Hey guys, sorry if there is anything like already, but...

I was an avid bowler growing up until I hit about 20. Bowling just hit a point where it wasn't as fun and there were other interests at that point so I gave it up. Fast forward about 11 years now and my 7 year old has taken a huge interest in bowling so I kinda had that itch to get back into it as it's something we can enjoy together.

I went in to the local pro shop, I'm across country now so I can't just walk into my old one, and the guy there has me looking at the No rules and the no rules pearl. Obviously the Pearl is more of an every day bowling ball which is nice, but I'm deciding if I want to get the big ball now and get more of a cheaper every day ball later (hell yeah tax returns) or get the Pearl now and possibly find a cheaper option for a big ball later.

Any input is great, maybe you guys can help with the argument between the two in my head haha.

Pearl...You'll be able to use it more I feel. The solid really needs oil...And let's face it, you buy a new ball after all this time to actually use and to strike with it.

I agree with the No Rules pearl out of the two. BUT-- I would also look at the Dare Devil, this ball for the $ is pretty awesome, and depending how much oil you will be seeing, this could be a better choice overall?

Out of those two, the Pearl. Don't make the mistake I did when I came back to bowling last year from a 7 year break. I bought the Haywire because of all the great feedback and then come to realize the cover was hella strong for what my local alleys put down. Didn't use it much and sold it. Ever since I got some strong pearls and medium strength equipment, I can actually use them all now and I'm much happier.

Was at a tournament this weekend and a very good bowler on my pair started the shift with the Lock. That burned up quickly and he then went to the Dare Devil. Great look for him and he was able to keep it in play for a while. However, he couldn't get too deep with it (not sure of the drilling). He then went to a NRP and moved in about 2-3 boars and was money the rest of the way. Of the three balls he through, the NRP looked amazing. The Dare Devil looked good also, but maybe better for him on flatter patterns.

Equipment is so strong now - even with a stroker style, on a typical house shot, you can get just about anything that's rated medium or higher to the pocket and score. Only those that throw the ball way too fast for their rev rate will really benefit from having a high performance ball on a house shot.

Which brings me to my next point - I would be somewhat skeptical of this pro shop if the suggestions coming from it are these 2 expensive balls. It appears that the pro shop is looking to make money off a less than fully informed bowler - which is not awesome. I'm not sure if you are the one directing the conversation on this one...

Without seeing you bowl and not really knowing how dependent on the ball you are for hook, I would at least take a look at these balls as well as others that are cheaper yet really good options:

Dare Devil - hooks less than both NR and NRP but is a ton of ball for the money.
Phaze II - hook less than NR but more than the NRP while costing slightly less.

He didn't bring up some mid level balls as well but I got that tax return money so I pushed him toward the higher priced balls because I got the budget for it. When I get my second ball I'll be looking at a mid priced ball

I don't have the No Rules, but I've seen plenty of them thrown. A couple of teammates have them. I do have the No Rules Pearl. I'm also more of a stroker. NRP has been a beast since I bought it. Put a 4x4x1 layout on it and it gets decent length, with a strong, continuous motion. Handles oil fairly well. It isn't too flippy. Really blends out the house shot I bowl on. That would be my pick.

I also picked up a Daredevil to compliment the NRP. I went 5x3x4 on that one. Definitely responds to friction faster than the NRP, even with that layout. Doesn't handle the oil quite as well. I'm probably going to knock the shine off mine. Great ball as well, but seems a little more sensitive to mistakes than the NRP.

I have the No Rules and No Rules Pearl. If I were only buying one, I would buy the No Rules Pearl. You will be able to use it a lot more often. I really like the No Rules. When there is enough oil to use it, it works great. The No Rules Pearl is very strong for a pearl and you will be able to use it in most leagues.

So I went in today to buy it after work. Pro shop has no rules in stock but has to order the NRP. Then caps it by saying he can drill the no rules today but the NRP won't come in till tomorrow. Fought all urge to just go with the no rules. Had to get fitted and leave quickly before I could change my mind. Seriously considered just getting a no rules and having him polish it. Instead I'll have it tomorrow. I hate waiting though it was hard to not change my mind.
