl

The BTU pearl might be a good option but imo you may be better off with a Rhino on true dry lane burn and will be able to save some money as well.  The BTUs are a bit more versatile though but the Rhino is longer than the BTU pearl by 4 to 5 feet and actually even more mild on the back end and overall as well.

Should make this a sticky or something but urethane tends to only give a good look when there is oil in the heads and everything is hooking off the lane on the back end (ie short oil but not necessarily dry).  A very weak pearl is usually a better option if you are looking any kind of burn up front.  The BTU pearl was mentioned and yes it might be a good option but imo you may be better off with a Rhino and will be able to save some money as well.  The BTUs are a bit more versatile though.

My friend has the Rhino so I throw his. Its pin up though so not apples to apples. The versatility is very clear so the added $$ is worth it as I can stay with it longer & also save a spot in my bag. I feel if I want to play up the boards the BTU does it better, if I really need to hook the lane, the BTU can come back & hit harder... anything in the middle then they are on fairly equal ground.

These lanes last night were disgustingly dry. I was just thrilled with the BTU pearls ability to handle it & glad I didnt go urethane on advice I got from here.
