Roto Grip newbie
« on: September 14, 2004, 02:35:26 AM »
Hi all, I'm pretty interested in trying out some roto grip stuff. I'm right handed, got an 18 mph ball speed with ~300 rpm and i track relatively high (~ 3/4 to 1 inch from the holes) with ~30-35 degree axis rotation. I'm currently mainly using a danger zone (the very very 1st danger zone, still serving me well) as well as a cranberry (which I'm very disappointed in). As you can see I need a filler for medium-heavy or heavy oil conditions, which unfortunately I am bowling in. My center usually has around 38-40 feet of oiling (no fancy patterns, just standard house shot if i'm not mistaken). With my current arsenal (I wouldnt even call that an arsenal...), I'm pretty much forced to play outside. I usually play 10-10.

Ok so enuf about myself, so what ball would u guys recommend so that I can play much more inside (starting at 20 and beyond) so that I can create a wider area of play? Would appreciate if you recommended a drilling layout too.

Thanks!

Well, if you're looking for something for med-heavy to heavy, i'd naturally suggest either a Rush or an Oracle.  Rush is an early, heavy moving reactive, the Oracle is a very versatile particle, can be angular, can be smooth, depending on the drill you decide to go with.  I'm not TOO sure on the type of drilling you'd want to go with, probably if you want length, go with the pin 45 degrees above ring finger, CG in palm.  If you want smooth, go with pin directly below the ring finger, CG kicked out a little bit (putting the MB in a strong position would probably help too).  I'm sure others on here can give a more detailed explanation of what to do, but here is my general suggestions.

Andrew is pretty "right on" here......

I'd go with an Oracle...leave it at box condition.....go with a strong drill....4x3 or so, or if you're wanting more midlane...kick the cg out a bit more i.e.; 4x2...

It's a medium load particle, but small particles thus getting more of a reactive look out of a particle...very big and continuous on the backend....

Wow those were fast replies Thanks, I was wondering though if the Oracle would hit well for weaker handed players?

Roto Grip hits HARD no matter who throws it!!! I would suggest with you having 18 mph ball speed that you put the MB in the arc position vs. the strong.  Because I punched mine up with the pin 3" from my PAP and the MB in the strong position, and my ball goes wayyyy too long.  I'm gonna have to put some more surface on it.  But with the MB in the Arc position(left of the thum) I think that it will give you that early read that you are looking for. But it is a very versatile ball.  You won't see any burnout like you tend to see with some heavy load particles.  Let us know how it works out for you.

Alright I just got back from my pro shop empty handed and a couple of questions in my head. My pro shop operator was discouraging me from getting the Oracle, saying that he has yet to see it perform very well. (How true is not the issue). He was trying to persuade me to get either big B's Ultimate Inferno or Track's Animal Untamed or Apocalypse, saying that these have been "tried and true". I know its pretty hard to compare all 4 balls can can someone give a me a brief outline comparing them?

The Apocalypse while a really nice ball ...with the right cover prep and drill can do medium heavies and medium w/ carry down....at best.....it's suited for high performance mediums....nice length big backend !

The others listed are all medium heavy - heavy oilers....very tough to compare...what are you looking for and what kind of look on the lanes are you looking for !?@

So I guess the Apoc is out because firstly I want something that can handle and bite in heavy oil. As stated in my originating post, I would preferably want something that can open up the lane so that I can start at 20 and beyong and swing the ball out as compared to my current 10-10 line. Looking at the current roto-grip, it does seem that the Oracle would best my requirement, but still wondering about my pro-shop operator's opinions. *shrug* Thanks for any help!

Xyun,
Well...to put things into perspective.....the Oracle has a similar base formula for coverstock....however it's a solid medium load particle with very small particles to give you more of a reactive type look...and it's a modified Apoc core......

You're pro shop is saying he hasn't seen the Oracle perform well.....and the Apoc is tried and true.....that's interesting...because the Oracle is designed to a certain extent to the Apoc as a notch above for oil.....so.....take that info for your equation and see what you think.....

Good luck!

Xyun,
I have Oracle drilled with 3-3/8" and MB between track and PAL. I am using this ball to open up lane...
