Cell Pearl Issues *update*
« on: June 26, 2009, 12:54:20 AM »
I think I know the answer to this but...

I can't control my CP.  The house I bowl at has old wood lanes and seems to be fairly dry, especially durring the summer.

I'm sure alot has to do with my incosistant release, but I don't have any problem with my Chainsaw.

CP is drilled pin above and slightly right of my ring finger.  I forget exactly what the pin to pap distance is but I think it's around 5.5".  CG is below my ring finger and MB is to the right of my thumb.  My pap is 5" over 1/2" up.  I'm more comfortable playing the right side vs the middle of the lane.

Current surface is 4000ab and I think this might be part of my problem and perhaps I should take it back to OOB (1500 polish).  4000 worked fine in the winter, do the wood lanes soak up the oil faster in the summer?

The "issue" that I have is it seems to burn up really fast leaving nothing for the back.  It doesn't "rev up" like my Chainsaw, it just seems to hit the lanes and go into it's roll.  I try moving left and keep it in the oil, but it just has no energy left for the back end and I end up light.

Any suggestions?

The problem is that's not the right ball to use when they're dry.  It's a low RG, aggressive ball.  Just because it's a pearl doesn't mean it's suitable for dry conditions.  The Chainsaw, on the other hand, was meant for drier conditions.  Throw that ball instead.  You can polish the hell out of the Cell Pearl, maybe even with something with a slip agent like Valentino's UFO, but it's still a very strong pearl meant for medium to medium/heavy conditions.  Why the lanes are drier is probably related to the center oiling the lanes less frequently/with less oil/etc. since it's summertime and they aren't bowled on as much.

Okay, that makes sense that the center would oil less durring the summer.  I guess I'll have to wait until the fall to make a decision on whether or not the CP stays in my bag.

Try some polish with a slip agent like Track Delayed Reaction or Valentino's UFO.  You might be surprised.

Should I take the surface down (current surface at 4000 abralon) before applying something like UFO?

Try it 4000 + polish first.  If it goes too long or gets too snappy, then take it down a step at a time until you find what you like.

you can also sand it so the sanding lines are parallel with your track before polish, that would help with length as well.

You might as well be saying your Rogue Cell is too much. The fact of the matter is, the CP is part of a HIGH PERFORMANCE line. It is too much ball for dry wood. Honestly I have never found a wood lane that allowed me to throw the CP nicely. The Chainsaw is a much weaker ball in several senses and therefore is much better on the dry lanes. Throw that ball on these lanes. That is why you have different balls. Don't over react because you can't throw the ball on every pattern.

Yeah, perhaps I overreacted.  It's just been frustrating.  I bought the CP as a recommendation by the owner/pro shop guy at the center.  I didn't buy the ball from him (got a good deal from tekneek), but he did drill it for me.  Perhaps he was trying to "sell" me on the high end ball.  This is the only place I bowl, so perhaps I need to find a new home for the CP if it's not going to work at my center.  But I'll wait until fall leagues start up when the center starts putting down more oil again since it did work okay in the winter months. (I didn't get the chainsaw until after the season.)

The thing that frustrates me is I see people throwing Cell solids, VGs, and other "oilers" and doing just fine with them.  But it must be a speed to revs kind of situation and can't compare me to any of them.

There are so many factors when it comes to what ball you can throw when. I am a fairly high speed and high rev bowler. Some days I am throw my Rogue when everyone else is throwing medium to entry level balls and other days I will be throwing my Mercury when everyone else is throwing the Rogue and VG. There are at least 20 different factors I would say... I think if you took the CP back to OOB it might give you a little better of a look on the pattern, but when it comes to what ball you are throwing, don't pay attention to the brand or what performance it is, all that matters is if it works for you.

Update

I bowled the first week of fall/winter league last Thursday and I realize that I definatly overreacted.  I used the Cell Pearl all 3 games although I should have made a ball change sometime in the middle of the 3rd game.  I bowled slightly above my above my average and it could have been much better had I not missed a few single pin spares (one 10 pin and a 4 pin), and choped a couple multi pin spares.

The first game I started out trying some things with my release (not a good time to play around) and I was all over the place. 179

Late in that first game I went to a basic "suitcase" release and that combined with keeping my speed up was the answer.
Second game 214

Third game, like I said I should have made a ball change at some point as I started going through the nose and ended up with some split issues. 177

So a 570 to open the season up which is 15 pins above my average for series.  I was in the pocket most of the night after I quit playing with my release, I left a lot of 4 pins which was odd for me.  I made a small change and then started leaving 10 pins quite often.  For the most part though I was very satisfied, and I think I'll keep the Cell Pearl
