New Roto Grip
« on: November 08, 2006, 10:01:33 AM »
The “Classic” is back.  Roto Grip is proud to announce the release of the SD-73 “Classic”.  The ball that created the most controversy ever in the industry is back by popular demand.

The Low RG (2.50) High Differential (.075) weight block is illegal by today’s USBC standards, but since it was approved prior to the rule change it is perfectly legal for all USBC and PBA Regional competition.

The Sure Gripâ„¢ solid reactive coverstock is a performance proven winner over the last several years and is still one of the highest friction coverstocks on the market today.

It would seem to me (not being able to find actual specs on the original) that the core and cover on the same so the only thing different would be the name (adding "classic") and perhaps the color.  I don't think Hank, Roger and the rest of the guys would put together something that woudln't be approved.

Brian, this looked freakin' great coming off Tammy Boomershine's hand...

Oh yeah, she revs it more than both of us combined... LMAO.

I have one of the originals I found on eBay a couple of years ago.My driller came up with this pattern because at that time, the house had wood lanes with 29 feet of Guardian with a short pattern and clean backends.
It's drilled with the pin next to the ring finger, with the Cg in line with the pin and a weight hole next to the Cg marking. It clears the heads well and makes a hard left turn at 45-50 feet.As long as the backends are good,it takes out the ten.

i dont get it, why they have to make most of the balls with the purple colour? i want a heavy oil ball to be red!

im not bowling for the look but it gets boring when 5 people uses purple color balls...
--------------------
I go two-handed, and i hate stupid 10pins! cuz my 12lb spare ball hooks too much!

Not a heavy oil ball!

I thought that coverstock name looked familiar; the same cover is on the Silver Streak solid. So the SD-73 is the Silver Streak solid with a higher Rg differential. (minor tweak in the core's RG from 2.50 of the SD-73 to the SS's 2.52.)

So 'splain to me the big deal about this ....
I don't get it.

Actually the core is grandfathered in. That's how Ebonite was able to get the No Limit in

Cores are not "grandfathered in", balls are.  The No Limit and Visionary's Immortals are grandfathered in because the balls (not the cores) were approved prior to the rule change.  Likewise for all the other balls with high diffs that were released in the last year or so (Hammer had one or two as well).

If cores were grandfathered in, Lane 1 could put the Cherry Bomb core in new balls.  And every other previously approved high-diff core could be put into new balls.  RG could put the Epic Battle's cover on the new SD-73 since it's the same core as the old SD-73 and it would be approved.  But it can't be, because it's a new ball, not just an old core.

Still, it's either Sure-Grip or it's not. On Roto-Grip's website, the SS is listed as having the same named Sure Grip cover.

FYI, I have thrown both of these with the same drilling and they are worlds apart.  The SD-73 is softer and stronger coverwise.  It grabs much sooner than the SS cover due to the sanded surface.  I believe the SS Solid is also a touch harder on the durometer.  The SD-73 is about 5 feet earlier and 5-7 boards more aggressive.  This ball should give people a reactive symmetrical look in heavier volumes of oil without having to go to the Epic line while still being much different than the Horizon Solid.  I should have mine before the holiday so I will let you all know how it is.  I am planning on using a 6" pin to PAP distance with a hole on my PAP.  That should still give me about 3" of flare and help me tone down the angle on the backend that I am seeing with all of my other Rotos.
